I’m reading The Bullet Journal Method right now and you are saying exactly what Ryder Carroll says: do what works for you. I am artistic and worked as a graphic designer for decades. I wouldn’t spend my time on the elaborate, intricately decorated journals I’ve seen online. They are a waste of my time, skills, and materials. It’s a shame that people think it is necessary.
+1. I thought BuJo was kind-of insane, but it finally clicked when I went to the source. What he describes in this vid is the true method as laid out by the author.
Your statement at 2:33 is absolutely correct! Too many people over complicate the bullet journal with spreads and trackers that look pretty but quickly become burdensome to maintain, and which may or may not add value to the journaler. If you look at how Ryder Carroll, the inventor of the bullet journal, uses his journal, it doesn’t have any of that stuff. It’s much more stripped down and utilitarian. By all means, people can doodle and make it artistic and add a ton of spreads if they want, but I’m never going to do that because my ADHD and perfectionism means it would be a nightmare to try to maintain that 😅
In my experience, I've always found that the more complicated that I make my journals, the less likely I am to keep going back to them. Simplicity has been the key for my consistency during 2024 so I'll keep that trend going in the new year to see if it really sticks.
I really find the bullet journal daunting. I realized I like the IDEA of the bullet journal - all these arty designs, stickers, etc. Setting it up looks fun and then what? I’m never going to use it as designed. It was just a fun craft. Glad to know I’m not the only person who it doesn’t work for.
That "honeymoon period" is always the most exciting part of any project. It's where we are always the most excited about it and sure, if you're looking for an arty outlet then this could be fun way to pass the time.
I never got into the bullet journal method myself. It felt a bit too complex for me. What I HAVE adopted recently is an index in the front of my journal that will help me find topics later. It feels more natural to the way I think. Happy New Year!
It sounds like the BUJO method would work for you, you just came across the wrong resources to learn about what it is. I bit the bullet (nice pun) and bought the book. It wasn't until I reread it that I saw I was missing the point of it. The fluff you mentioned are optional collections and overly complicating it goes against the intentions of the creator. Those, ironically, are the BUJOs you see the most content created about, though.

Happy New Year!
An index can be a very useful addition, esspecially if there is information you'd like to keep going back to over time.
There is absolutely nothing in the bullet journal method that requires you to use all those trackers. That's extra stuff that people have added in.
You're 100% right about that.
Your lettering is gorgeous @ 1:29 ! Love it 😊
Thank you very much. I enjoy messing around with brush lettering every now and then.

It’s so interesting how people interpret and use the BUJO method in different ways.
