  • Ralph McTell (born Ralph May in Farnborough, Kent, England, 3 December 1944 and raised in Croydon) is an English singer-songwriter and acoustic guitar player who has been an influential figure on the UK folk music scene since the 1960s.
Ralph McTell is best known for the song "Streets of London", which has been covered by over two hundred artists around the world
McTell re-recorded "Streets of London" with bassist Rod Clements and backing vocalists Prelude. Released as a single late in 1974, it rocketed up the charts to No. 2 over the Christmas period, became a worldwide million-seller, and won McTell the Ivor Novello Award. - www.ralphmctell.co.uk/ - Courtesy Wikepedia.

This song breaks my heart. I was on the streets for a short time in 2017 with my then boyfriend then we were lucky enough to get a little studio flat in a shared house. It was tiny but it was paradise to us after trying to sleep out in the elements for weeks. This was in summer too, I don't know how people survive winter outside. I've since moved back to my hometown where there's not a big problem with homelessness but I still think of all the people who are living on the streets of Barnsley, South Yorkshire. I make an effort to help every person I see begging now. I don't care what they spend it on. As long as it helps them cope with the situation. I live about ten miles North of Newcastle and there's loads of homeless people there too. We shouldn't have anyone living on the streets in 2022 ffs. It's not just the homeless part that gets me though, it's the lonely old man. It makes me think of my dad. If he was that old man. Oh God I'm gonna cry so I better leave it here. Beautiful song and definitely gonna be one of the first songs I attempt to play when I finally learn to play like this, picking through chords. I'm probably a good two years away from even thinking about it though

In 1975 I worked as a signal's technician at London Underground when word got around that there was a very talented guitar player singing in the underground walkways . We would then go and listen to him..he was very good. Later this song was released, and the rest is history. Many thanks Ralf

      2020 Coronavirus updated verse
In March 2020, Ralph McTell agreed to write another verse to the song, inspired by the Coronavirus pandemic gripping the world at the time. The new verse is as follows:
In shop doorways, under bridges, in all our towns and cities
You can glimpse the makeshift bedding from the corner of your eye
Remember what you're seeing barely hides a human being
We're all in this together, brother, sister, you and I.[1

@@leewalker662 LMFAO tell us what you really think pal 😅 seriously though, An Anthem for the Lonely and Homeless doesn't quite have the same ring to it as The Streets of London does it? Obviously it IS one but the title shouldn't be a description of the song.

The first song I learned to pick on the guitar. I as aged 7, and Dad wouldn't teach me to play Streets, because it would be too hard for me at my age. I taught myself instead. When he heard me play it, he gave me his guitar. I still have it, 42 years later.

Ralph McTell songs are like little stories.
Here he takes us on a tour of a city, focusing our minds on the lost and lonely.
The guitar ripples capture beautifully the fragments and impressions of a less than gentle life.

Sadness is unavoidable in our lives. But to wallow in self pity is unhealthy, often somewhat dishonest, and often driven by regrets and guilt. It clouds our eyes, closes our minds to our neighbor's plight, gets in the way of making our world just a little warmer and better. So be sad but don't exaggerate. Be honest about what drives it, and, if necessary, ask for forgiveness to begin healing and rejoining the good and necessary work of helping those in need.

I first heard this song when i was a child in the 70s. I had no clue what it meant but after having experienced familial rejection and losing everything and being homeless for six months in 2020. I was lucky because my best friend stood by me and made sure that i could sleep on her sofa until i was finally rehoused. As a transgender woman, i wouldn't have survived a day on the streets. I am still struggling but not dead yet.
Apparently the market referred to in the first verse is Surrey Street Market in Croydon, where i used to go with my Mum.
I heard it played in a Dublin pub yesterday and immediately burst into tears. thank you Ralph McTell for caring about the unloved and the unwanted.

Sorry to dispell your dilusional thinking but you are not a woman . Thinking that you are doesn't help you , and other people supporting your claim that you are a woman are no friends of yours . They are miss-guided liars who have been reduced to fantasy by marxist extreme left wing propagander and lies . For instance , what is your chromosome mix as regards x and y and were you born with a prostate ? You were born a biological man and you still are a biological man . Maybe it is your way of coping with the fact that you are homosexual - just as I am . And maybe , due to your upbringing and " tabbo's " around homosexuality when you were growing up ,you found it far easier to convince yourself that you are a woman and thus it wouldn't be homosexuality you had but femininity because you are a " woman " ? That is obviously pure speculation on my part because you really are only fooling yourself when you think and say that you are a woman . You are not , and as i have just proved , you are a man who likes / loves men .

This song was already a hit in my home country the Netherlands in 1972, in the UK where it’s made in 1975, bit strange.

He wrote it in 1969 I believe but he may have rerecorded it in 1975.

A song and voice for the ages.... regretfully but strangely at the same time i proudly (I don't want to desecrate this absolute classic but merely pay homage and pretend I'm even nearly as talented as the great man) I belt this tune out whenever theres a late nighter and an opportunity.....

I know! I thought "WTF" They are dancing to this song? Maybe the shows producers told them to, which would prove how ignorant the producers were. McTell is a pro - he maintained his composure throughout.

Have you seen the old man
    In the closed-down market
    Kicking up the paper
    With his worn out shoes?
In his eyes you see no pride
Arms held loosely at his side
    Yesterday's paper telling yesterday's news
So how can you tell me you're lonely
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand and
Lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind
Have you seen the old girl
Who walks the streets of London
Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags?
    She's no time for talking
She just keeps right on walking
Carrying her home in two carrier bags
So how can you tell me you're lonely
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand and
Lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind
    In the all night cafe
    At a quarter past eleven
Same old man sitting there on his own
    Looking at the world
Over the rim of his teacup
    Each tea lasts an hour
    And he wanders home alone
So how can you tell me you're lonely
Don't say for you that the sun don't shine
Let me take you by the hand and
Lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind
Have you seen the old man
    Outside the Seaman's Mission
Memory fading with the medal ribbons that he wears
    In our winter city
The rain cries a little pity
    For one more forgotten hero
And a world that doesn't care
So how can you tell me you're lonely
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand and
Lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind

Wonderful, singer, song-writer and guitarist. Saw him perform live a couple of times in the 1970s. The streets of London are very different to when this song was written. He gets a weird and pretty insulting introduction here.
