Maybe I'm just lazy, but there's no way I would pull that hose more than once.
I would install a T or Y fitting to attach a garden hose to it, and a valve.

Newby question. Does boat need to be out of salt water to do this?

Does this company stand behind its 1-yr warranty?

Hmm. But doing it this way means the leg is still full of salt. That's asking for trouble. Rather than pull that hose fitting off each time from inside the transom, I'd put a valve in-line between the transom and the engine pump and place a garden hose fitting on the engine side of that valve. Close the valve, turn the hose on, then run the engine the way you have. When you are finished, turn off the engine and open the valve, but leave the hose turned on. This would send fresh water back through the leg and out the saltwater intake on the leg. No muffs required. No removal of fittings. No leaning over exhaust manifolds that might still be hot.
Or just buy muffs with a longer reach like I did, and all those problems go away.
