John Smallios - Black Belt Grading 2019

It'd been over 12 years of battle on the mats. So many classes attended, rolls had, injuries to overcome, and lessons learned, and it all culminated in this night here, 29th October 2019.
The black belt could have come years before from other hands. I've had other teachers before this, and I thank them all for their contributions and knowledge shared.
And in Phillip Grapsas, and Pedro Sauer I found the tutelage and the mentorship and camaradierie that I've always sought and believed possible. From the moment we met, I knew these were the boys to lead us. Till this day they continue to help us immensely, and we of Higher Jiu Jitsu are very proud and honoured to represent them.
It was extra special to have my family and friends there also, witnessing this momentous occasion. For many years now, I spend time away from my wife, and I don't see my parents as often as I ought to, and that's because I'm at jiu jitsu all the time. They've dealt with it, and they act as my pillars on this journey on the mats and off. Without them I couldn't be doing what I do.
Lastly, and most importantly I love this Higher Jiu Jitsu crew to bits. They entrust me with their learning, and they come to class curious, and ready and willing to get better, and they support the school in every way, and they're so awesome and without them this dream does not come to reality with every day I go to work.
I am grateful for this moment, and for the people around me, and for the next chapter as a Gracie Jiu Jitsu black belt, and head coach of Higher Jiu Jitsu. And also for you watching this video.
