I've Been Lying | Why I Dropped Out of College

  • I hope you all find some inspiration from this video! I want you all to feel like because I persevered, you can too. Dropping out of college was a difficult decision but necessary for me at the time. Mental illness is real, and don't you ever let anyone make you feel alone because they don't understand.

    I completely understand. I was going to school depressed except I didn't take a break. I would have like to; didn't know about medical leave. I had no scholarships...all student loans (JESUS!). Nobody but the Lord got me through school. I mentally checked out... Even when I graduated, was still depressed; I was a high functioning depressed person. Life events compounded it. I gained a ridiculous amount of weight, too, which led to having body image issues. I had issues with anxiety/panic attacks, too. Wouldn't even let anyone know I was having panic attacks. Girl, just ISSUES!! Smh! I'm in my late 30s now and just recently began letting go and casting all this onto God...I got real about me being healed and freed from depression and fear. Thanks for sharing, Aaron...for real, thank you. This really hit a nerve...

    Thank you for this video. It’s sad that mental health is still seen as a taboo topic in today’s society. One’s mental heath is just as important as the physical health.

    Same! I had the same block. So many things were taken away from me in a short period of time that I didn’t know how to cope. My dad passed away and my boyfriend left me. I withdrew from all of my classes and even stopped going to practice. That whole year I had gotten 0 credits! I didn’t enroll for the following fall so that was another year off. And this was around the time that all my friends were graduating with their bachelors so I felt even worse. Idk how or when I got through my depression but I’m glad I did! I just got my BA in May, I started working at a school in September (out of my field) and I was just accepted to an MFA program this month. Things are moving in the right direction. Pray for me!

    This video was so relatable... thanks Aaron! I had to take time off during grad school because I was depressed for a long time, all my friends had their masters already and I had to watch everyone achieve their dreams before me. I’m happy to be going back this summer & I retook the class I failed so now my GPA is back up and I can get my financial aid back. It’s been a journey but I’m so glad you shared your story. 💕

    Omg I have the same anxiety/depression symptoms that really flare up with life transitions. I was in therapy and getting help for adjustment disorder.
    I graduated late and the whole thing too but I felt more like a failure because I didn’t take a leave of absence and my transcripts clearly shows the fluctuations in my mental health. I am still struggling to get myself into grad school and it’s really hard to keep pushing myself into the next phase.

    • @ayanacheech1711
      @ayanacheech1711 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ellyssa Sherman I can relate to your comment. If you look at my transcript, it’s either honor roll or a bunch of W, D, or F marks on the other semester. Now I’m worried about if I’ll be able to get into grad school later. One of my professors has like six or seven degrees. He said he failed a lot of classes and had to retake them due to life issues, so there is hope. I think he has like three or four Masters degrees. I’ve also considered taking fewer classes, but I’m in a rush to finish my bachelors this year. I’m gonna rethink that tho. It’s really not a race, just a goal that I have. I will feel good once it’s complete, but I hope I don’t wear myself out in the meantime.

      I was pre-med too. If it's something you really want stick with it! It is so hard and the road is so long and it was just something that I got lost in and realized it wasn't completely for me. And I did get tired of trying to explain it to my family too but girl, I'm rooting for you and I don't even know you! LOL

    Thanks for sharing after losing my mother 3 years ago I had the same kind of anxiety you described. It wasn’t as outwardly but I had moments where I felt like I could not move. The same thing happened to me in 2016. I had to get a medical withdrawal from 4 classes because of anxiety and depression. It was the toughest time in my life, but I’m happy to say that I graduated and am now in graduate school to get my masters in teaching! Everything happens for a reason, I am glad I went through the experience. It has allowed me to realize that I am much more resilient than I thought!

    Thank you for sharing Aaron! I can relate to a lot of what you touched on. I think the hardest part for me is being a person of color and knowing that not everyone I turn to in my community might understand or sympathize with the fact that I'm mentally drained and have nothing left to give. I think what you experienced with your friends was a sign that they might not have been the right friends for you. Please continue sharing moments like these.
