    I don't think George R R Martin is ever gonna be able to top A Storm Of Swords. That book just had everything in it.

      Mike J Yeah, I know. The thing is that for some reason I'd wish for WoW to be not as neckbreaking as SoS so that A Dream of Spring goes out with a bang. But who knows what George has planned.

    Bend the knee folks, this was the book that made Stannis my favorite character

    • @sedargames8161
      @sedargames8161 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ASOS really explained Stannis far better than DwD. I found it pretty damn dissapointing that he was so angry all the time at the wall. Seems like his SoS personality just went away. His masterplan with the lakes, Night lamp, Umbers , etc. is awesome tho.

    The epilogue with uncle Kevan for me was a huge cliffhanger or maybe more like a game changer, a great chapter either way.
    Also Cersei.

    Spoiler alert (kind of)
    To me, Jon's last chapter was the climax of the book. I remember getting all pumped up for what Jon was about to do then...THAT happened! I was like..."Yeah Jon you go back to Winterfell and kick Ramsy's as...wait...WHAT!? *going back through pages trying to find out where it all went wrong*...NO!"
    And Cersie's last chapter I thought was really cool, like Oooooohhhhhh ddddaaaannnnggggggg.
    Oh and Young Griff's true identity being revealed blew my mind also.

    I just finished A Dance With Dragons, and am considering rereading it alongside A Feast for Crows for continuity's sake, part of me thinks that's how the books are supposed to be read but couldn't be released that way because it would be a massive 2000 paged book

    I like this, but I disagree with what you said about Daenerys being only helped... She works hard on her own. Her followers carry her orders and they are her advisors, so she will listen to then...
    Her marriage to Hizdahr zo Loraq was the best she has done, but Barristan ruined that by attacking Hizdahr and bringing war...

    • @kevinjohnanand

      Daenarys chapters mirror Cersei chapters. They're both incompetent.

    • @justarandomgirlvx3578
      @justarandomgirlvx3578 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kevinjohnanand Daenerys is not incompetent, she just has no idea. Viserys manipulated her for her whole life. She has no idea how to rule, she had no one who she could look up to. Her desire is the house with the red door. She is FIFTEEN. She is basically between puberty and adulthood. She has her needs, some of her actions are lead by her emotions, yes, but you need to remember how she got there and remember her childhood. Remember Viserys. Remember Drogo. Remember her miscarriage. She is for a girl in her situation an incredibly strong character. Not incompetent at all. She knows when she made wrong decisions. She criticises herself and that means she is on the right way to find out who she is and what is right and what is not. You need to experience before you know. Ruling abilities don't come from nothing. And let's not forget that she just has the best intentions. And how she risks her life for her people. She wants them to know that she cares. Dany is not a bad person. Yes, she has hypocritical thoughts. Yes, crucifying the maesters was wrong, but she learns and she knows what to not do again. We need to start seeing Daenerys as who she really is and not just the one side of her who makes stupid decisions and is cruel. That isn't her personality. She is way more complex than that and the Meereen chapters definitely proved that... And a HUGE DIFFERENCE between Cersei and Dany is that Cersei thinks she is always right. That is incompetent. To never question yourself. To not be open to see your mistakes.

    Hmmm what you say about Tyrion is really interesting to me because I am currently in the middle of reading A Storm of Swords and I have watched several interviews with George R.R Martin where he talks about Tyrion being his favorite character. I have wondered if his favoritism/bias would ever be obvious in the books and from what you say it seems so. But I haven't read them, maybe he ends up killing him off in the 5th book, who knows? haha do you agree that no one is safe?

  • @TomMullock
    @TomMullock 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think my favorite p.o.v were Tyrion and Reek. And I really liked that Tyrion was thinking so much about what he did to his father, I think it kind of moved me, haha. I really missed the Starks in this book though, I was dying to know what was happening with Sansa especially. But what do you think of the way the book ended for Jaime, (the whole Brienne thing). I found it very confusing and a bit annoying haha

    I actually read a Feast for Crows the week it was released, after a wait of maybe 3 years or so) and hadn't watched the show. I bought this book eagerly because it was FINALLY an other volume of the series I enjoyed so much when I was still in school. I started reading it and realized: "I HAVE NO IDEA WHO ALL THOSE GUYS ARE AND WHY THEY DO WHAT THEY DO!" 6 or 7 years are a lot of time between books, I wasn't really prepared for that. The good thing is, that it gave me a reason to finally watch the show, and it was a really good adaption I think. And it sufficed as a means to get myself back on track. I read the book, and finally enjoyed it a lot. Though, the second half more than the first half.
    I find it odd you mentioned the Jon and Dany chapters as being... as being kinda important, but totally neglected the Epilogue (Kevan Lannisters chapter). I thought that was when shit really hit the fan (excuse my words ;P ).

    • @getbookish
      @getbookish  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I mentioned Jon and Dany's chapters because those characters have been around since the beginning so people expect them to be touched upon. The epilogues tend to focus on "random" characters so I don't feel as strong of a need to discuss them.

    • @BarHonigfeld
      @BarHonigfeld 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      *****
      True, but although the epilogue was from Kevans point of view I felt it was more about Westeros as a whole and the changes it will bring to the realm. And for me Westeros in itself is a main character... in an odd way :D

    I feel like George RR Martin has definitely decreased the number of chapters the Starks have since A Storm of Swords like Sansa has 3 in Feast and none in Dance, Arya has like 3 in Feast (If I remember correctly) and 2 in Dance, Bran has none in Feast and only 3 in Dance. Jon Snow is the only Stark who has a lot of chapters since he has 13 in Dance but none in Feast.

    Cersei once again took the cake for me. Her chapters were actually the ones I was looking forward to reading the most. They were an absolute thrill to go through 100% of the time.
    Snow was a close second. There was so much interesting stuff going on at the wall what with stannis, the wildlings and Melissandra.
    Tyrion's chapters introduced Penny (which I adore) but other than that I though they were just OK-ish.
    Danaeris I'm not a huge fan of as a character but she had some pretty good moments. I like desperate, cornered Danny way more than I like queen, self-entitled, conceited Danaeris and she had quite a lot of these moments. I generally enjoyed all of the Mereen storylines. I got a good feeling of how impossible a task dealing with that situation must have been for Danny.
    Reek chapters were ok although I'm not a fan in general.
    The chapters that dealt with the two princes Griff and Martel I thought were amongst my least favorite.
    Bran was just a complete drudge to read through. I simply cannot get myself to care for that character no matter how much I try.
    Overall I really enjoyed the book! Looking forward to the next one!

    I felt as though A Dance With Dragons was the weakest in the series. There were a few chapters that felt completely unnecessary, cool, but unnecessary. The splitting of the two books geographically I felt really hurt the narrative. A Feast for Crows at the very least had two perspectives that directly complimented each other and those were Cersei and Brienne; One character rules and fucks up and the other is amongst the smallfolk witnessing the horrors and tragedies that the ego-inflated rulers are causing. Kevan does it for good intentions and reasons considering what's been happening recently but ultimately is screwing the kingdom further for not taking Cersei down when he should have.
    There were also really good philosophies and moral dilemmas in AFFC that were either lacking or underwhelming in ADWD. Daenerys is an incompetent ruler with a good heart but has trouble listening to reason or (like Cersei) doesn't fully grasp the consequences of her actions. This point on the character would have been good if 4 chapters weren't already dedicated to the same issue, atleast with Cersei in AFFC there was a new issue presented in each chapter. I feel as though GRRM was trying to present the two side of the same coin with Cersei and Daenerys, but that doesn't excuse how dragged out Dany's dilemmas were.
    Stannis, Jon Snow, and Davos remain the most interesting threads but the pacing was hurt by the POV of Griff, one chapter perhaps but two was completely unnecessary, and the chapter following Quentyn releasing the dragons, although a really cool chapter and exciting, was also unnecessary (How many Robb Stark chapters did we get that couldn't have been summarized by Catelyn Stark?).
    ADWD was overall a good book but the story was needlessly dragged, and the resurrection of Aegon Targaryen felt weak where ASOIAF usually stands.

    That is correct. However once Ramsay stops playing Reek and sacks and torches Winterfell, he gives someone else that name. It's seen in the 3rd season of the television show and you find out in the 5th book. This person has been a pov character before...

    I literally keep a dictionary with me at all times and look up words I don't know. I will also commonly reread sentences to make sure I understand everything completely, but my god does that make me such a slow reader! I'm still trying to wrap up A Clash Of Kings, but fortunately I should be able to finish reading the series before The Winds Of Winter comes out! I'm guessing it will be released late next year at the earliest, at least let's hope so! =)

    I just want to hear people who read the books opinions on this. Spoilers below
    What do you think of what Varys did. We found out that he is the manipulator of the pawns in the story. Killing Pycell and Keven Lannister. What do you think of that? That was the true cliffhanger in the ADWD.

    • @vDeparture
      @vDeparture 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trafalgar Law I had to take a month long break from reading ADWD after the Quentyn chapter. My mind was fucked as well.

    • @johnnyshinespark
      @johnnyshinespark 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that was crazy cliff hanger. What I think is going on is that Varys wants a Targaryen on the Iron Throne, so he is slowly and secretly dismantling House Lannister cause they have the strongest claim to the throne. When he told Kevan that he's doing for the children, I think he honestly believes that the realm can only truly be at peace under Targaryen rule, and what he meant by "Doing it for the children" was a metaphor for the future. You know kind of like "The children our the future" type deal. But I could be totally wrong.
