As a warlord main, don't be afraid to throw them heavies. You'll be surprised how often you land them. You activate armor so early. Sometimes, you can get 2 heavies off Hitokiri and Shugoki you almost always win trades with them

For characters with small dodges (lb, hito, etcetra) you really have to delay your dodge. Wait until the last possible moment to either dodge attack or bash, depending on the hero. Just takes practice
