      Thank you, Mrs. Jax! Yes, we prefer to work on older pieces that aren't MDF BUT those pieces don't always work for our customers. So we work with what we have. And we are sooooo fortunate to have Pops bring his talents to the table with his nature footage, trivia questions and editing. 😘

    So glad that James Bondo got a mention this week 😆 Congrats on your win, Dani! Such a gorgeous color and that stain is a perfect contrast. It's spring in a dresser! I hear ya on the temps but we need to be careful what we wish for, end of the week they're already predicting over 90°. Eek! I have a desk with this type of finish/veneer, now I'm confident about sanding down to the veneer. Love it ladies, this turned out beautiful 😍🧡🌵

    This turned out so beautiful I wasn’t sure about that green but the stained wood toned it down. I have stained veneer over mdf multiple times and yes like you said it is very thin. I love gel stain so much more than penetrating stain.

    • @secondchanceohana
      @secondchanceohana  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Annetta! Thanks so much! The green looks a little deeper and darker indoors so we think it is going to look great in our friend's house but if it doesn't we will deepen the color a bit and repaint. It is so easy with the sprayer. Yay, for gel stain! What brand and colors are your favorites? We are thinking about trying some others but it is so expensive, we don't want to try products we aren't going to like. 🤗

    I have had good experiences with using a stripper to get that black finish off of MDF. I use Klean Strip 15 minute stripper. It is smelly, but if you wear a good respirator, you can't smell it at all. It works really fast and it's worth it to not sand through the veneer. Good job on the transformation!

    • @secondchanceohana
      @secondchanceohana  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, Katie! I have tried a couple different ones that didn't seem to do much so gave up on strippers. I will see if I can find that one, I don't see it on Amazon but will check our local Home Depot. 😍

  • @mollyholmes9647
    @mollyholmes9647 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm surprised that there is only one other comment pointing that you are NOT staining MDF. You are staining wood veneer which is the same as staining any other wood. The title of your video is misleading.

    • @secondchanceohana
      @secondchanceohana  ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically, that is true! The big challenge with this is that we had to remove a thick layer of paint off of a very thin layer of veneer. Thinner than the average veneers that we have encountered (and it was probably our first large piece that was made of MDF substrate).

    Am I missing something?! This isn’t MDF?!

    • @secondchanceohana
      @secondchanceohana  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it is MDF with a thin layer of wood veneer on the surface.

    • @pfyitah
      @pfyitah ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@secondchanceohana my point is that you’re not staining “MDF”. You’re essentially just staining hardwood as it has grain. The two are completely separate from one another.
      To be an actual demonstration of staining MDF would be exactly that, fibreboard with no grain.

    • @secondchanceohana
      @secondchanceohana  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok. Yes, that is true. We would not try to stain actual MDF without veneer.
