Wheat Harvest: Detroit Diesel Edition

  • It's day 4 of wheat harvest, so I swapped tractors again. Today the wagons are pulled by my Oliver 1950, also known as Herman, and the auger is powered by my Oliver 1900 A series. Both tractors have the Detroit Diesel 4-53 engine. The combine is my Massey Ferguson 8570.

    Good to see these half century old machines still working their heart out. A testament to the longevity built into the older tractors.those Detroit’s sound like they could rattle your teeth right out of your mouth though.I heard noise was a big complaint with the Duetz tractors when first sold in the US. Could be wrong but I think the Detroit has the Duetz beat hands down.great looking collection.thanks

      John Johnson..... but the trucks had Series 71 in most of them, some of the class 7's did have 6 & 8V53's. The only "trucks" to utilize the little 4-53's were some of P&D (Pickup & Delivery) type "vans".... ie: Hostess Cup Cake had hundreds of them around the country for delivering to local stores back in the mid 1960's through the mid to late 1980's... they also had them up in Canada as well. GMC/Chevy did offer the 4-53 as an option in their 5 ton trucks of the 1960's and 70's.

    long live the GM 2 stroke diesel ,,i love them ,,i own 2 machines which were repowered with 2 stroke diesels and i have a huge collection of detroit engines ,, i began collecting Detroit 2 stroke diesels in 1996 shortly after GM stopped producing them
    i have a couple rare ones too ,,only one engine is truly missing from my collection and that's the elusive 1-71 ,
    ,3-53 /453 ,453 turbo ,6V-53 ,both NA and turbo /aftercooled ,12V-53 with 4 turbos ,, only one of less than 50 built ,,
    2-71 /4-71 turbo 6-71 NA and turbo 6v/8v and 12V71 ,have several marine engines , left and right rotating,,missing a 20V-71
    have several 6V-92 and 8V92 truck engines and a 12V-92 stationary engine generator,,
    the biggest of them all is a Gigantic 12V-149 which i use as a yard ornament it does run and has 4 huge turbos on it
    and i love starting it just to annoy my neighbors
    eventually i hope to open an engine museum because i love old engines i have many more engines other than detroits , including several airplane engines ,V12 truck engines including a GMC 702 V12 ,,also have a Deutz air cooled V12 from germany

      it has gotten to an impressive size yes i am as time and money permits restoring them to operating condition
      also learning about them in the process , i watch a lot of detroit diesel repair videos as well to learn more
      my favorite engine of them all is the little 12V-53T,,it sounds much different than a 12V71
      for the first time this year i was able to have an engine display at my county fair ,,turned a lot of heads too ,,nobody in my area had any idea what i was doing ,,the highlight of it was seeing 6 different V12 engines all running at the same time ,,wish i had a video of it , i never even thought about it till it was over
      the odd duck Deutz V12 air cooled ,, GMC 702 , 3 different Detroits 12V53 , 12V71 and 12V92 ,,and on the very end of my trailer mounted on a stand with a sign on both sides that reads , the worlds largest portable fan ,,a very much original WW2 vintage Allison V1710-1 Airplane engine complete with a 11ft propeller
      i am a completely self taught mechanic that started repairing lawnmowers at the age of 10 clear back in 1984

    • @Alwis-Haph-Rytte
      @Alwis-Haph-Rytte 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThatOliverGuyChris Where the farmers don't own combines and they grow wheat under contract. They have to have the wheat ready for when the combine fleets move through. So the flour, cereal, etc type companies tell them when to spray so that the field will be dead/dry when the combines come through. It's usually about 10 days before scheduled harvest date. I don't mind roundup to kill before planting, but don't put it on our food. I use to live on a dairy farm and some would add meat scraps to the ground grain feed to raise protein. I felt that was crazy and used soy or cotton seed meal. Guess where Mad Cow comes from? Infected meat scraps. So killing seed with herbicide is messed up IMHO.
      I miss farming, but I like the old ways mixed with new. Having a combine is important because you can harvest your own seed for planting and still use Hybrids too. Grain farming needs hybrids for yield. But when you have livestock, open pollinated is a great nutrient rich seed stock to have. Clover is a great 2 year hay crop and adds nitrogen to the soil, that seed can be a bit steep. But having 5 acres of seed stock like clover, oats, tall wheat will give seed for quick forage hay when you run short. I see guys planting Sudan Sorghum hybrids for hay but the stalks are to big and long for the livestock to feed good without chopping, and prussic acid issues. But with non-hybrid Sudan grass, it's not much of an issue and smaller stalks that are more easily eaten by livestock. With a combine you can grow your own seed. We seen years when money was real tight, but we had seed in the bins and our cattle never went hungry. We still planted hybrids, but we had backup. There's also a nice niche for open pollinated seed too.

    My son found an oliver 1900 front wheel assist a few years ago and the owner wanted 3000 for it. He said it had no oil pressure but it still ran. could have just had a bad gauge not sure. My son didnt buy it because the only way he had to haul it was on a 14,000 trailer behind a duramax. He thought it was too heavy for that. Yesterday he saw one sell on an online auction and the last I saw it was bringing 28,000. He kicks himself for not buying the one for 3000.

      Yep, 3 grand was a good deal. He probably would have been ok, a FWA 1900 is around 12,000 pounds unless there are a bunch of added weights and fluid.

    I was just watching cool stuff on TH-cam when I came across Herman. I can tell you most of the history on the big boy. I sat between the fenders of him for many hours. Herman did come from Nebraska but not from a farmer, it came from JH Minor Ranch Company from the deep wet meadows of the Sandhills. The reason it came with those tires was we stacked hay on the wet meadows and moved hay off of them. By the way where is the Waldon dozer that used to be on it? Awesome videos! Thanks for letting me see an old friend!
    PS. I have seen it stuck in the mud!

      Cool! I was wondering if someone would ever see these videos that knew Herman in his original home. I'd love to hear any history on him you might know. A friend of mine was the second owner, he took off the Waldon blade and sold it, and also removed the hay grapple setup that was on the back. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I could not handle the noise of a Detroit 2-Stroke all day long in the field. Would drive me batshit crazy. LOL. On those DD 2-Strokes, do you have to mix the oil in the fuel like you do on a 2-stroke engine for lawn equipment, or is their lubrication system like a 4-cycle engine?

    • @horseblinderson4747
      @horseblinderson4747 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's like a four stroke. The oil isn't what makes it a two stroke it's the engine cycle.

    • @horseblinderson4747
      @horseblinderson4747 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those smaller gas engines breathe through the lower end and they don't have valves, they have reeds to keep them from back breathing so mixed oil is all they need.

      Ditto on what Michael Rhoads said. A small 2 stroke uses the crankcase pressure changes from the piston moving in and out to force the fuel mixture into the combustion chamber at the bottom of the power stroke. A Detroit Diesel uses a blower to create pressure in the intake to force clean air in and exhaust out at the bottom of the power stroke.

    Have you ever put tires on Herman? Or done anything to the engine?

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did have 1 rear tire go flat from spinning the bead, got that remounted on my own. I've done some pricing, and it would be around 10 grand to replace them. Only thing I have done to the engine is replaced a leaky valve cover gasket. I adjusted the valves and injector height while I was in there. Now I need to learn how to adjust the rack and set the max rpms.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main thing is they reduce soil compaction by spreading the weight of the tractor over a larger area. They also provide more stability in hilly terrain.

    I wanna know the story of Herman, and why he's Herman, because I love that name for something that big. It's like me naming a Mahindra 5500 Stumpy (which I did, due to a size misconception, the thing is about the size of a mobile home)

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Herman was bought new by a farmer in the sand hills of Nebraska. He made hay in some of the low lands and wanted the flotation. In 1966 when he was new, the Munsters were popular on TV, and the neighbors told the farmer that his tractor was big like Herman Munster. The name stuck. A friend of mine bought Herman from the original owner, and then I bought him from my friend. The name has stayed with him all this time.
