The results of dozens of myths is something people often get wrong. To the point where it might equate to the Mandela effect. Just recently someone left a comment on a video demonstrating phone book friction. With some light paraphrasing they said "Mythbusters had to use two tanks. And even then, it ripped at the spine, and pages went everywhere'' Which I was 100% sure didn't happen. So I went and found the clip, and replied to the comment with the link. To which they said something like "Wow...I'm so confused. I have a vivid memory of that scene happening.'' Other misremembered results include Break Step Bridge, Pennies thrown from the empire state building, Beating the breathalyzer, Beating the Bloodhound, Motorcycle vs Car eco friendly, Sprinter vs F1 driver, bullet deflection using magnets, ice bullet and tons more, but I'm tired of typing. But yeah, people say inaccurate things all the time, and follow it with ''Yeah, mythbusters did an episode on it.''

When Adam talks about having a rough day after being out of the shop, this resonates with me. As a software developer, I feel anxiety the day I get back to the office after vacation or even some weekends because I want so much to get all of the things done but that is simply not possible. It leads to not wanting to take time for myself and tends to start a negative feedback loop which has taken me nearly all of my career to figure out coping skills to deal with.

At the time of this post it was 552 comments. I did scroll through a large part, but not all of them. The fact that Adam continues to talk about how his own disabilities affect him, and how he tries to overcome them is refreshing. I am in a similar but not exact head space that Adam discusses on his videos. We're not privy to his actual home life, nor should we be, but the fact that he continues to put on camera his struggle and how he's dealing should be commended and pointed out. Find me another famous maker that gives you this much insight into their mental wellbeing. Plus who doesn't enjoy watching him walk around his shop talking to no one, but like there's 10 people there to give feed back. Truly my most favorite maker subscription.
Thinking back to MYTHBUSTERS, I think my favorite, or one of my favorite episodes was one of the most simple. When you tried to fold a piece of paper more than seven times. You guys got a HUGE piece of paper, the size of your warehouse, and still couldn't fold it more than seven times. Crazy fun. Simple, but undeniable, and provable. Pure mythbusting at it's best.
In terms of builds, even though it says it in the show introduction, I think people forgot that, together, you had like 30 years of movie effects builds, or something like that. Everyone just forgot that you all had careers before that show.
holy crap, i remember that bird truck episode. and the mental image of jamie walking out with the net cannon, and cursing at a random swedish family behind the scenes is glorious.
As a show fan, I always thought M5 was their existing prop making company in Hollywood general area, having boxes of previously made props and prop industry tools like car flipping devices and quick-release hooks .
I have found Adam's discussions on creative processes to be helpful. I'm always juggling different projects and that was such a great question about juggling/switching tasks. I am a musician myself but pretty much all of that applies with me too!
I grew up watching you guys on Mythbusters and now as an adult I find myself here watching one of the Mythbusters talking about the show.....typing this thinking about how much all you guys made an impact on everything I do. I don't know how many times I've been able to answer someone's wild question of if something would work or could happen. All because you guys took the time to figure out the wild, funny, cool and gross myths. I just want to say thank you for all the great scientific childhood memories. RIP Grant
man, i so miss MythBusters ... the oil and water of Jamie & Adam was such a great dynamic of the show. I'm so inspired to try and create stuff from MythBusters and everyone on the show
One of my big issues at work has always been dealing with people who want to try to solve all the worlds problems all at once (this especially applies to software developers), rather than recognizing the things that they CAN take charge over instead of getting depressed over all the things that are beyond them to deal with or so frustrated with the overwhelming size of it all that they found it difficult to do *anything*. So trying to keep people practical and focused was a big issue for such people. You can to, from time to time, take them aside and pull them back down to earth, give them a narrow focus, and let them go. Adam's Monday story reminds me a lot of those people.
I keep coming back to this video specifically for the finale of the pigeon story. The buildup and the comedic timing and Adam's impression of Jaime is all so perfect and it always cracks me up
To be honest, I’ve been down because tv and entertainment is lacking in intellectual stimulation. But it’s a relief to be reminded of Adam and Mythbuster’s scientific and engineering approaches to questions in an entertaining way.
That description of "I was bouncing around and I kinda sorta had to suffer through the day never feeling like I was getting ahead of something", super fricken relatable. If I could change one thing about myself, it would be "be faster at realizing that my brain is all over the place". Just realizing the state that my brain is in, as it's happening in real time would be a huge super power. Another reflection: When Adam said "and then I'll wait for another idea to come along that I'll get excited about". That's really the ADHD super power, right there. Powerful motivation, nearly as if it were your life's purpose, to get that thing done. Not only motivation, but hyperfocus, learning things quickly when you're in that mood. If I could find the magic formula to get that feeling for every task that needs doing, I'd be a much better place (physically, mentally and financially).
YES! “i wanted too much out of the day” hit home. Really that whole story was the best description of my day to day that i think i’ve ever heard (of course Adam’s day is definitely way cooler than mine). Awesome to hear this, definitely not what i expected to get out of this video lol
Oh how my family loves Mythbusters! My husband and I watched it when we were first married. When our daughter was born, we bought all the seasons, and she has watched them over and over. Her science knowledge is outstanding for a 9 year old, and she constantly amazes people. And "birds in a truck" is one of her favorite episodes. She even knows what season and episode number it is.
Love the honesty of pressure. My job is pressure heavy...but how I wished I worked in 'my place'...you've nailed it Adam. Don't get me wrong. Love my job...but I am not doing my passions for a living. I write songs, We have SERIOUS lego in my home...I make models (mainly star wars 'old' models)... If I could only get rid of the 'work' 🙄
Nah, biggest one is believing they just ended the show; Kari demanding a pay increase of 2x or she'd refuse to come back was the reason the build team was let go, which ultimately caused Adam and Jamie to call it quits before the PR backlash and "sexism" accusations caused a media firestorm.. That's why in the very last episode when they were sitting around the table, Adam eye-balled Kari specifically when he said "thank you for being willing to come back and sit here"
One I hear a lot is “Adam and Jamie hated each others guts and the show ended cause they couldn’t stand working together” and I used to just take that at face value. But once I started watching all your Q&A videos I realised that wasn’t really the case
“Gear switching is hard”…yes, it is. I think it’s hard for all of us, but for the ADD/ADHD folks it can be amazingly hard. I think it’s so cool to be able to realize that and simply work within or around those confines. It’s even more cool that you talk about it. That’s incredibly helpful.
I never thought of it as a pilgrimage, but i stopped by for a picture of M5 one time I was in San Francisco too! I was surprised by just how small a shop it is!
Wait. Those are pretty good Swedish and Danish accents. Does Adam have a hidden talent I don’t know about? Got bored and spent a summer learning accents or something? Truly a renaissance man. Now I will watch the rest of the video.
Most "fun" projects often have an arduous task, moment, or two that usually makes people want to throw the whole thing out. However, when the project is complete we feel so much more accomplished having overcome any hiccups in our projects.
As someone also with a mild (is it, though? 🤔) form of ADHD, and doing a PhD interspersed with lots of smaller projects in between, I completely feel Adam’s comments regarding return, control, etc. And here’s the thing: while I love the theoretical aspect of things, getting into a state of flow when it comes to reading and writing feels *much* harder than when it comes to making, especially if we’re talking completely unrelated or, at the very best, work-adjacent stuff, active-procrastination-style. 😅 Case in point: this summer I had heaps of fun adapting an existing draftsman’s table chair base in order to graft an IKEA chair on top of it (I needed something with armrests to avoid getting a bad case of RSI while writing my thesis), which took me about three weeks because my tools were crap and my knowledge lacking, whereas when it comes to my main project, I have an easier time with smaller, non-core tasks.
Yeah lol..have you searched for interviews where Adam talks about the dynamics between them and how they are complete opposites and it was regularly difficult for them to work together. Also talked about contact with each other outside of work and post mythbusters
He's talked about this multiple times before. A lot of people are surprised they weren't best friends off the show. It was and is a business relationship, their personalities are pretty opposite and that's it, they're not enemies or anything. There are some people you work with that you may not have any harsh feelings towards, and you may work well together with, but y'all just don't get along great outside of work.
They both worked towards a common goal, i think their different approaches and overall thinking helped a lot with getting the best out of each other. With their professional attitude they kept it together, for the most part.
My favorite Mythbusters fan interaction was the group that showed up at the shoot at Hamilton AFB, and at the end they yelled "Mythbusted!" I have ADHD myself and I understand all about unexpetedly switching gears being frustrating. It happens to me at work and it drives me batty!
I also have ADHD and gear shifting has been a bit of a problem for me as well. I also play a lot of video games so I've developed a coping mechanism based on that. I have a manufacturing job so I may perform the same set of motions anywhere up to a thousand times per day. If I'm needed to switch gears at any point I know that "This is my job, I'm getting paid to do this even if it interrupts my workflow." So I create mental checkpoints. I finish a cycle of whatever it is I'm doing. I would also compare it to finishing a paragraph or chapter of a book when reading. Decide for yourself a good place to stop that is easy to pick back up.
I completely understand the feelings Adam was talking about. I recently had a shop built and ever since then I've been doing shop projects. I haven't had the time to build something for the enjoyment of building it. I have enjoyed the shop projects to an extent because I enjoy puzzle solving but they dont really satisfy that creativity itch.
"What is the first and principal thing he does, what need does he serve by making? He covets. How do we begin to covet? We begin by coveting what we see every day."
I've been working on getting panel hinges installed in my R5-D4 build, which is a big bit of work because I'm trying to make parts meant for a metal frame fit into my wooden frame. And is a task that I'm not skilled enough (nor equipped properly for) to do on my own, so this is happening with the aid of a hobby-woodworker-friend. So there are limits on when it can be worked on. I'd hoped it would go easy and be done in one session but expected there'd be glitches and it would need two. Alas, the glitches/learning on the first hinge were substantial, and we're going to need three sessions. When we packed it in for the second session I was a little disappointed but I also flashed to some old comment Adam made in a video about how things take the time they take and rushing is never faster. I don't remember the exact quote, but that was the general sense of it. So, this is a long way around to saying that I'm sorry to hear you had a frustrating day recently, and I hope it helps to hear that your comments on such things have made it a lot easier for me to take it in stride when *I* don't get as much done as I'd wanted to.
I'm a mental health therapist, and though I'm not qualified to diagnose anyone with ADHD, it's good to hear you verbally acknowledge that! Haha! I didn't know if you knew. (also, fellow adhd-er) :) Thank you for modeling such self kindness, positivity and persistent in your vision/skills. You're an amazing human!

That pigeon story is so funny. Them people were so fortunate to arrive at a great time. I was reading on Reddit where a person said they worked right by M5 during the MB days and the best he saw/got was a picture of Adam in his car. Like he never saw anything 'Mythbustery' even working/passing by daily. So, how fortunate were they?! I'm glad Jamie didn't get mad and run them off because his damn pigeons flew away agin 😂❤
Mythbusters is one of my favorite tv shows, now when I watch a western movie and someone tries to shoot a rope with a gun and it breaks, I remember you guys busted that myth
Mythbusters taught me fundamental physics that i did not understand as a child. for example i would ask my mom "if you fell from a plane why cant you just jump off something before you hit the ground, i know its obvious now but when i was young i really thought you could do that. my mom would say no that's not possible but i didn't understand why and my mother could not explain in the detail i was hoping for. until i saw the episode about the elevator in free fall. it finally gave me the proper answer i was looking for.
Adam has perfectly encapsulated the daily experience of living/working as an engineer with ADHD. Anyone else who struggles with the same (and that includes you, Adam, if you see this), I see you, and I bet that despite what your brain is telling you, you’re actually accomplishing an amazing amount. 💕
I have s few miscommunications for the Spanish version but i don't complain absolutely. It help me to get the scientific method in my school and life and i am Soo grateful for the time.
6:18 I completely relate to everything you said as a person with ADHD. I can multitask like a pro when I’m already on a roll but stopping or starting is a huge effort especially when executive dysfunction takes over. Your description is absolutely what I go through almost daily.
I don't remember the "birds in a truck" episode, so I apologize if this question was answered in the show but... what if the truck's storage was a cage, allowing the air being displaced by the wings of the birds to also leave the truck's storage?
Huh. Neat. I used to park my van, unbeknownst to be, right near the Mythbusters old workshop. Mind you this was after the show was done, but I must have walked past that building dozens of times and never knew. I guess living out of a van in SF has it's odd perks.
the polevault car episode.... it really happened a few years ago on nrth 635 freeway in Dallas....a restored 1970 c10 lost its frontu joint and hit a separation at a bridge and polevaulted forward end over end... i was a dallas firefighter on that accident.....
Not really related to this video but a question I think about a lot is, do brake rotors get hotter if you push them slow and steady or if you push them harder in an alternating on/off technique. Especially when going downhill

I like that episode too! I also like the myth attached to it which is underwater car
@yao483still
7:36 - love the use of the term succor... I remember learning that word some years back, but I don't hear it often!
Jamie should have gone to the IKEA parking garage to get pigeons. They have big fat, slow ones at our local store.
Adam just loves situations where Jamie gets really mad and the mustache starts quivering.
I have found Adam's discussions on creative processes to be helpful. I'm always juggling different projects and that was such a great question about juggling/switching tasks. I am a musician myself but pretty much all of that applies with me too!
2:12 answered a question I had always wondered. Somehow I missed that episode.
I can just imagine Jamie emerging with his cannon. Fantastic story. 👍
As a mild ADHD-er myself, I can relate 100% to wanting to do too many things in one day, it can be a real struggle to pick where to start!
Jamie meeting tourists with a bird catcher at the ready and grumpy as hell
Is the best story I’ve heard all month
Oh man that's an incredible mental image, a family pulling in just in time to see Jaime bust through the door holding a cannon aimed right at them
"Who the fuck are those people?" *BOOM!*
Just imagining Jamie stepping out like the Terminator with that net cannon, that is such a great story 😂
I live over in the Central Valley so whenever I was in SF I'd drive by M5 hoping to see a member of the team. Never did, but it was a fun ritual.
If I could only get rid of the 'work' 🙄
I'm playing an artificer in dnd and his personality is as close to Adam's as I can get...he's truly an inspiration for our generations mad scientists
The biggest misconception was Scottie being kicked out due to electrocuting Adam.
I miss Scottie, she was a goddess!
Anyone who hasn't electrocuted Adam as badly or frequently as Adam has is probably safe. Which is likely everyone.
Well what’s the real reason then?
Seriously, pretty sure being willing to electrocute Adam was part of the job description.
Adam Savage's appearance has improved over the years more than just about anyone else I can think of.
I never thought of it as a pilgrimage, but i stopped by for a picture of M5 one time I was in San Francisco too! I was surprised by just how small a shop it is!
The enthusiasm that you have sharing these stories makes me smile, to see you still have a passion of these stories and subjects is infectious sir!
So when Adam described Jamie emerging from the door with the netgun, did anyone else hear 'Also sprach Zarathustra' and envision smoke?
No, but I am now.
I just imagined him coming out in slo-mo
I always say that it’s not a real hobby/passion unless you rage quit constantly but keep going back because you want to see it through
@@shutterbug8860 true perseverance comes out of a labor of love.
"I Have MILD ADHD" Is the understatement of the century.
And
As someone also with a mild (is it, though? 🤔) form of ADHD, and doing a PhD interspersed with lots of smaller projects in between, I completely feel Adam’s comments regarding return, control, etc. And here’s the thing: while I love the theoretical aspect of things, getting into a state of flow when it comes to reading and writing feels *much* harder than when it comes to making, especially if we’re talking completely unrelated or, at the very best, work-adjacent stuff, active-procrastination-style. 😅
Case in point: this summer I had heaps of fun adapting an existing draftsman’s table chair base in order to graft an IKEA chair on top of it (I needed something with armrests to avoid getting a bad case of RSI while writing my thesis), which took me about three weeks because my tools were crap and my knowledge lacking, whereas when it comes to my main project, I have an easier time with smaller, non-core tasks.
I would listen to Adam talk about anything for hours and hours lol.
That Swedish pigeon story was brilliant
Is the only myth is how Adam and Jamie were professional about the show? They only worked together for the show and not outside?
Yeah lol..have you searched for interviews where Adam talks about the dynamics between them and how they are complete opposites and it was regularly difficult for them to work together.
Also talked about contact with each other outside of work and post mythbusters
Before MB they did work together in Jamie’s business.
@@glennac I think they are only co workers at most,.. outside their expertise don't mix
Six-barreled fishing net cannon. Madness.
Adam Savage busting myths about MythBusters - who saw THAT coming? 😳
"We made a REAL reality show" Adam with the FACTS!
(also, fellow adhd-er) :)
Thank you for modeling such self kindness, positivity and persistent in your vision/skills. You're an amazing human!
Maybe, "legally" not qualified. But we can always smell our own kind and im sure your nose works great for that
Wow! You refer to MythBusters as a reality show!? I never thought of it as such, it's too good. (I despise so-called reality shows.)
The best kind of reality show: one that entertains _and_ educates.
"Reality shows" existed for many, many years before stuff like Survivor and whatnot became a thing.
@@badbirdkcthe very 1st few seasons of The Real World & Road Rules was the orgin in late 90's and it was so cool, till it became such sideshow as it is now
It really was - at a certain point it became almost as much about the process as the result.
8:50 having the feeling of not getting ahead of anything is rough. I'm currently doing my PhD research and that is what I'm feeling everyday. Thank you for the inspiration Adam 🙂
Recently finished mine, it's hard, trust me when I say we all go through that problem (kind've the nature of a PhD)
God do I miss mythbusters. It was just such a positive show.
It seems like a lost era now!
@@RideAcrossTheRiver , not just lost. But there is a whole generation that doe snot seek.
Because the seeking is done for them.
Thanks to these great insights about working on creative projects! Feels refreshing to hear how you handle having a "creative block", like about the long term projects/overwhelmed feeling.
After a good weekend, it is also hard for me to start the working week. But on a friday it is hard to stop/close down fornthe weekend.
“I wanted too much from the day” is one of the best statements that explains soo much in life
"I have mild ADHD" 🤣🤣😉
Adam has perfectly encapsulated the daily experience of living/working as an engineer with ADHD. Anyone else who struggles with the same (and that includes you, Adam, if you see this), I see you, and I bet that despite what your brain is telling you, you’re actually accomplishing an amazing amount. 💕
Honestly I'd like to see a collab with Adam and Jamie for a charity build of some sort. But I bet both of them have great stories to tell off camera.
His workshop is the definition of organized chaos 😂
The fan interaction story. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 It's pure gold!! 😂😂
I could listen to Adam all day about Mythbusters stories, set ups, and failures, and all the stuff going on.
I've been systematically going through all the Mythbusters seasons again reliving the glory days of TV lol. Love the TH-cam channel as always!
Bro-ham, you are such an orator, thanks for the stories!
As a fellow ADHDer SAME
Such great stories, man I miss that show.
I don't remember the "birds in a truck" episode, so I apologize if this question was answered in the show but... what if the truck's storage was a cage, allowing the air being displaced by the wings of the birds to also leave the truck's storage?
I never once thought you guys had a team of people building your stuff. Also bring back the marathon at Christmas time
Huh. Neat. I used to park my van, unbeknownst to be, right near the Mythbusters old workshop. Mind you this was after the show was done, but I must have walked past that building dozens of times and never knew. I guess living out of a van in SF has it's odd perks.
"Wanting too much from a day" and then being disappointed hits really close as someone with ADHD. Beautifully put.
the polevault car episode.... it really happened a few years ago on nrth 635 freeway in Dallas....a restored 1970 c10 lost its frontu joint and hit a separation at a bridge and polevaulted forward end over end... i was a dallas firefighter on that accident.....
Not really related to this video but a question I think about a lot is, do brake rotors get hotter if you push them slow and steady or if you push them harder in an alternating on/off technique. Especially when going downhill
