Are you setting up a new bullet journal this week? Ask your questions and let’s have a great 2025!

@@MattRagland no questions as of now. I wanted to share that as an ADHD person I find it hard to pursue tasks that aren't gonna cause a fire right away
So I have created weekly habit , routine and tasks tracker which i draw on an A4 sheet , like imagine 5 different rectangles of habits to track in health, work, spiritual practice etc on bottom half of the page (in landscape mode) and 7 squares on top for daily tasks.
And i keep the page displayed on the desk. So even my wife, when she walks in to my home office, takes one look at it and knows that half the area of the rectangle of health isn't blackened this week while the one for work is completely black(say). So I can immediately reorient myself for the next day.. and know that I'm slipping on the health front.
This act of displaying or keeping visible the trackers and tasks is what has been revolutionary for me..and you can share with others, especially ADHD peeps.

I have actually broken down my bullet journal into two journals one is tasks & trackers - collection of weekly A4 pages that I keep visible on my desk and the journal for Thoughts-and-notes.. it has bullet points of thoughts, plans and ideas along with notes quotes etc.. which are in my journal and not for display.

    • @manishmishraji

And it's great for my mental health too. At nights when I question of my life's going anywhere, I can take one look at my tasks and trackers for the week.. with say 90% of the boxes against habits blackened, for each day of the week, and i know I'm going as per plan and doing the best I can

Maybe I missed it, but where is the link to the bullet journal you are using in this video. I saw the journal link to some rhodia and Moleskine stuff, but nothing to the specific journal you are using here.

I have come to a crossroads in my life where I want to be really intentional for the next 5 years. I am hoping to use the bullet journal to become more focused and have one place where I improve my productivity and take notes from meetings. I want to have one place where this all lives so that I only need to worry about one notebook. As someone who attends many business meetings a day, can you provide any tips or strategies. I have been practicing and my daily log is always more than 2 pages due to meeting notes. Is that ok?

Man, did this ever speak to me. So much about the whole bullet journal core appealed to me from the earliest days, but it soon became, at least to the accounts one would find with a quick googlin’, was basically arts and crafts meets show and tell/humblebrags. I really feel you’re bringing it back to the actual goal, which was simplification and productivity, using it as a tool and not as the end itself. Kudos, and thanks! I’m inspired all over again. 👍

I began keeping a bullet journal when I retired 10 years ago. Everything in my life is in there from notes from a doctor appointment to my negotiations with my satellite provider. No more lost pieces of paper with notes. My index keeps it all at my fingertips, so for me it's the best tool ever. My key includes colored washi tape, which I use like your tabs. Medical things are all marked with black striped edges, utilities are all pink florals, etc. All on the edge of the pages so I can just flip and find. My future log reminds me of how many kids came last Halloween, when my car battery will probably die, and when I need to get back on the phone with the retention department of my satellite provider. I found you today after wading through all the cutesy journalists, which I appreciate as a creative person but do not need as part of my practical journal. I'm looking forward to your goal video. I have not journaled goals but, as I now find myself in the position of caregiver, I realize I need to create goals to tackle the job of learning about, planning for, and finding the right help for my husband's condition. Great video.

I love the artsy bullet journals out there. But it really is overwhelming and, for me, not functional. I’m not an artsy person; I don’t have great handwriting; I just need something to help me keep my head on straight and not missing appointments and events. I’m glad the functional bullet journals are starting to come back - even people online who call their bullet journals “minimalistic” and “functional” put stickers or use markers. I want to see pen and paper only.

I completely agree with you. I am artsy, but my journal is to get my thoughts on paper. One thing that I have started, a fountain pen and ink collection page. Just document the ink being used in which pen. It’s nothing fancy, but just breaks up the monotony for me. Just find your own style and don’t get bogged down in the weeds 😊

This video is great for those who are needing to be productive but get all caught up in perfectionism for that imaginary audience who MIGHT, one day, somehow, look in there and be AWED by how organized and beautiful it is…. Admiring, of course, the person who is dedicated and disciplined enough to do such a thing…. This is me…and I’m finally over it…I subscribed because you speak clearly and keep it simple and functional. Your explanation of the intention page hit home in a big way. Mahalo, wise one. I’ll be watching for more of these.

Hi Matt. I have been watching since 2016. I am revisiting The Bullet Journal Method this year with more intention. I am working to get a better handle on goal setting and accomplishment. Goal planning has been elusive to me. Overwhelming. Through watching your videos, Ryder's videos, and a few other content creators, I am recognizing slow and steady (Aseop) and that I need to break it down into smaller increments. This part has taken years to visualize and put into practice. Thank you for being here and consistent. Thank you for your newsletter. Happy New Year.

I do similar. I put a vertical row for bills, just put a for meaning something is due(if it's irregular then I actually put it on that horizontal row. The regular are in another collection). After that vertical row I put the day off the month/week. Leave last 4 vertical rows for habits or tracking

I am fully with you on the Future Log - I have collapsed my future + monthly logs into the future log format, half a page each. I will use this to schedule tasks and make notes of bigger events happening that month. Because these are always in my digital calendar already, I don't feel the need to keep up with the dates in the BuJo - more to serve as a reminder as I am glancing at my Future/Monthly Log to plan my week.
I love your idea for using those beefy tabs for collections - I have some in my Amazon cart now. :) I'll probably still use the Index to denote things that are not as useful to go back to frequently (i.e. - month boundaries, designs/diagrams).
    Thanks for your excellent content.

Great video, and the minimalist theme ticks a few boxes for me. I’ve only just been exposed to it 2 weeks ago, and the part of the ethos that I struggle with understanding, is the ‘reflection’ part of the process. So many things come at me from all sides, the wide end of the funnel of tasks I catch and have to complete, is big. I will *never* go back and look at completed tasks. What happened last week, or even yesterday, is ancient history. Once tasks are done, they’re gone, and 50 new tasks have replaced them. How does this system integrate with a philosophy that _never_ looks back, and only forward?

    • @MattRagland
      @MattRagland  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think all you might need is just to check in with yourself, regardless of which tasks you completed, and ask if what you’re doing is in alignment with your goals and intentions. If so, keep making progress! If not, then make a pivot.

@@MattRagland Thanks for your input. I might have to seek out and hire a professional consultant to walk through my day-to-day and offer some targeted insights.
There are some useful nuggets of value in various BuJo videos, but they all seem to focus on the mindful/reflective/journaling-for-journaling-sake aspect, but not always on the "Get 947 different things done every day" aspect.
I may end up pivoting into a nightly recap of the day, and use that to drive the next day's intended priorities, but by noon of the next day, that well-engineered plan for the day is probably already in the shredder as other issues and emergencies come up.

You didn't talk about this but one thing that I have been thinking a lot about whether I even should start a new journal for 2025. My 2024 journal still has almost half of the pages left. I get super caught up in the idea of one year one journal and I think it actually stiffles me a bit because I don't want to try new layouts that involve using more pages. Have you created content around whether it makes sense to have just one journal for a calendar year or just continue on an existing journal?

Most of the time I will just continue in the same notebook if I have about half still unused. Much over 75% and I will start a new one though. It’s not a big deal, you’re probably overthinking the decision. Either is ok. 👍🏻

I live in a country where black has become our national colour… no wonder so many of us are depressed! I couldn’t buy that All Black journal as its be a downer. I couldnt get a pink journal this year but loving the dark green instead! Lush and verdant …the way I want 2025 to be.

Great video, perfect timing. Do you use something like google calendar along side with bojo?

    • @MattRagland
      @MattRagland  หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes I do! Calendar is one thing I can’t ever kick. Needs it for time blocking and reminders.

@@MattRagland Same here! i use exactly that Calendar (fantastical personally), and apple reminders. Do you have a video on how you make it all work together? Or at least a reminders with bojo?

Hey @mattragland, do you migrate your collections? I have pages like what you referenced as "TH-cam Ideas" such as what I am doing with the yard, current workout routine, diet plan or Christmas Cards and Gifts. Do you migrate them at the beginning of the year or do you just reference previous year's journals when it comes up again in the current year?

Do you combine all the areas of your life into one journal? I have different goals for my different roles

    • @MattRagland

I often do, but I also carry a Field Notes in my pocket for quick notes and tasks like shopping lists or around the house stuff.

Matt, do you realize you wrote your goal as "creator business WITH burnout"?
The "w/" is "with"...I think you wanted to write "w/o" which is "without". :)
(Unless you're already burned out and still trying to start new stuff...?)

Meant to do w/o, as in without :)

You want 200k Subs with burnout? w/ is with and w/o without or am I wrong?

I just don’t understand journaling. No matter how hard I try I just can’t wrap my head around writing down thoughts.. it just doesn’t seem important or useful to me. Someone please explain to me how this helps you. I don’t really have a whole lot going on in my life. I’m disabled and unable to work so my days are pretty wide open. I don’t have much to look forward to

I’m sorry to hear that, journaling is not for everyone, but it has helped me tremendously. I hope you find a way to make each day more meaningful. Instead of this more productivity style practice, check out this other video on 5 ways to journal - it has more about the meaning behind journaling.
