I've been listening to Tom T. Hall music since around 1967 or so. Took him for granted and thought he would be around forever. Thank God for youtube and videos like this one.
I grew up hearing Tom T. Hall in my dad's shop when I was a kid in the 70s and loved his music. I spent 21 years in the military and this song reminds me of my visits with my dad when I come home to NC on leave. I miss my dad and The Ol' Storyteller a bunch.
This song made me cry the first time I heard it, and several times after. I think because it illustrates the distance that inevitably comes between us and the people we love. I may not be a musician like the character in the song, but being busy and growing up drove me away from my grandparents; the people who raised me.
It made me cry the first time I heard it, too. And sometimes it still does. I remember where I was and who I was with when I first heard it. It had a profound effect on me.
@@RemingtonRidersMusic that's the great thing about music, the way a song binds to a memory. When you can remember the exact time and place you were when you first heard it and what was going on in your life at that time. It's pretty incredible.
dont always blame yourself, sometimes we have to do things for ourselves or our family that hurts but we have to make choices, its life, tom wrote about and understood this.Be happy but remember
This is a really good post/comment. Listening to this song always takes me down a path similar to what you describe. My Dad was a farmer, and he was not at all into this type of music, but I think the lyrics of this song would have really touched him. I was too busy with my life to talk to my Dad much of the time. A bad fall helped contribute to later dementia, and missed opportunities are not always afforded to us to be corrected.
This is my favorite TTH song. It's so simple and so deep at the same time... totally paints a picture of a lifestyle. Rest in peace, Mr. Hall, you will be missed.
Makes me think of going to visit my wife’s grandparents in a tiny Missouri town. They’re gone now but there were no finer people. They gave us some beautiful memories. Simple. But beautiful.
This song hits no matter what age. I’m 26 but this made me think about the ones I love/loved, and how easy it is to lose touch with them because “life happens”. Even though it’s a terribly sad song, I appreciate the hell out of it for making me think critically about how I should cherish the one’s I still have around
LOST MY DAD LAST YEAR AND THIS SONG REALLY HITS HOME SINCE HE WAS A FARMER. FUNNY I NEVER HEARD THIS SONG TIL HE PASSED BUT IT HAS BECOME MY FAVORITE, THANKS FOR SHARING GOOD MUSIC!
@GN i dont know if this means anything to you but i think its a sign from your Dad. i found tom t hall when my grandpa passed away and from what i was told tom t hall was his favorite
To me this is one of the greatest country songs ever......he is a master of story telling.......just goes to show that you don't need a 40 piece band and all the bells and whistles to make a great song.....simple is always best.....just my humble thoughts....
Tom T was my brother's favorite singer and this was his favorite song. I sat at the hospital with him when he had cancer. I asked which Tom T song he liked the best, he said I guess it would have to be the homecoming. I said sing it for me m he was a good singer, He sung it ,every word. He died a few weeks later at age 55.
That's my Grandma at the end of the song when he says if you see Barbara Walker tell I said hello. She used to work at the western club on Cedar Creek Lake. She's 80+ now.
It's the 24th of August, and it's just another night here in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I saw an article on the BBC that Charlie Watts, of the Rolling Stones, died. I clicked on the article and I saw where it mentioned that we lost two great musicians in one week. Curious, I looked to see who the other one was - it was Tom. I immediately thought of my youth and the small town were I was raised in Arkansas. I remembered my father playing Tom T. Hall songs on his acoustic guitar. He would sing the following songs over and over again: "That's How I Got To Memphis", "Homecoming", "I Miss A Lot Of Trains", & "Margie's At Lincoln Park Inn." I have lived in Argentina for many years now, and I'm sure I'll put my foot in the grave here - but until I do, I will always think back to those days in Berrvyille, Arkansas, sitting on a chair by my father's side, listening to him belt out one of Tom's songs. I'll miss him (and my father) each time I hear one of Tom's songs.
My dad is 75 years old. He often thinks of old songs and every week or two when I drive out to see him and my mother he'll ask me " oh..can you bring this sing up on your phone?" Well the other day he asked for this song. I'd heard mant of TTH's songs over the decades and bought several of them. Wow, this song is just incredible. I thought "Clayton Delaney" as his best song...until I played this one for him. Tom T. Hall is indeed "The" story teller!
I can close my eyes and hear my daddy singing this song. He was no Tom T. Hall but he was pretty damn good. He had a 1952 J45 that he bought in the summer of 53 for 5 bucks... Long story. Anyway, I have the old guitar now and I can play it, but not like the old man could.
My dad introduced me to "Tom T" about 1975, when I was 10 years old. He's my favorite country music artist. There'll never be another one like the "Storyteller." The first album I ever purchased, at age 10, was "In Search of a Song." I only wish I had seen this legend perform live....just once. I lost dad in 2005, but I can still hear him singing Tom T. Hall in my mind.
I have always liked Tom T Hall since the 1970's, but the older I get the more I appreciate his talent . His lyrics are always so simple yet descriptive and every song seems to tell a story that I lived in my life. What a treasure he is and so down to earth and ordinary, could be anyone of the thousands of men I have passed by somewhere in my life. Thanks lincolncadillac for putting this up and thanks to Tom for being who you are and sharing your talent with us! People like Tom are so rare in our lifetimes. Please excuse the edit but I, temporarily, have done a huge injustice to Mr. Hall by not mentioning he is the "Best Story Teller in the world". A worthy title and fact that should never be excluded from any description of this great and multi-talented musician. Also at this point (as long as I am dribbling on), I would also like to state, that Mr. Hall appears at the top of the list, on my all-time, "top 10 list of people I wished I had for neighbors," just above Bob Newhart. I'm not sure why, just thought that trivial bit of information may come in handy somehow, someday, lol.
Anyone else here because of his passing away today? This song here was the first song I heard of Tom's....When I was 15 years old I went to live with my dad, after not seeing him since I was 6 years old when my parents split...It was in 2001, and I got my first computer, well I downloaded Napster and showed my dad how to get free music... This was the first song he had me download.. It always stuck with me...
I choke up every time I hear this. Reminds me so much of the conversations I had with my dad after my mom died. I had moved away and was able to see him once every five or six weeks. He just didn’t understand.
You can picture the story unfolding in your mind as it goes along. Like the many great songs of the era Phantom 309 is another example of a story I can see happening to a lone hitchhiker on a cold rainy night.
Toms mother and fathers grave are about 100’ from my fathers and they are right behind my grandparents I can see there headstone from my back door! In olive hill my toms hometown and also mine!
I left home when I was 15 years of age. It was a strange time, my father and I were never particularly close. But in 1979 when I first heard this song, everything seemed to be all right.

This and the hitchhiker are two of my favorite Tom T songs. I’m a way this one reminds me of my days in the Marine Corps. Not talking or seeing my old man to much but maybe once a year for many years. Being away and people passing away and not able to come. But just a great great song
It makes me sad and think at the same time I've driven away from my parents so much and I can't imagine a life without my dad he made me love classic cars and classic music love you guys

Great tune.......... Tom has a lot of great tunes........... been a fan of his since the beginning, saw him perform in person a couple of times in Toronto over the years.
They don't have songs like this anymore.
I'm 67 now ,I still have the memories of my father and coming home to this song.God bless the story teller, thank you

Especially since so many of his LP's haven't been reissued as CD's yet...
One of the greatest songs ever...BY someone who could have a pretty accurate claim on being the greatest country singer ever.
It’s a done deal he is the greatest
Pro trick: watch series on Flixzone. Been using them for watching lots of of movies during the lockdown.
@Ariel Chris Yea, have been using Flixzone for years myself =)
Songwriter yes. But singer has to be GJ.

Too hard to pick a Tom T. favorite song. Too many songs. But this one is absolutely on the list.
Today it is my favoright. But I have a lust for watermelon wine
One of the all-time great songwriters. You are missed, Tom T. RIP.

RIP to one of the finest chroniclers of the American experience, a true poet

I didn't learn until recently about the next to last line. My maiden name is Barbara Walker.
Hi Barbara. Tom says hello.
A great Country Singer that tells a story of respect and love. Sorely missed. RIP Tommie. You will never be forgotten.
RIP Tom T Hall. The music world will miss you.

So sorry to hear about your brother passing, I lost my brother at 57, he died from the use of drugs unfortunately. We both use to love country music.

I'm sorry for your loss.

When I hear it, my mind replaces her with the name of the girl I grew up next door to.
Loved everything Tom T did. But this may be my favorite.

A hit song without a chorus? Just shows how great a story/song it is
