I know you know this Nate, but it might help someone else understand why your tray/watering system is so important. When the available water is at the bottom, the plant tends to grow more longer, healthier roots in search of the water. Thus, bigger, better, healthier plants. When you top water, the longest roots may not get all the water they require to grow vigorously and therefore will grow a more shallow root system. They don't have to "search" for moisture. Just thought I'd mention it.
LOVE the video! You're going to show the people that thought they couldn't grow anything that they, too can have a green thumb! P.S. Both my thumbs are GREEN! 😊

That was me Nate I was the bare min. I had heat mats and lights on shelves in my sunroom I even put reflective material all around the shelves, but like you said it was bare min. the plants were just ok but never super healthy. I would advise people if you can’t afford a tent try to find some reflective material to wrap your shelves with it did help and don’t forget a fan. Blessings my friends 👍🌞

I've been watching "seed starting indoors" videos for like 2 hours now and yours is surely the most succinct and useful and without annoying background music THANK YOU THANK YOU. I won't be able to do a fancy set up like yours with timers and the things that measure temps/humidity - I'm just going full blor with what I have. I spent a few days building a greenhouse then an "unusually powerful" windstorm came through and destroyed it so I gotta try something else. I appreciate your content, you're super approachable and it doesn't feel like you're trying to "promote your brand" you know what I mean?

    So simple yet so profound.
Nate, you just cleared the air and let the light in. I've always been confused about artificial lighting
for young vegetable seedlings. You are the only tuber (TH-camr) I've heard mention the two categories
of light requirements (1-vegetative and 2-flowering/fruiting). The day after you enlightened me as to the
unnecessity of high end multi spectrum grow lights for plant starting, my multi spectrum grow light from
Amazon was delivered and promptly returned.
Your KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) approach to gardening, as well as your obvious passion for it keeps me
on your channel and surely keeps our gardens growing.
    Thanks.

Have that same 8x4 tent im switching to onion production. Made a floor frame for it with 2x4s, plywood 8x4 sheet, and casters last winter. It's like a rolling drain table but moves all directions. Can access both sides for $40ish will be handy as im putting in 2 82x17 shelfs altenating small fans in place of trays moving the air up and out the exaust blower. should make for around 25k onion seedling veg. Thanks for the awesome info onions didnt pop as easy as other plants.

Our place is crazy town above Stockton ca.
Have learned to manage natural light and added heat. Too much heat with not enough natural sunlight in our area creates spindly seedlings.
Once seeds germinate we move to a greenhouse. They grow with the sun. We do heat if a hard freeze happens. Otherwise we trust our plants to grow with the sun.

Hi Nate I start all my seeds on a south facing window sill with success. However only cold hardy plants and they will be going into the greenhouse next week once the sun hits it all day. I Do give them a boost with lights tho if it’s not sunny. (It’s been sunny tho) It’s too expensive for electric for a whole grow room and I have no space, do you have a cheaper smaller alternative? A propagator? Thanks Nick. My onions sprouted in a week on my windowsill.👍🏻🤠💗🙏

Should I put 4 lamp per floor (2 per tray) or can I use only 2 each floor (1 per tray).
Second question, I bought 220m3\h duct fun that could be run till 180 that's is enough for my space. Many video say to run all time with ligh on, but you say just 15min each 2h, will be enough?

@@albertopetrangeli6834 I would've laid that tent on its side and got full length grow lights and had only one level that way you could fit about 8 trays side by side... but now that you have such equipment you will need 4 per level for best results because those are not super powerful be the T8 is a great growing light you just need lots of them... if you need the ventilation to cool the tent then run it 15 on 30 off or 15 on 60 off something like that... you do not need it running all the time unless you have super powerful HPS lights

I worry about the messages you are sending with this one, Nate. Good on the things that seeds need, but very off putting to anyone starting out with seed sowing who might feel the `have` to have the perfect setup that you showed.Since many people are now starting to grow because of NEED rather than want, this may sadly put them off.Who in need of food can afford the fancy grow tent, racks , heat mats and lights? I can, but chose not to indulge as there are many alternatives_; wait a while and start when the weather in a south facing window supports your efforts, start hardy seeds in trays next to a stove then gradually move to tougher conditions- it works but takes more effort, (..and by the way, I feel that like humans and other creatures, developing young benefit from some stress in order to deal with what life will throw at them later!!)

@@gardenlikeaviking Dude, I might be prejudiced, in my country such nails on a man are simply unacceptable. Have really, really bad connotations, you probably don't want to hear about. And tbh, unless you use them to pick your nose and ears, I can't see how they are useful.

the vikings were masters of adaptation... when they found new technologies and methods of doing things they adopted those methods and did not hesitate to embrace innovation... that is the same spirit here today

Great info! TentGoals. I need a more do-able DIY tent set up for right now. Inspiring.

Money is tight here. No tent. We're putting our full spectrum grow light in the dining room.. We're going to use an extension cord with a switch that will reach the kitchen. We have a small oscillating fan. As for humidity. Bowls of water. We got full spectrum because we plan to grow our tomatoes and peppers pretty big and see how that goes. Our garden is small for 2. Starting flower seeds, herbs, w. spring veg seeds.

they make much smaller tents you can lay on its side and put just two lights and a heat mat with a small oscillating fan an you're good to go less than $120
