Getting the Classic Dr. Dre Sound in The Box

  • So, I found myself coming back to the BX Console SSL 4000 E because of the fact that it is low CPU, and also, after a few test mixes, it has the closest tone to mixes done on the real console. In this video I show the SSL console that Dr. Dre used, and mixed one of my own beats using his methods, along with the recreation of his console in FL Studio. For those who like to recreate consoles to mix on in their computer, you will find this video to informative and entertaining. Enjoy!

    You should mention DJ QUIK on the engineering & mixing... He did a lot at DR and mixed all of the All Eyez On Me album.

    Another great presentation. I love the sound of the SSL 4000E series board on The Chronic and the Death Row music of that era.....Keep up the good work!

    Drums: 1073 on individual mics or samples, ssl comp from the channel with high ratio (8-10) to a tape machine (uad studer 15 IPs with 499 tape or 456)
    Drum buss: ssl (pushed) ssl bus comp (slow attack) slamming the tape machine.
    Something like that? Great video

    Again awesome video my guy keep doin' your thing.
    Watching other videos is like watching a TV commercial were people just gloss over things. Yours are like sitting in a studio listening to a professional while soaking up relevant knowledge and experience.

    Dre used the 4000G series console …..DBX 160 on drums into a tape machine through the 4000 G and then into another tape machine after that. Also he used the AMX R-16 for his reverb….he had the orange knobbed version of the 4000 G during the chronic 2001 mix. But if you really want Dr. Dres sound….you need to get an MPC 5000 or older. Matter of fact even though he used a 3000 the 5000 has a lot of his sounds in it. On the kick boost hard at 1200-1450 Hz cut between 500 - 700 and boost at 50-200 for his kick sound.

      Yeah, the 4000 G was the Aftermath sound? And the 4052E was the Death Row sound?

      @@vigilantestylez I believe that is correct….honestly I haven’t heard many better albums than Chronic 2001 as far as clarity and bass….i know his G console had the pultec orange EQ’s …..the Japanese version I guess. Of course his mastering engineer was a legend too.

      Thank you! I have an idea that I've been messing around with, that I might make a video about. And I've realized that we wear a lot of hats when making music. And I find it essential to separate different processes. In this case separating the production / tracking process, from the mixing, from the mastering. Each phase has its own processing. The reason why I say this, is in the production and tracking stage, there is also some kind of treatment to the tracks. Where a producer might put a lot of their own EQ and compression and whatnot over a track before sending it to the mixer. So far I've been playing around with the waves magma channel strip. I'm not a fan of the company, but that channel strip is pretty fire. And I haven't made a video on it yet but I'm really liking the sound I'm getting using it during my production stage. Basically to prepare my tracks and give them some consistent vibe before I even start mixing. Just to get each sound kind of in a similar tone before I even start mixing. Then when I take it to the mixing process I'm doing it like Dr Dre. Then the mastering process is really simple it's just ozone. Because there's so much mojo by then you can't add any more analog emulation or analog character before it starts to sound lofi. So I probably should make a video about that. Thinking about it. Otherwise this is where I'll talk about it right here. In this comment. Figured I wanted to share that! 😎💯💯💯💯

      @vigilantestylez what do you put after your G Buss Compressor

    • @vigilantestylez
      @vigilantestylez  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jaybryanbeatz2728 nothing. You can put a tape machine plugin to emulate mixing to master tape. Otherwise nothing is fine. Depending on the Dre era you want to emulate. Early Dre, use a tape machine after the bus compressor. Later Dre, print without tape because they went to protools instead of tape later.

    Did you check out the new SSL 4K E from SSL?

    • @vigilantestylez
      @vigilantestylez  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I haven't yet. Also, an update. So, I found out that many engineers who use the BX Console plugins usually turn the THD and VGain ALL off. The saturation from Brainworx is not very good, and is kind of cheap sounding. It still retains the console character, but it is better to use your own preferred saturation or mix clean, and run the mix through something analog, like tape. The SSL Native plugins are pretty clean, and their saturation is nice, I haven't tried the E series from them yet, but the Brainworx TMT is nice, and they did a wonderful job with the EQ's, compressors, and the extra options on their channel strips.

      I feel you but the new SSL 4K E from SSL has that original sound from the console now, not like the SSL Native Channel Strip 2 which is more clean.

    How Did you determine settings for master bus?

    • @vigilantestylez
      @vigilantestylez  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The master bus would just be the SSL bus compressor. It was typical to set the ratio to 2, slowest attack, fastest release. Or you can set the release to auto. Adjust the threshold until you get 2db gain reduction and I tend to do that part at the end of the mix, others say to set it first and mix into it. But the master section is just the master bus compressor. You can add a tape machine after the bus compressor if you want. That simulates printing the mix to tape.
