Love Tom T. Hall he had a way of putting life into words like no one else.
This song hits on so many levels. Generational differences, time and distance, not knowing what to say, perspective, guilt and also a longing for something or someone he left behind. He couldn’t come to moms funeral, now he’s home, but then gone again, just that quick. It speaks volumes
He had such an easy conversational way of telling a story. I am a werd nerd too!
Tom t Hall songs bring out so many good emotions his songs are like mini movies one song they should really listen to is Grandma whistles I think that you will really love it❤❤❤️🤠👍
Don, I saw Tom T in Nashville years ago. Margaret T is correct, it's the only Tom T Hall song the title was not included in the lyrics. When I saw him in Nashville it was a very small venue, like preforming in the round, basically he would sing the song, and we the audience would ask questions. Some other fun facts, Tom T always used names and people in his songs, such Clanton Delaney. That was a mix of two friends of his. In this song "Carterville" refers to the Carter family. Tom T and Johnny Cash with the Carters were very close. When he sang the Homecoming he explained the true meaning of the song. First if you did not catch it, its a one way conversation, his father never gets to ask a question. He's trying to explain why he never shows up. The singers career was more important to him than his family. Had that I'm to busy to care. Even his line "I'm glad Fred and Jan are here, its better then you being here alone." expresses, the singer would not even be around if his father needed him. It's a very deep and sad song. Like you said, Tom T has the magical way of putting words together that moves your felling's all over the song.
Tom T. Hall said in a interview with Bill Anderson. On the show Bill Anderson had XM satellite radio "Bill Anderson visits with the legends". Tom T Hall said almost every song he written happened in real life to him or happen to someone he met. And he said this song "Homecoming" actually did happen to him. As well as "salute to a switchblade" happened to him when he was in the Army stationed in West Germany.
Thanks for doing this song, Don. I grew up on a small farm and my brothers and I worked our asses off helping it go. My dad was a very hard man and had good reasons for being the way he was but it caused us to be mostly estranged throughout my adult years. When I did visit, it was always painful and strained. And now he is gone. So is my mom. And I miss them terribly. This song always reminded me of them and how it felt to drive up their driveway when visiting. I miss them and that old farm so so so much.

Hi! Last week, I watched and listened to a live in studio version of this song with Tom T. Hall. He mentioned the word "homecoming" is no where in the lyrics. Thank you. I just love TTH
that is one of my favorities of his. A fan for many years, saw him at a State fair in 1986l
Wow.... That song struck me, and had my mind wandering through the story in it. Rather like a man whose rerlationship with his son was not the very best and when son visits it comes on like that. Something I know all too well.
Sometimes I fall into overthinking a Tom T song, looking for the words written between the lines like what is the Dad thinking? What is the son really trying to say to his dad? Then I just sort of close my eyes and shut off my brain and just listen and enjoy a very good simple song.
It's good he found the time to drop in for 5 minutes. If he'd known Dad had a phone, he could have called and avoided the trip altogether.

There is so much irony, hyperbole, and sweet sarcasm in Country Music. There is all of that here, but there is a sadness too that we all experienced homecoming as young adults once or parents now. Love the song. Good video reaction.

Do 'Thank You Connersville' it is a masterpiece of flowing linear storytelling set to a melody.

Tom's nickname is "The Story Teller," and so appropriate. This song tells it all about life on the road for some. The only part that confuses me a bit is whether he really did spend time in jail or just looks wasted.
I think it means that he had been traveling and playing so much it made him look and feel that way
Love this song. The last line gets me. To me it's the purpose of his visit. I assume Barbara Walker is an old flame and he's still pining and was hoping to see her.
