  • Hey everyone my name is Masud and in today’s video I’ll be sharing my view on weather a physiotherapist can be called a doctor?
Well to start I’d like to stay that it is very flattering to hear patients calling you doctor when you’re with them.
I remember when I was a physio student doing placements some patients would call you doctor and it was like hmm I like the sound of that!
But I did have to correct them because I wasn’t a doctor.
Having said that though physiotherapists can be called doctors if they have done some form of doctorate degree following their undergrad like in the US for instance, physios are called ‘Doctors’ and have the prefix Dr before their name.
If you haven’t done a doctorate I’m afraid you’re just a physiotherapist haha!
Which is still really amazing so don’t forget that.
    Thanks for watching!

In Egypt physiotherapists can use Dr before their name without DPT or Phd because the faculty of physical therapy in Egypt spend almost 6 years it is very long and difficult

This stems from a general confusion of what "Doctor" means. Technically speaking, a 'doctor' can be anyone who has a PhD/Doctorate degree. So you can call yourself a doctor in any field given you have done a PhD in it. For example, Dr of History, Dr of Finance, Dr of Business and so on.
However, nowadays, people (especially the lay public) tend to use "Doctor" to refer to anyone working in the medical field, regardless of qualifications. So I do agree, physios cannot call themselves Drs unless they have done a PhD in Physio, but to the eyes of the public, you're seen as a Dr regardless.
Ofc, there are some exceptions. Like MBBS degrees are technically a bachelors, but they are legally allowed to call themselves Doctors and use the prefix.

in both UK and US you would a doctor legally in countries following a british system with no doctorate they still can be doctors there by virtue of the custom of treating clinicians as 'doctor' like MBBS is a bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery its an equivalent of MD in US, technically they are bachelors not doctors but still use the title 'Dr' and rightfully so since its more of a custom now.

As someone who knows little to none about Physiotherapy.... I am only just starting to research about this area.
Personally, I assumed all physiotherapists were doctors! Definitely an easy assumption to make ☺️

Hi masud, I have a doubt I am currently in an indian university doing bachelors in physiotherapy. I want to know that can I work in uk football clubs as a physio after doing masters in uk, like after graduation in india coming to uk doing masters and working in uk football clubs. Is there any chance for me to get jobs in English clubs as a physio.

      Hi Enrich,
Sure I don’t see why you can’t make this happen.
First steps are reaching out to clubs and seeing if you can volunteer with them, then you may get a chance to work with the younger teams like U14,U16,U18 .. Men’s 2nd team etc..
So you can build your way up, but it’s a relationship thing so make sure you’re trying to speak to people on LinkedIn and updating your profile with the things you’re doing so you stand out.
This is all once you’ve arrived in the U.K. but you could start networking prior to this through the internet 👍🏼

Hey Masud, love the videos, I can imagine it being pretty bizarre being called a doctor as a physio! I'm currently studying an access to HE (health & physio) and about to apply to study physiotherapy at university so I've found your videos very insightful and helpful - keep up the great work! Ravi

in australia you get the dr since you do a doctor of physio

@@thevanthithevanesan9218 Not true....in Aust...Doctor of Physiotherapy Degrees are Aust Qualification Framework 9...and are technically extended masters. To use Dr in Aust .. a physiotherapist must complete AQF 10 qualification ie PhD or Professional Doctorate such as at La Trobe or Notre Dame. These degrees are underpinned by research, not coursework which is the case for normal DPT in Aust. Undergraduate degrees that can use Dr., can do so because it's allowed as part of their registration eg Medical Doctors MBBS (AQF 7), , Doctor of Medicine (AQF 9) or Mast Chiro (AQF8). This title is not afforded to Physiotherapists without AQF10

so DPT graduates can use Dr. before their names?

Is Clinical Setting to give proper info not misleading to the patients, health professionals should clearly outline their role. Physiotherapist should always say they are a physio , not a medical doctor. Patients can then assume you are a medical doctor and that is not the right practice.
