I decided I didn't trust all the plastic components of the Bosch, and replaced our old Kitchenaid with a new more powerful Kitchenaid. Boy, am I ever sorry I did that. The new Kitchenaid is a piece of junk compared to our old one. The new components are lesser quality and fit poorly. Even though it is higher wattage, it is less powerful. It does not maintain a constant speed. When trying to start on low, it takes off fast, throwing batter everywhere, then quicky bogs down and overheats as the dough thickens. It's not half the mixer our old Kitchenaid was. So sorry we wasted the money we budgeted for a new mixer.

I have owned Bosch mixers for almost 40 years. My first one still works. Best mixer on the market as far as I am concerned. I am also a cake decorator, but I make a lot of bread. The motor on this machine is amazing, even with 100% whole wheat it handles it beautifully. I also use it to make homemade fondant for my cakes and it never struggles. I can’t say the same for Kitchen Aid machines.

Join our mixer-owners' list: groups.io/g/Mixer-Owners ! Lots of BU/BUP owners and most members bake bread. And congrats on your BUP--it's a superb mixer. May I recommend its "tiny tank" sibling for those whose needs don't require the BUP? Check out the Bosch Compact. It was my first upgrade from my little Sunbeam hand-mixer. I was looking into a KA nine or so years ago but joined the aforementioned group; the knowledgeable members steered me to a Compact instead and I've since bought several for family and friends.

My Bosch Magic Mixer is over 43 yrs. old. I bought it new with many attachments. I have loaded with double batches of heavy nutty chocolate chip cookie dough and it's a work horse & I have never had any problems with it. Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a fancy new machine, but why replace something that isn't broke.
I like things that are made right and last. IMO too many junky made things ending up in our over filled dumps.

I have owned a Bosch Universal Plus for almost 2 years and I wish I got it a long time ago. For more than 20 years I used Kitchen Aid mixer. I gave my kitchen aid pro to my mom. I use my Bosch for making bread and pizza dough and my wife uses for muffins and cakes. To test new bread recipes, I scale down to 454g and use dough hook with dough hook extender. This makes doing small batch very easy. I like how quickly I can whip egg whites. Because of my background I weigh everything when I make bread and pizza dough.

I just bought one and used your affiliated link! You're awesome! Love your personality and your knowledge! I'm currently a baking and pastry arts student and have loved watching all your videos! I just made my first three tier wedding cake recently and it turned out amazing! The day before the wedding, when I was about to make my buttercream to fill, crumb coat, and frost my cake, my KitchenAid that has been with me for 12 years stopped working!!! Go figure right? I was able to dabble with it and make it go again just so that i can make enough buttercream! I'm receiving my Bosch this Friday and my KitchenAid is in the shop right now getting fixed. I'm still keeping my KitchenAid as to make small batches and such. But thank you for your amazing review! I'll always be your supporter! ❤️

The attachments are made out of plastic so that they will break instead of destroying the drive motor. This is a smart design choice and this is why it is important to know which drive to use with which paddle.

Please think twice, and then twice again, before sinking money into a KA. The BUP is an excellent choice; you might also want to look at the Ankarsrum (smaller footprint, same capacity, some colors are on sale now and there's a sale on all colors throughout December). There are MUCH sturdier, more versatile choices than the KA.

One point that seems that it was intentionally left out was that the kitchen aid head can be lifted up allowing for direct access to the bowl. The bowl is only blocked when the head is down and mixing.
Also very important is that with the kitchen aid you could lift the head out, remove the bowl and access all the contents of the bowl whereas the bosch the center stays in the middle making it difficult to get all the contents out of the bowl.

I always loved my Kitchenaid mixer which I bought in 1988. I bought a new larger one 6 yrs ago. After replacing parts on the new one twice and having it fail again I called Kitchenaid and they told me it was my fault because I made my bread dough at setting 2 and not setting 1. Really?
I now own a Bosch and can do much larger bread and biscotti loads and it is so much more powerful. I believe Bosch is the superior mixer no contest.

You forgot to mention that the slowing down means the unit actually is using a different gear-ratio. One day my baking reach exceeded my hand mixer's grasp and I knew it was time to invest in a stand mixer. I'd wanted a KA for most of my adult life but have read in the past few years that they don't last like they used to. I read more and more about what a workhorse the Bosch is and I wrestled with the decision for a while before finally choosing the Bosch. I was lucky to find a good used one and it's been love ever since. It does take a little getting used to but I know it's going to work for me for a long time.

I have a 6 qt Kitchen Aid, lots of attachments like the meat grinder, pasta sheeter, juicer etc. I found one of these Bosch mixers with all the attachments at my Goodwill. It was $99 but on half price day so I paid $50 for it. WOW! I bought it to sell but I used it today to make sure it worked and it’s so good! Still not decided but one thing that may make me sell it the cost of the accessories. Just the new stainless steel bowl is around $150. Most of the accessories are about that price (blender, food processor etc). It’s so good, though! One think about the bigger Kitchen Aid is that it doesn’t do smaller batches very well. With this you can whip just one egg white! So good! No scraping! So powerful! Ugggg, I think I’m going to have to keep it. Now, to tell my husband 😱

They're not that flimsy when you hold them. I've had mine for 11 years and the only one I replaced was the dough hook (which is metal) cause I threw it in the dishwasher and it's not diswasher safe. The new lEquip one is, and includes the dough hook extender, so I recommend getting that if you're lazy about hand washing.

I've had my Bosch Universal (previous model) for about 20 years now and it's been flawless kneading 8 cups of bread dough once or twice a week. You will find that it doesn't knead 4 cups of flour or less very well as the dough tends to just move around the bowl because there isn't enough to catch on the hooks, so stick with 6 or more cups. I see you have the plastic hub for your whisks, mine came with a metal hub and that may be still available. There has always been a stainless dough bowl available, but it is strictly for dough as the hooks are built into the base. The other nice thing about the Bosch is that it weighs barely 11 pounds which means most people can easily lift it up and put it away if counter space is at a premium. Not quite as easy to do with conventional planetary mixers.

I had a second hand kitchenaid and it was great. not good for dough but then you don't know what you're doing if you're using a KA for dough [IMO] unless its one of the top line models. Bosch seems to have borrowed a bit from Ankarsrum but not exactly resulting in a much sturdier power train power transfer mechanism. KA still looks beautiful in a kitchen and really good for cake/egg whites/turning chicken into strips quickly etc. I can get the Bosch direct from Germany right now for £256 inc delivery. its usually double that!

The open top is about the only pro for me because I have to agree, stopping to lift the beater on the Kitchenaid to add certain ingredients is a pain. The average homemaker however, in my own opinion as one who bakes a lot is easily satisfied with the Kitchenaid mixer. Nice mixer though if one can afford it and bakes as you do. Thanks for the comparisons.

With all the attachments clicking into each other it looks like a lot of batter can get trapped between. The video didnt really show much of how you got the batter out. And with all the attachments it looks kind of hard to clean everything. Do you mind sharing your opinions on those aspects ?

I've had the Bosch for about 6 years. It's handy for larger batches of cookies, muffins, or for cake. It is lousy for bread doughs. It just doesn't have the correct kneading action necessary to develop the gluten properly. It tears instead of kneads. I bake 100-120 loaves of bread per week as a cottage micro baker. I use the Bosch for bar cookies. For bread, I have two Verimixer Teddy machines (and a 30qt Verimixer). The Teddy is excellent but costs 2.5 times the Bosch when new. Try Ebay.

I've been baking bread once or twice a week with my Bosch Universal and it kneads dough beautifully, no tearing. You must be doing something wrong.

  • @steveskouson9620

Amy, perhaps a step backward might do you good.
Skip the universal plus, and try the old Universal.
It only has (and needs) two speeds. The 15 pound
Stainless Steel bowl comes with it. My mother got
hers, in the early '70's, and tried to destroy it. (I'm the
second of 7 kids.) 2 LARGE batches of whole wheat
bread a week. (We also git the Magic Mill, with the
Bosch.) Along side of cookies and Cinnamon Rolls.
I found an old Universal, with the SS bowl, at the local
Deseret Industries. They charged me the OUTRAGEOUS
    amount of SIX WHOLE dollars!

I’d be interested if I didn’t already own a Kenwood, which I’ve had for close to 30 years. Best by far over any Kitchen Aid and as strong as this, wattage wise. If I remember, mines a 700 watt, so a tad short of this one.

The cake batter paddles and the cookie paddles should only be used with the metal attachment holder, not the plastic one. Now the paddles come in a kit with the metal paddle/attachment holder or you can buy just the paddles. When I first got my Bosch 10 years ago, I broke my whisks trying to make a double batch of chocolate chip cookies. (Should have switched to either cookie paddles or the dough hook after creaming the butter & sugar.) Pleasant Hill Grain sent me the replacement parts free and sent the metal paddle/attachment holder instead of the plastic one. I never use the plastic one anymore. I make 5 loaves of bread at the time about every 2 weeks with my Bosch and it handles that amount easily. Yes, it was a little pricier to buy, but you should be able to hand this down to your kids because it will still be going strong! By the way, you can buy 2 versions of the stainless steel bowl for the Universal Plus model separately. Saving for mine now😊. Love this mixer!

I'm so happy you shared this! I have this mixer on my wish list now. I did have a couple questions though and you've answered 90% on this video. I only have one question left. When making something like Swiss meringue buttercream that starts hot and has to cool off, how does that do with the plastic bowl. The stand mixer I have now has a metal bowl on a plastic base and it takes ages to cool to room temperature to the point that I now let the mixture cool before trying to beat it. Have you tried anything similar?
I mentioned it on Instagram, but this mixer costs half as much as the Kitchaid Artisan in Germany, so it sounds like my best option for my next stand mixer.

    • @SugarGeekShow
      @SugarGeekShow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2
