    To answer a couple of questions....the button on the steering wheel is the line lock, which is used to lock the front brakes as the burnout procedure begins and also to assist in staging the car. The clutch is only used for staging; planetary transmissions don't require clutching between shifts. And this is a pre-EFI car (they're rpm-limited), meaning he's shifting at around 11,000 rpm. Quite a feat for a 500 inch big block.

      @joshlewis5065 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This transmission is not a planetary (old school Lenco style). It's like a regular 5 speed dog box, except it has 2 cluster gears, and tapered dog engagement to only allow for shifting up gears and not down. The controls are pretty similar with reverse using a different lever, but this transmission is like a conventional transmission laid on it's side and woth another cluster gear on the other side of the main shaft.

      I actually got a rare opportunity this past season to help the John Gaydosh pro stock team when they came to Houston. I've been following the sport for 20+ yrs so I had a bit of an idea what goes on to make those cars run but I wasn't prepared for just how much work it is lol. Basically what you saw those guys doing....pulling the transmission and clutch, swapping out rear gear ratios, rotating the tires....it's fun but a lot of hard work. Memories I'll never forget

      andrewt248 -- In the carbureted days which this was they redlined around 11,500. New era fuel injected NHRA make them have rev limiters at 10,500 RPM. One of the reasons they are slower than the carburetor years.

      We have to pull the transmission ( to possibly change gearing), we need to disassemble the clutch and regrind the surfaces, possibly change the 3rd member gearing, pull valve covers and check springs/valves between every round/pass

    I'm curious, what's the button on the steering wheel?

    • @hubeerjw
      @hubeerjw  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Eric Pellerin It is a line-lock for the brakes so he can have is foot in on the clutch and the other slamming the throttle to the floor (basically to keep the car from rolling through the beams). He will pre-stage, build up pressure in the brakes, push the line-lock button on the steering wheel, stage the car, and then he will release the clutch and line-lock at the same time to launch. They make it look easy, but there is a ton of things going on all at one time.

  • @josephmonaco4503
    @josephmonaco4503 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is easy. All you do is stage in and pull the lever back and forth 3 times and then pull the shoot. The team does the rest....lol
