Professional regenerative farmer here. thank you for this video! More people need to know about your urine. There are a few important points that have been missed… The fermentation works, but not worth the labor. 1 tablespoon per gallon is almost nothing. You are getting most of your benefits from all the other things you’re doing, not the urine. If your primary source of nutrients is urine this is what you should do: add one cup of urine per 1 gallon of water. For all watering. You can do this “ almost” indefinitely. I say “almost” because if you are primarily using urine as a fertilizer eventually you’ll get sodium and chloride toxicity (especially if you are in the southwest United States where the soil already has high levels of sodium and chloride). Sodium will block the uptake of potassium, and sodium stays in the soil. Chloride will block the uptake of nitrate, however fortunately chloride washes out of the soil when it rains. So if you are in a rainy area, the extra chloride from the urine will actually be beneficial. However the extra sodium will still be a problem. If your primary source of nutrients is urine, you should grow crops that are high in salt. Chard, beets, celery, onions, garlic, spinach etc. these crops can remove the sodium and chloride from the soil as fast as you are putting it in. Most other crops will not be able to remove the sodium fast enough and you will eventually have potassium deficiencies because the sodium is blocking the uptake of potassium.
What are your thoughts to get rid of the Salts? I heard that the rain/extra watering, will help with salts. I also read "Lime" (assuming rock, but maybe lime fruit) will help with sodium. Any thoughts are appreciated. From what you said, it sounds like it's not really worth it to ferment it as he does in the video or are the benefits to doing so? I was initially going to just mix urine with water (I also wanted to mix feces as well, do you have any thoughts about that being mixed in with the water/urine mix?) @@lukebrindax7465 to get rid of the salts, I would grow salty plants. Chard, beets, onions, garlic, celery, spinach etc. Lime (rock or fruit) will not get rid of sodium. You have to actively take it out of the soil and nothing is gonna do that better than a living organism that likes sodium. Poop is a great fertilizer but carries some risk of pathogens, if you are aggregating it from many people. Best to compost it first. There’s plenty of literature on how to do it. you should not mix it with your urine. Urine is great because you can mix it with water and irrigate easily. run it in drip lines, sprinklers, or watering cans. If you were to mix poop, it would be much harder to work with. Properly composted poop should be top dressed around plants. edit: to clarify. it's fine to have urine in your composting toilet mixed with poop and cover material. Then you compost it all together and top dress on the soil. If you already have urine separated from your humanure, then keep it separate because it's a lot easier to dispense urine in a watering can when it's not mixed with poop.

I don't have the space for onions/garlic, but I would love to grow those at some point. www.nrcs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/nrcs141p2_018280.pdf When I looked up "How to remove Sodium from the soil" this was the first article, and it was the one that spoke about lime and another compound called "Gypsum (calcium sulfate) " Now, one thing is, I'm looking to grow in growbags/smart-pots, so I figure that the salts might wash away (or to wash the bottom) of the smart pots... I'm not sure if that would help. As for fecal matter, I have heard a few comments about it. Many say to compost, but with nature, humans and animals just go directly into the soil, so I don't understand the need to compost. I eat extremely healthy, so there shouldn't be issue with parasites and nasties. I wasn't sure if I could mix it into a water solution to get a mix for spraying the soil as well as foliar feeding. I figured that some parts could clog the nozzle, but I thought it was a good idea. I don't really have a compost area here, nor did I think that composting fecal matter would be more beneficial than to just go right into the dirt but I don't know. I still remember ,growing up we have to collect our urine in the bucket everynight and the next morning we mix it with water and apply to our plants(flowers and orchids) the garden is llush and blooms all year. Learned it from my grandma.❤
When I was a kid I had an early morning ritual where I would pee in the backyard (don't ask me why) even then I noticed that the area that I directly peed on was dead BUT the surrounding grass was much lusher and greener than the rest of the yard. The truth is in the pudding or pee... 😁
Thank God! I love urine! it's powerful, effective and sterile, and yet no one will talk about it. I use an antique "piss-pot" rather than a toilet and the entire homestead is becoming well fertilized. Fortunately there's a forest at the edge of the land, where black-gold leaf mold and little spirits hang out. Thank you for keeping it real, brother!!

I learned about urine nitrogen for the garden. Even the water I use to rinse out drops of beer before returning collected in a jug. I let my cooking water cool from potato, pasta, boiled eggs, etc. Surprised the Dutch don't know about this.

One neighbour put a lock on their toilet so Mr. Honeyman couldn’t get nightsoil… NO ONE EVER RAIDED THEIR GARDENS!!! We knew how they fertilized it. But man did they have an awesome veggie patch!
For anybody concerned about making their garden smell like a latrine: please don't worry. In my experience, using urine creates no unpleasant odours at all, whether it's applied diluted as a fertiliser or neat as a compost booster. As soon as it hits the ground, or is dug into the soil, or is poured by the gallon onto the huge bin full of dry autumn leaves that I use to create leaf mould, the smell vanishes within 2 minutes. Presumably it's a biochemistry thing. The resulting odour is of a deciduous forest floor after a fall of rain - a clean, pleasant, 'earthy' smell without a trace of toilet. Fresh urine has no smell anyway, but even if you leave it in a sealed container for weeks (until it reeks!), the smell disappears as soon as it contacts organic matter.
Same here, I’ve been putting per on my compost and in my garden for years and it has no smell. I even use it as a weed killer in my driveway, full strength in the heat of the day and it burns them up ! Still no smell 😁
Ive been doing this over 3 yrs, off and on, with great success. But i didnt do it consistently. Problem was i wasnt satisfied with my collection process. Til now. Im a female, in my 70s. I now have a 5 gal bucket in my master bath. Fitted with a removable toilet seat. I use it to collect urine. Otherrwise i use the regular toilet. When my bucket is 25 to 30% full i put on the regular lid and transport it to the garden. There i fill the bucket with rain water. I use a oversized plastic measuring cup for dipping in and watering my plants. Take my bucket home and start over again. I Grow a fairly large garden. I rotate around the garden so everybody gets blessed. I generally do this twice a week and everything is beautiful. Between this and alfafa pellets im growing some awesome stuff and having the time of my life. Try it. Youll be convinced.
Another good one 👍🏻 Humanure composting system, where everything goes in the toilet bucket and is covered after each donation with sawdust. The bucket is emptied into a compost bay and covered with more sawdust. The finished compost bay, left for 12 months, makes the most amazing soil. Never any smell.

Here's something most people don't know. The best Chinese restaurants sprout mung beans and use in many dishes. Once initially sprouted they give a nutrient so the sprouts explode with growth. What is the nutrient? Urine. All over the world urine is looked up on as water of life, as one of the most valuable fertilizers and medicine available to the self sufficient being here in this place we're in
I'm in S. Ontario Canada, in Belleville. We get sub freezing temp for long periods up here, and composters definitely can freeze up. Mine is made from skids so its big and square, and the corners froze and I had about a 5 gal bucket worth of it still not froze. Its knee deep, and i am still building up material in there, and So I added 2× 4litre bottles of Urine to it, and it smelled like a bus stop for a day then gone, and its totally thawed out, just in time to be ahead of it for spring. Made some of this last fall and stored it outside all winter in half gallon plastic grapefruit juice bottles. (Milk or water gallon jugs would freeze and bust, juice jugs won’t) it’s dark brown now just as shown in the video. I Added a couple ounces of it to 4 gallons of seedling compost extract fertilizer and the 3 week old onion and cabbage seedlings I’m growing outside in clear totes jumped 2 inches in 3 days. Lots of leafy growth. This stuff smells like rotted vegetables and death, mixed with the compost extract at roughly one ounce per gallon there was no smell. Thank you sir.
I started using urine on all the plants even the ones I don’t like , which my spouse loves (I prefer food producing plants for water economy). All the plants I mean all of them keeps producing new leafs suddenly. I thought it killed the mangoes but the horticulturalist thinks the winter killed them as they are sensitive.
I keep a milk jug under my bathroom sink. When it gets a quarter of the way full I fill it up the rest of the way with water and pour it around the roots. My plants seem to loves it. Only been doing it for about a week but I can see a clear difference in how much darker green the lettuce is getting and my peppers are responding well also. The corn was already growing good so can't tell much of a difference in it yet.
I am so glad you have broached this topic that many people shy away from. Urine is a great fertilizer, but some people I've talked to shy away from the topic, like it's forbidden or something. It's just basic information which is free and awesome.

I am engaged in regenerative agriculture for my pastures for cattle. My small tractor with a 8ft boom sprayer is how I am going to get my jadam fertilizers out there. I bought the book but your channel does way much to simplify the process. Great information but I still recommend you get the book
Thank you for your ideas and suggested ratios. I live in Australia, where water is valued as a precious resource. It’s not uncommon for men to urinate outside to avoid flushing the toilet, and the spot to go is often by a lemon tree. Every night the dog and I go for a wee outside before bed. I try to vary my spot and have used the compost heap and straight to the watering can. Eucalyptus leaves are very woody (high carbon content) and contain Eucalyptus oil which impedes breakdown, unless you combine with nitrogen.
I knew you were gonna say urine. I pour mine on my wood chip pile in one area. I've dug into it and it's the only place where the high carbon wood chips are turning into dark, smaller pieces quickly. I think wood chips are 500 parts carbon to 1 part nitrogen and a good ratio is 30 parts carbon to 1 part nitrogen. When I saw the name of your channel I thought, "AWESOME! I've been using a mix of urine and water as a fertilizer, and the results are fantastic. I usually ignore the proportion of diluting, to the point that I use 50/50. Haven't had any problems so far, and the plants thrive.
I use it straight but never right on plant. Rather all through off season in prepping the soil and around dormant trees. If you look at orchard fertilizer it is all urea. Urine is all an established orchard needs.
People are going to do this as a result of this elegantly presented videoed information. The jokes are wonderfully healing because some are too funny and not in the lease elegant.
I used to use urea when I gardened for myself, but we are building a market garden and this wouldn’t be a big seller to the public. I’ll be using it in compost for sure!

After watching this video I decided to go ahead and make this. I have made the liquid fertilizers before. I started mine on the 8/6/22 and I decided to check on it today 9/7/22. I was expecting to have my nose shot from the smell but to my surprise when I open the container it was not as I thought. It seem like the microbes did a very good job taking care and reducing the bad smell. I am hoping to harvest mine around the end of the year or some time in January. Thanks again for the info.

@@gardenlikeaviking works great for an even long term release of nitrogen in the garden. Bio-char will actually soak up nutrients if added directly to garden soil or the compost pile until it's 'fully charged' only then releasing it as it decomposes so if it's fully saturated with nitrogen from soaking in urine before you add it, it immediately begins to discharge it slowly rather than uptaking from the soil first.

An very important point everyone is forgetting about peeing in the garden,or compost is that it saves a lot of water for not flushing the toilet . Water is spares and expensive in Australia. That’s why we got water tanks . It also saves the waist of plastic bottles from the hardware store if you make your own fertiliser. Eh guys we all live on the same planet

I do at moment I need to go, and I am near my hydroponicsystem, I do it in the water ot that system. As a kid I allready knew it was so good for plants. Found out that as I was on the lawn at my parents and I did it in a corner of the lawn that spot was so much more green and the grass was so more a live as the rest of the lawn.
I have been peeing on my compost and wood chip piles for years. My friends would come over and I would say "if you need to pee, go on the compost pile in the back yard. It really helped break things down faster. When the compost pile turned black is when I would stop. I will ferment some urine and test it out.
that's very inspiring, who knew lol this will be my third year growing a garden and i've never used any chemicals, just plant-based commercial extracts like neem which is awesome against any pests. but i'm itching to try all natural, free, home-made preparations.

Thanks for the tutorial on urine. I knew it was hot, so I put a gallon between the rows a week before planting my sweet corn. The stalks are like trees. Now I know how to ferment it to make it safe to use..

Love it! World pee in austerity. I obtain 5 gal., food grade buckets with lids, which are stackable, at the Bakery Dept. at grocery stores. I also understand that Zips hamburger sells them for $5 each. That is still a good deal.
I've been adding a spurt of urine to about one gallon of water and dosing my plants with this about once a week. been doing this for about 10 years now to great results
My bladder is not as good as it used to be. I noted that i was going and flushing the toilet AT LEAST 12 x per day. With 50% of the world living without clean drinking water i could not justify flushing 5 l x 12 ie 60 litres of potable water down a toilet ea day soooo i bought a camping compost toilet fir $40 and i use that. At first i emptied it in the toilet at the end of the day and did 1 big 9 L flush. Then i discovered its fertilizer properties. Now it goes into the compost. I will have a go at fermenting it. Good idea. :)

Urine is also a human medicine In Ayurveda and yogic practices the first urine is drunk in the morning as a health tonic The body at night when resting makes this medicine as the perfect antidote for all health issues It’s a tough practice , so I’ve done it once and struggle to do again but it’s a good thing to know 😊
Not only have I been using urine in my garden for years and I use it on everything ... You and believe how much water you save as well... I haven't used any store bought fertilizers in years and My garden is many many times better than it was prior
Amazing how much I urinate. I collect 32oz every day. I dump it on my compost pile and some on my woodchip compost bin and some in my 2nd 5gal bucket with leafmold. Looking forward to using it all in 2023. Thanks. Nate
Thanks for your video! I’m starting my journey into natural farming methods and have already made my lactobacillus culture. I’m thinking of working on this next. I have a couple of questions though. If it takes months to ferment and the tub is outside, how do you take care of it in the winter? Do you bring the smelly jug in so it doesn’t break in freezing temperatures? What about the microbes will they survive the freezing temperatures in that tub? Thanks again!
its ok to leave everything outside during the winter... most my ferments I just don't refill with water at the end of the season so the barrels are about 1/3 full and they freeze solid for 2 months strait and no the microbes just go to sleep they don't die
Use mustered cake . Ferment it in water for 5 to 15 days according to your environmental temperature. You get a balanced fertilizer. Mix it it water in 10:1 ratio then use. You can use jaggery to accelerate fermentation process.
I have health problems where I have to urinate like 5 times per night and the bathroom is too far away so I just pee in mason jars and dump it out the window.. the grass is super green and grows fast. Does not burn the grass and doesn't smell
I use ,1/4 of that stuff in a (5) gal. Bucket a spray it (3) feet around a mandarin tree this year and most of the branches went right down to the ground laden right now and they are huge.
Pro tip..... diesel exhaust fluid is just urea. It's about 6 to 10 dollars a gallon and a little goes a long way. It's almost pure nitrogen and safe for plants as long as you don't overdo it.
Great video! I collect and use my urine and feel wasteful when I don’t! Grossnes warning: every month women have additional nutrients to add to the compost/ferments if and when covered up enough not to attract big animals. What climate are you in and do you leave your buckets out during all the seasons? I’m in the freeze zone 5 and the freeze/thaw will buckle the flimsy plastic buckets so i need to figure out what I’m going to do. Bringing in stinky weed ferments is probably not a good idea. I love the harder plastic muck buckets that are food grade and able to take freeze/thaw and I freeze water in them for ice sculptures! But they don’t have lids and don’t have an even top for tight fitting coverings. I just bought a food grade 5 gal bucket and the plastic is so flimsy and soft I’m not buying more for fetid swamp water but instead going with the industrial regular 5 gal buckets. I wonder how much the type of plastic matters for something sitting with so much microbial activity. My gut tells me it does matter, less plastic chems is always best. Where do folks get buckets?
I'm in zone 5b and my buckets and barrels are left outside all winter long and they freeze solid for 2 months strait with no ill effects... but I have very heavy duty 55gal barrels and i empty most the liquid out of them so minimal remains
@@gardenlikeaviking great tips, thanks! I’m encouraged by the lush fertility of your garden in 5b! I’m nor lacking for lushness in my spot in southern Vermont. I am lacking for sun so I focus mainly on native perennials and interplant food amongst them. And fruit shrubs. Also videos about practical utensils and just the daily or weekly practice of cycling through the buckets and what’s inside and which tools to use when would be very appreciated! I’m still figuring what kind of ladle situation to use, which stick is the designated stirrer, how to cap these tools so the flies don’t bother them. I find the flies come en masse when I open a bucket and as long as I cap and rinse off spills and there’s no attractant for them, they disperse. It’s a turn-off for sure. Only the hardy! I am very interested to see how you (mostly) empty your barrels to prepare for winter. I have a batch I just started with very active ingredients and would like to let it sit for a while. I’m assuming any freezing of microbial life revitalizes it when the heat returns. Thank you!
Yay! Finally- I find out how to use urine. I tried a couple of years ago in my flower garden in the city, and I burned the hell out of my favorite Jasmine. I'd been told by a friend of a friend that urine was the best fertilizer so I poured it straight on the ground around my plant. (I was very enthusiatic so I used about a half gallon.)
I do use it full strength before a good rain, but don't go within the drip line. I overdid the fruit trees one yr and they didn't blossom. They did have vigorous growth though!
I am really excited about the information you shared because it complements the method of gardening method I am gravitating to. My question is, can stale urine be stored and used at a later date. Lets say up to 6 months later.
Interesting technique. One simple alternative is composting sawdust with urine. Sawdust requires about 3% of its mass weight in nitrogen to begin breaking down, 30:1 C N ratio. Urine is 6% N. I'm guessing the mix ratio would be something like 2 parts sawdust to 1 part urine. Never tried that as I suspect it would reek up the neighbourhood.
I cant help but think that to bubble air through the fermenter, helping and multiplying the bugs, would speed up the process so less tubs need to be stored.
This is an anaerobic dominant fermentation process so there is nothing gained by an air bubbler… I’ve done it both ways and it produces a completely different product
Urine that dark May need a Dr consult for dehydration or such. Some meds and foods etc turn it darker too I know. But perhaps you need to drink more water?
thanks for your videos- will watch more of them very soon. you have given me a bit of hope on small scale commercial farm ( i am American in the Philippines most farms are only 5 acre in size ) i tried leasing one hector to grow corn with the normal chemicals and just broke even the labors made money and the owner made money and all i did was get back my investment-- no corn for my livestock. but now i have hope i can try again with home made fertilizers- now i have to see your videos on leaf mold-- cheers
wow thank you for sharing your story my friend and this is a somewhat common experience I am hearing about people just breaking even (if they are lucky!).... for corn you'll want lots of this fertilizer and the ash fertilizer if you can burn brush and spread the ashes on the fields thats great and also make the JADAM grass fertilizer with lots of fast growing grasses as those are highest in Nitro and corn is a type of grass
@@gardenlikeaviking thanks for the additional input and suggestions. you do give me ideas. i do have about 2 hectors of very hilly land i was trying to figure a way to get a bit of corn. but i may be thinking wrong. the hillside would be better at growing grasses and doing free range chickens- less corn needed. vetivier grass is a great grass for erosion and has very deep roots it should be loaded with nutrition- it is used for cows and goat as i am told but i am not sure how they like it i am told by an experienced lady that i can plant it dense and use it as fencing for chickens. no well but i could do rain water collection for most of the needs of chickens and find a way to haul water in dry times . all fun, wish i was younger but i am doing this for my kids so if i can just live long enough to get them started-- thanks again
I saw someone put LAB in the urine, so I've been doing it that way. I believe the lactobacillus is quicker, but thanks for the info for another option.
LABS is a great substance and I'm actually just now making a video on how to make it!... but the purpose of the leaf mould is diversity of organisms... the LABS is pure Lactobascillus and the leaf mould has thousands upon thousands of different kinds of IMO's and that is what we want here

In the old movies western one of John Wayne I think you catch a glimpse of a tall ceramic or porcelain chamber pot or vase, I guess their about 3 feet or more high and have a very narrow mouth at the very top then flares out wider on the length down, it would be possibly ideal use
yes that would be pretty good but for me I like to use anything with an air tight lid because the ammonia will quickly evaporate and smell quite awful lol
My question is: Would this be possibly a quicker route to eradicate CONTAMINATED SOILS in a greenhouse situation? And does it put an end to the heavy metals and highly toxic soil which was used?
the ideal thing for helping purify and balance contaminated soils is this microbial solution th-cam.com/video/Lv-TOGhwlW4/w-d-xo.html .... make this and water your contaminated soil with it... and so long as no plants are in the ground you can use it pure undiluted for best results treat the soil 5-8 times with this before planting

I think I'm just gonna add this directly to my JLF fermentation tanks that include many of my noxious weeds that I'm avoiding the reseeding of rather than isolating it with some leaf mold so I can use it sooner and see how that goes.
that can work but it gives you much less control over the nitrogen you're giving to the plants... brewing them separately allows you to stop giving the Urine (pure nitrogen) once the plants begin setting fruits and you get a much better end product
@@gardenlikeaviking That's a good point, maybe I'll just do it with one smaller batch of my JLF (and have several JLFS going so I have some without the urine), and do a separate isolated concentrate for future use so by the time I'm done with the initial JLF I'll have this to use as needed.

Professional regenerative farmer here. thank you for this video! More people need to know about your urine. There are a few important points that have been missed…
The fermentation works, but not worth the labor. 1 tablespoon per gallon is almost nothing. You are getting most of your benefits from all the other things you’re doing, not the urine. If your primary source of nutrients is urine this is what you should do: add one cup of urine per 1 gallon of water. For all watering. You can do this “ almost” indefinitely. I say “almost” because if you are primarily using urine as a fertilizer eventually you’ll get sodium and chloride toxicity (especially if you are in the southwest United States where the soil already has high levels of sodium and chloride). Sodium will block the uptake of potassium, and sodium stays in the soil. Chloride will block the uptake of nitrate, however fortunately chloride washes out of the soil when it rains. So if you are in a rainy area, the extra chloride from the urine will actually be beneficial. However the extra sodium will still be a problem. If your primary source of nutrients is urine, you should grow crops that are high in salt. Chard, beets, celery, onions, garlic, spinach etc. these crops can remove the sodium and chloride from the soil as fast as you are putting it in. Most other crops will not be able to remove the sodium fast enough and you will eventually have potassium deficiencies because the sodium is blocking the uptake of potassium.
What are your thoughts to get rid of the Salts? I heard that the rain/extra watering, will help with salts. I also read "Lime" (assuming rock, but maybe lime fruit) will help with sodium. Any thoughts are appreciated.
From what you said, it sounds like it's not really worth it to ferment it as he does in the video or are the benefits to doing so? I was initially going to just mix urine with water (I also wanted to mix feces as well, do you have any thoughts about that being mixed in with the water/urine mix?)

Lime (rock or fruit) will not get rid of sodium. You have to actively take it out of the soil and nothing is gonna do that better than a living organism that likes sodium.
Poop is a great fertilizer but carries some risk of pathogens, if you are aggregating it from many people. Best to compost it first. There’s plenty of literature on how to do it. you should not mix it with your urine. Urine is great because you can mix it with water and irrigate easily. run it in drip lines, sprinklers, or watering cans. If you were to mix poop, it would be much harder to work with. Properly composted poop should be top dressed around plants.
edit: to clarify. it's fine to have urine in your composting toilet mixed with poop and cover material. Then you compost it all together and top dress on the soil. If you already have urine separated from your humanure, then keep it separate because it's a lot easier to dispense urine in a watering can when it's not mixed with poop.

When I looked up "How to remove Sodium from the soil" this was the first article, and it was the one that spoke about lime and another compound called "Gypsum (calcium sulfate) "
Now, one thing is, I'm looking to grow in growbags/smart-pots, so I figure that the salts might wash away (or to wash the bottom) of the smart pots... I'm not sure if that would help.
As for fecal matter, I have heard a few comments about it. Many say to compost, but with nature, humans and animals just go directly into the soil, so I don't understand the need to compost. I eat extremely healthy, so there shouldn't be issue with parasites and nasties. I wasn't sure if I could mix it into a water solution to get a mix for spraying the soil as well as foliar feeding. I figured that some parts could clog the nozzle, but I thought it was a good idea.
I don't really have a compost area here, nor did I think that composting fecal matter would be more beneficial than to just go right into the dirt but I don't know. I just look at nature and don't see it happening when animals/humans just go whenever.

I still remember ,growing up we have to collect our urine in the bucket everynight and the next morning we mix it with water and apply to our plants(flowers and orchids) the garden is llush and blooms all year. Learned it from my grandma.❤

When I was a kid I had an early morning ritual where I would pee in the backyard (don't ask me why) even then I noticed that the area that I directly peed on was dead BUT the surrounding grass was much lusher and greener than the rest of the yard. The truth is in the pudding or pee... 😁

Thank God! I love urine! it's powerful, effective and sterile, and yet no one will talk about it. I use an antique "piss-pot" rather than a toilet and the entire homestead is becoming well fertilized. Fortunately there's a forest at the edge of the land, where black-gold leaf mold and little spirits hang out. Thank you for keeping it real, brother!!

I learned about urine nitrogen for the garden. Even the water I use to rinse out drops of beer before returning collected in a jug. I let my cooking water cool from potato, pasta, boiled eggs, etc. Surprised the Dutch don't know about this.

For anybody concerned about making their garden smell like a latrine: please don't worry. In my experience, using urine creates no unpleasant odours at all, whether it's applied diluted as a fertiliser or neat as a compost booster. As soon as it hits the ground, or is dug into the soil, or is poured by the gallon onto the huge bin full of dry autumn leaves that I use to create leaf mould, the smell vanishes within 2 minutes.
Presumably it's a biochemistry thing. The resulting odour is of a deciduous forest floor after a fall of rain - a clean, pleasant, 'earthy' smell without a trace of toilet.
Fresh urine has no smell anyway, but even if you leave it in a sealed container for weeks (until it reeks!), the smell disappears as soon as it contacts organic matter.

Same here, I’ve been putting per on my compost and in my garden for years and it has no smell.
I even use it as a weed killer in my driveway, full strength in the heat of the day and it burns them up ! Still no smell 😁

Ive been doing this over 3 yrs, off and on, with great success. But i didnt do it consistently. Problem was i wasnt satisfied with my collection process. Til now. Im a female, in my 70s. I now have a 5 gal bucket in my master bath. Fitted with a removable toilet seat. I use it to collect urine. Otherrwise i use the regular toilet. When my bucket is 25 to 30% full i put on the regular lid and transport it to the garden. There i fill the bucket with rain water. I use a oversized plastic measuring cup for dipping in and watering my plants. Take my bucket home and start over again. I Grow a fairly large garden. I rotate around the garden so everybody gets blessed. I generally do this twice a week and everything is beautiful.
Between this and alfafa pellets im growing some awesome stuff and having the time of my life.
Try it. Youll be convinced.

Humanure composting system, where everything goes in the toilet bucket and is covered after each donation with sawdust. The bucket is emptied into a compost bay and covered with more sawdust.
The finished compost bay, left for 12 months, makes the most amazing soil. Never any smell.

Here's something most people don't know. The best Chinese restaurants sprout mung beans and use in many dishes. Once initially sprouted they give a nutrient so the sprouts explode with growth. What is the nutrient? Urine. All over the world urine is looked up on as water of life, as one of the most valuable fertilizers and medicine available to the self sufficient being here in this place we're in

I'm in S. Ontario Canada, in Belleville. We get sub freezing temp for long periods up here, and composters definitely can freeze up. Mine is made from skids so its big and square, and the corners froze and I had about a 5 gal bucket worth of it still not froze. Its knee deep, and i am still building up material in there, and So I added 2× 4litre bottles of Urine to it, and it smelled like a bus stop for a day then gone, and its totally thawed out, just in time to be ahead of it for spring. I will need to watch this video repeatedly. I will also have to put title in my file to find it again. Another commenter is sending her spouse to directly deposit his urine in the compost. My neighbor will laugh his arse off.
Made some of this last fall and stored it outside all winter in half gallon plastic grapefruit juice bottles. (Milk or water gallon jugs would freeze and bust, juice jugs won’t) it’s dark brown now just as shown in the video.
I Added a couple ounces of it to 4 gallons of seedling compost extract fertilizer and the 3 week old onion and cabbage seedlings I’m growing outside in clear totes jumped 2 inches in 3 days. Lots of leafy growth.
This stuff smells like rotted vegetables and death, mixed with the compost extract at roughly one ounce per gallon there was no smell. Thank you sir.

Any effect on crop taste?
I started using urine on all the plants even the ones I don’t like , which my spouse loves (I prefer food producing plants for water economy). All the plants I mean all of them keeps producing new leafs suddenly. I thought it killed the mangoes but the horticulturalist thinks the winter killed them as they are sensitive.
I keep a milk jug under my bathroom sink. When it gets a quarter of the way full I fill it up the rest of the way with water and pour it around the roots. My plants seem to loves it. Only been doing it for about a week but I can see a clear difference in how much darker green the lettuce is getting and my peppers are responding well also. The corn was already growing good so can't tell much of a difference in it yet.
I am so glad you have broached this topic that many people shy away from. Urine is a great fertilizer, but some people I've talked to shy away from the topic, like it's forbidden or something. It's just basic information which is free and awesome.
My daughter in law won’t eat anything from my garden because I told them I use my pee 😏

I am engaged in regenerative agriculture for my pastures for cattle. My small tractor with a 8ft boom sprayer is how I am going to get my jadam fertilizers out there. I bought the book but your channel does way much to simplify the process. Great information but I still recommend you get the book
Thank you for your ideas and suggested ratios. I live in Australia, where water is valued as a precious resource. It’s not uncommon for men to urinate outside to avoid flushing the toilet, and the spot to go is often by a lemon tree. Every night the dog and I go for a wee outside before bed. I try to vary my spot and have used the compost heap and straight to the watering can. Eucalyptus leaves are very woody (high carbon content) and contain Eucalyptus oil which impedes breakdown, unless you combine with nitrogen.
I knew you were gonna say urine. I pour mine on my wood chip pile in one area. I've dug into it and it's the only place where the high carbon wood chips are turning into dark, smaller pieces quickly. I think wood chips are 500 parts carbon to 1 part nitrogen and a good ratio is 30 parts carbon to 1 part nitrogen. When I saw the name of your channel I thought, "AWESOME! This is what I want to learn more about and teach about too." Great info on your channel, I subscribed right away when I saw your wood ash video. Thank you.
I use diluted urine 1:1 dilution every day on my plant. No issues and lots of fruits and flowers
yes I've done it that way as well....but personally I find this method of "fermentation with microbes" to produce a much more powerful fertilizer

I've been using a mix of urine and water as a fertilizer, and the results are fantastic. I usually ignore the proportion of diluting, to the point that I use 50/50. Haven't had any problems so far, and the plants thrive.
I use it straight but never right on plant. Rather all through off season in prepping the soil and around dormant trees. If you look at orchard fertilizer it is all urea. Urine is all an established orchard needs.

After watching this video I decided to go ahead and make this. I have made the liquid fertilizers before. I started mine on the 8/6/22 and I decided to check on it today 9/7/22. I was expecting to have my nose shot from the smell but to my surprise when I open the container it was not as I thought. It seem like the microbes did a very good job taking care and reducing the bad smell. I am hoping to harvest mine around the end of the year or some time in January. Thanks again for the info.

@@gardenlikeaviking works great for an even long term release of nitrogen in the garden. Bio-char will actually soak up nutrients if added directly to garden soil or the compost pile until it's 'fully charged' only then releasing it as it decomposes so if it's fully saturated with nitrogen from soaking in urine before you add it, it immediately begins to discharge it slowly rather than uptaking from the soil first.

An very important point everyone is forgetting about peeing in the garden,or compost is that it saves a lot of water for not flushing the toilet . Water is spares and expensive in Australia. That’s why we got water tanks . It also saves the waist of plastic bottles from the hardware store if you make your own fertiliser. Eh guys we all live on the same planet

I do at moment I need to go, and I am near my hydroponicsystem, I do it in the water ot that system. As a kid I allready knew it was so good for plants. Found out that as I was on the lawn at my parents and I did it in a corner of the lawn that spot was so much more green and the grass was so more a live as the rest of the lawn.
I have been peeing on my compost and wood chip piles for years. My friends would come over and I would say "if you need to pee, go on the compost pile in the back yard. It really helped break things down faster. When the compost pile turned black is when I would stop. I will ferment some urine and test it out.
that's very inspiring, who knew lol this will be my third year growing a garden and i've never used any chemicals, just plant-based commercial extracts like neem which is awesome against any pests. but i'm itching to try all natural, free, home-made preparations.
Do you know if neem oil will stop slugs in the garden

LOL I wish I could find a place that would let me grow. I had to stop collecting cuz I already have several gallons that have been fermenting for over 4 years now and that's just a small tip of the iceberg of what I've accumulated, jonesing because I want to grow so bad.

Love it! World pee in austerity. I obtain 5 gal., food grade buckets with lids, which are stackable, at the Bakery Dept. at grocery stores. I also understand that Zips hamburger sells them for $5 each. That is still a good deal.
I've been adding a spurt of urine to about one gallon of water and dosing my plants with this about once a week. been doing this for about 10 years now to great results

My bladder is not as good as it used to be. I noted that i was going and flushing the toilet AT LEAST 12 x per day. With 50% of the world living without clean drinking water i could not justify flushing 5 l x 12 ie 60 litres of potable water down a toilet ea day soooo i bought a camping compost toilet fir $40 and i use that. At first i emptied it in the toilet at the end of the day and did 1 big 9 L flush. Then i discovered its fertilizer properties. Now it goes into the compost. I will have a go at fermenting it. Good idea. :)

Not only have I been using urine in my garden for years and I use it on everything ... You and believe how much water you save as well... I haven't used any store bought fertilizers in years and My garden is many many times better than it was prior

Amazing how much I urinate. I collect 32oz every day. I dump it on my compost pile and some on my woodchip compost bin and some in my 2nd 5gal bucket with leafmold. Looking forward to using it all in 2023. Thanks. Nate
Thanks for your video! I’m starting my journey into natural farming methods and have already made my lactobacillus culture. I’m thinking of working on this next. I have a couple of questions though. If it takes months to ferment and the tub is outside, how do you take care of it in the winter? Do you bring the smelly jug in so it doesn’t break in freezing temperatures? What about the microbes will they survive the freezing temperatures in that tub? Thanks again!
its ok to leave everything outside during the winter... most my ferments I just don't refill with water at the end of the season so the barrels are about 1/3 full and they freeze solid for 2 months strait and no the microbes just go to sleep they don't die
Use mustered cake . Ferment it in water for 5 to 15 days according to your environmental temperature. You get a balanced fertilizer. Mix it it water in 10:1 ratio then use. You can use jaggery to accelerate fermentation process.
I have health problems where I have to urinate like 5 times per night and the bathroom is too far away so I just pee in mason jars and dump it out the window.. the grass is super green and grows fast. Does not burn the grass and doesn't smell

I use ,1/4 of that stuff in a (5) gal. Bucket a spray it (3) feet around a mandarin tree this year and most of the branches went right down to the ground laden right now and they are huge.
Pro tip..... diesel exhaust fluid is just urea. It's about 6 to 10 dollars a gallon and a little goes a long way. It's almost pure nitrogen and safe for plants as long as you don't overdo it.

Great video! I collect and use my urine and feel wasteful when I don’t! Grossnes warning: every month women have additional nutrients to add to the compost/ferments if and when covered up enough not to attract big animals.
What climate are you in and do you leave your buckets out during all the seasons? I’m in the freeze zone 5 and the freeze/thaw will buckle the flimsy plastic buckets so i need to figure out what I’m going to do. Bringing in stinky weed ferments is probably not a good idea. I love the harder plastic muck buckets that are food grade and able to take freeze/thaw and I freeze water in them for ice sculptures! But they don’t have lids and don’t have an even top for tight fitting coverings. I just bought a food grade 5 gal bucket and the plastic is so flimsy and soft I’m not buying more for fetid swamp water but instead going with the industrial regular 5 gal buckets. I wonder how much the type of plastic matters for something sitting with so much microbial activity. My gut tells me it does matter, less plastic chems is always best. Where do folks get buckets?
I'm in zone 5b and my buckets and barrels are left outside all winter long and they freeze solid for 2 months strait with no ill effects... but I have very heavy duty 55gal barrels and i empty most the liquid out of them so minimal remains

I am lacking for sun so I focus mainly on native perennials and interplant food amongst them. And fruit shrubs. Also videos about practical utensils and just the daily or weekly practice of cycling through the buckets and what’s inside and which tools to use when would be very appreciated! I’m still figuring what kind of ladle situation to use, which stick is the designated stirrer, how to cap these tools so the flies don’t bother them. I find the flies come en masse when I open a bucket and as long as I cap and rinse off spills and there’s no attractant for them, they disperse. It’s a turn-off for sure. Only the hardy! I am very interested to see how you (mostly) empty your barrels to prepare for winter. I have a batch I just started with very active ingredients and would like to let it sit for a while. I’m assuming any freezing of microbial life revitalizes it when the heat returns. Thank you!

Yay! Finally- I find out how to use urine. I tried a couple of years ago in my flower garden in the city, and I burned the hell out of my favorite Jasmine. I'd been told by a friend of a friend that urine was the best fertilizer so I poured it straight on the ground around my plant. (I was very enthusiatic so I used about a half gallon.)
LOL this is a common occurrence with using urine people get very enthusiastic and end up killing the plant!... well now you know
I do use it full strength before a good rain, but don't go within the drip line.
I overdid the fruit trees one yr and they didn't blossom. They did have vigorous growth though!

Interesting technique. One simple alternative is composting sawdust with urine. Sawdust requires about 3% of its mass weight in nitrogen to begin breaking down, 30:1 C N ratio. Urine is 6% N. I'm guessing the mix ratio would be something like 2 parts sawdust to 1 part urine. Never tried that as I suspect it would reek up the neighbourhood.
yes that is a very good composting technique but you're right for sure it would smell beyond belief!!
I cant help but think that to bubble air through the fermenter, helping and multiplying the bugs, would speed up the process so less tubs need to be stored.
This is an anaerobic dominant fermentation process so there is nothing gained by an air bubbler… I’ve done it both ways and it produces a completely different product
Urine that dark May need a Dr consult for dehydration or such. Some meds and foods etc turn it darker too I know. But perhaps you need to drink more water?

thanks for your videos- will watch more of them very soon. you have given me a bit of hope on small scale commercial farm ( i am American in the Philippines most farms are only 5 acre in size ) i tried leasing one hector to grow corn with the normal chemicals and just broke even the labors made money and the owner made money and all i did was get back my investment-- no corn for my livestock. but now i have hope i can try again with home made fertilizers- now i have to see your videos on leaf mold-- cheers
wow thank you for sharing your story my friend and this is a somewhat common experience I am hearing about people just breaking even (if they are lucky!).... for corn you'll want lots of this fertilizer and the ash fertilizer if you can burn brush and spread the ashes on the fields thats great and also make the JADAM grass fertilizer with lots of fast growing grasses as those are highest in Nitro and corn is a type of grass

you do give me ideas. i do have about 2 hectors of very hilly land i was trying to figure a way to get a bit of corn. but i may be thinking wrong. the hillside would be better at growing grasses and doing free range chickens- less corn needed.
vetivier grass is a great grass for erosion and has very deep roots it should be loaded with nutrition- it is used for cows and goat as i am told but i am not sure how they like it
i am told by an experienced lady that i can plant it dense and use it as fencing for chickens.
no well but i could do rain water collection for most of the needs of chickens and find a way to haul water in dry times

I saw someone put LAB in the urine, so I've been doing it that way. I believe the lactobacillus is quicker, but thanks for the info for another option.
LABS is a great substance and I'm actually just now making a video on how to make it!... but the purpose of the leaf mould is diversity of organisms... the LABS is pure Lactobascillus and the leaf mould has thousands upon thousands of different kinds of IMO's and that is what we want here
Oh fa sho. While you're waiting a year for the good stuff, you can have the LABS in the meantime within a week.
I was pissing on my garlic chives & tomato plants for weeks (to my family's horror when they found out after sampling some). I did notice some eventual ill effects due to pH increases, so I stopped.

In the old movies western one of John Wayne I think you catch a glimpse of a tall ceramic or porcelain chamber pot or vase, I guess their about 3 feet or more high and have a very narrow mouth at the very top then flares out wider on the length down, it would be possibly ideal use
yes that would be pretty good but for me I like to use anything with an air tight lid because the ammonia will quickly evaporate and smell quite awful lol

And does it put an end to the heavy metals and highly toxic soil which was used?
the ideal thing for helping purify and balance contaminated soils is this microbial solution th-cam.com/video/Lv-TOGhwlW4/w-d-xo.html .... make this and water your contaminated soil with it... and so long as no plants are in the ground you can use it pure undiluted for best results treat the soil 5-8 times with this before planting

I think I'm just gonna add this directly to my JLF fermentation tanks that include many of my noxious weeds that I'm avoiding the reseeding of rather than isolating it with some leaf mold so I can use it sooner and see how that goes.
that can work but it gives you much less control over the nitrogen you're giving to the plants... brewing them separately allows you to stop giving the Urine (pure nitrogen) once the plants begin setting fruits and you get a much better end product
@@gardenlikeaviking That's a good point, maybe I'll just do it with one smaller batch of my JLF (and have several JLFS going so I have some without the urine), and do a separate isolated concentrate for future use so by the time I'm done with the initial JLF I'll have this to use as needed.
