  • Hi everyone my name is Masud.
    Hope you are well.
In todays video I will attempt to answer what challenges you might face studying physio as someone who is from Islamic culture particularly a lady.
Just off the back of my recent community post, we didn’t get many responses (none actually) I thought it would be good to make a video instead.
I’d like to bring more attention to minority communities within the physio world and hopefully this will empower more students from similar backgrounds to go into the profession.
When I studied we didn’t have any female Muslim students however there were one or two in the years below as I went through the course. I’m not sure if this has improved nowadays within the physio programmes.
I think that when you think of physio it’s quite a taboo profession as it involves a lot of touching and within Islam this is prohibited depending on how strict you practice however i believe if your intention is to help I think that is the most important thing.
Some reasons why you may choose AGAINST studying physio as a Muslim female.
    - Undressing in front of classmates/colleagues
    - Working with members of the opposite sex
    - Handling of limbs during uni and whilst on placement.
Solutions FOR studying physio as a Muslim student:
    - Screens and towels to protect dignity
    - Working with female partners during practicals
    - Wearing gloves during practice // you can’t really escape handling limbs as this is what we do in physio as atleast whilst you’re training to qualify you may have to be slightly hands on.
    - Working with your personal tutor and educators to tailor placements like doing a women’s health speciality for one of them.
As a Muslim physio who wears a hijab there are specialist roles you can work in when you qualify like:
    - Women’s health where you may work with pregnant women pre or post pregnancy.
    - Paediatric care.
    - Elderly care.
Ultimately, I think that you shouldn’t put off studying physio if you are a female Muslim as it can be very rewarding and more fun than something like medicine (which also involves a lot of touching ironically but doesn’t carry the same stigma).

I am a Muslim Hijab who just completed my 4th year in physio degree now am heading towards my internship.
I studied in India and my class was having 6 hijab muslim and 1 practicing muslim man.
At first it was difficult for some of us because of the interaction with opposite gender and dressing style but we got it all figured out Alhamdulillah.
We we're using screen/curtains when a female suppose to expose here body, we are practicing on other female. Sometimes u had to practice on a male bcz you might meet a male patient and treat them but if needed we used to do the minimum required contact and for patient only if there is no male therapist and u avoid unnecessary contacts.
If anyone wants to know more of it you can ask me anything.
Alhamdulillah i was delighted to see this post.
Thanks to you Masud it's so thoughtful of you ! 😊
    Assalam aleykum!

How are you gonna work once you finish your internship or during internship? It's obvious that you have to deal with patients of the opposite gender and being a physio it isn't possible to avoid physical contact.

You do it when necessary and especially when there isnt any male therapist with you, Alhamdulillah maybe people around me used to respect me but i used to only do it when necessary and mostly on elder patients @@mohamedmisfer6316

@@MendelGregor-ks6whhabibty Go for it, I think that the Indian culture and norms is strick and favoring our Islamic ways alot or maybe bcz I was in Rajkot, Gujarat. But I'm assuring you this should not be a problem you will definitely figure it all out. Don't forget to pray and ask Allah for guidance !

Masud great video ! I’ll try add my experience too :
I’m a Muslim hijabi physio. Courses can be accommodating with clothing and hands on techniques. uni can accommodate your needs. But with placements you work with the opposite gender and opposite gender patients. And with the NHS we don’t do massage and tbh it’s optional. But some placements you can see patient undressed.
I work as a peadiatrict physio and it’s great I can avoid all of that. Alhamdulilah x

Habibty, being a physiotherapist you will have to touch them but it is exceptional for the health care giver and other inevitable services but just try to minimise contacts do it when necessary only...

Hi Masud, can you do a video explaining the current state of the NHS from a physio's perspective.
i've seen a lot of videos and posts from doctors and nurses, but not much from physio's.
As a final year student im worried about future job prospects within the nhs
