DIY Stamped Concrete Path - TOUGHEST Project So Far😬

  • Hey, here's a good idea - let's mix all 16,000 pounds of concrete for this project ourselves! 😂 At least we saved thousands of dollars by going full DIY on this project!
    It took four full days to dig out the path, build the forms, and then pour and stamp the concrete. And it was HOT. Each day ended up over 100 degrees, which not only kicked our butts, but also made the concrete dry super fast.
    Concrete stamp we used: marshalltown.com/pro-2205-cob...

    DIY difficulty level: High - we DO NOT recommend tackling a big stamped concrete project like this one without any experience. Get a couple of concrete jobs under your belt first, maybe by helping a fellow bro out with their project, and then give it a try.

    As a concrete inspector, just want you to know it's important that if you have rebar in concrete (even if it's not structural) it should be put on "chairs" and elevated off of the ground. _Never_ let it touch the ground. Rebar touching the ground tends to rust and that rust permeates throughout the concrete block. Rust is one iron bonded with three oxygen, so it expands quite a bit causing concrete to crack and crumble quicker.
    There's no safety issues with this setup, but will destroy the aesthetic over a few years, especially if they live in a relatively humid area (not desert, basically).

    Gents consider using some "Concrete Cover Blocks" or the like so the rebar isn't in direct contact with the soil. Also, consider "Concrete Saw Cuts" to induce weak points and prevent unwanted cracks later. Great to watch you guys keep it up!

    • @BroBuilds
      @BroBuilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Good tips. 👍 The rebar actually isn’t in contact with the soil anywhere. As we poured the concrete, we lifted the rebar up so it was about midway up in the concrete.

    I think the problem with the forms was that your stakes where too small and too short usually my dad and uncles grab some medium sized ones and plant alot of those on all sides since those flimsy forms do tend to bend alot but they definitely DO work and we use them slot

    The drier the concrete the harder it will be, but it also will be harder to work with. Also, concrete cures, not dries.

    You could have just edged the path and rolled the sod off down the hill. Would have been easier. And half that topsoil comes out with the roots.

    Too many concrete bags is easy to order a concrete truck

      @BroBuilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh we definitely wish we could have ordered a concrete truck. Construction is crazy around here and trucks were booked a couple months out.

    wandering path but straight bricks... looks really weird. would have been easier and looked better if you poured large squares, the width of the path, then offset them as they go out to the gate. Keep them all perpendicular and lined up with the house slab, then just shift them side to side as you go down the path. That way you can stamp each giant square paver.

    • @BroBuilds
      @BroBuilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a really smart way to go about it. . . with a stamp like this, yeah, you can't really make them curved, so I like that approach. The other option is to pick a stamp that's more irregular - the more random it looks as a pattern, the less noticeable that would be.

    The quicker concrete dries, the easier it cracks

    • @BroBuilds
      @BroBuilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that is a worry actually, because it was so hot. Hopefully the rebar helps, and we got it wet enough as we poured.
