Great video with lots of info! Intrigued with your comments on the selection of scions as I have a grafted Maher that’s branches have a drooping or downward growth habit as well as a Palmer mango with similar growth habits. Contemplating replacing them as they just aren’t growing upwards enough.
Hi. Maher definitely has that tendency. I believe black sapote is a tree that suffers from the phenomenon, where the scionwood comes from on the tree seems to matter. Don’t replace them just yet though! The way to combat it (and I am doing it with my Maher) is to stake the trees to the desired height. I use three stakes in a triangle pattern out from the trunk. You have to leave them staked until the trunk really thickens (at least a year). Palmer is a naturally droopy mango but same deal. Hope you can sort your trees :) If it’s a bit confusing I have a planting video where I show exactly that with a black sapote tree - m.th-cam.com/video/gA19LHTk0cA/w-d-xo.html
Wonderful video, very informative!! I recently bought a seedling from Exotica Tropical Fruit Nursery in Vista, CA... This information should be helpful. Thank you!
