But when faced with a challenge she failed and almost got everyone killed. But she picked herself back up and tried again and kicked ass.
Exactly! And she has a good reason to fail. She's the perfect pilot in the film to tell us what first time drifting is like plus she has a horribly childhood. So through that scene we not only understand more about drifting but also her past. How can it be this good?

Pacific Rim is set in a fictional future, where the world faces a bigger threat, so the countries put their differences aside and work together, multiple bases are constructed worldwide, even in Japan and anywhere you wouldn't expect them in our time.
