    I’m sharing a little insight to how simple melody comes alive with assigning a chord or bass note to melody. Try to really focus on listening here. Think about what’s really happening inside the chords and try to hear it above all. Enjoy!

    Hey Guthrie. I just recently subscribed to your channel. I come from what I am sure, is a long list of players who bought an acoustic guitar and a few song books 40 years ago and fell in love with music. Then life took over and we spent 40 years noodling over the same chords without any real direction. I truly appreciate your content and your approach to teaching. You have no idea how much you are helping me weave together 40 years worth of ideas I had bouncing around in my head. I hope to get down to Nashville to check you out sometime. Merry Christmas!

      I had the joy of playing with a piano player years ago that could play anything in any key, when I asked how in the world he learned all of this, he said he took a simple song and learned it in every key. Then he went to the next song, etc. By the time he got to about the fifth song or so (which took a number of months), he could play virtually anything in any key. So your insight to Amazing Grace is spot on. And to be honest, I think guitar players have it a little easier than piano players when it comes to transposing. Still, it takes a lot of work no matter the instrument. But Guthrie does make it really tangible. O to have an additional 10 hours a day!! Thanks for the share, Casey! 🙏

    Hey Guthrie, you seem to be playing single note melodies and placing appropriate chords “underneath”. How do you determine the chord that goes with each note in the overall melody? Thanks for the videos and help!

    • @onethousandtwonortheast8848
      @onethousandtwonortheast8848 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If I may, but in here, and please correct me, if I’m wrong, Guthrie, he is selecting cords based on thirds. So, for example, in the key of C; C, e.g., then, DFA, e.g. B, FAC, GBD, a CE, BDF,

    • @cw5365
      @cw5365 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@onethousandtwonortheast8848 Hi, could you elaborate a little bit. What do you mean by “thirds”? Is it a chord based on the 3rd of the given note that was just played (ie. In the overall melody)? Thanks.

    • @onethousandtwonortheast8848
      @onethousandtwonortheast8848 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@cw5365 our modern day music system is built on thirds. This is called “tertian”harmony. That means there’s usually a distance of a third between the notes of a chord when the chord is played in root position. In that spirit, most chords have three notes and these chords are called triads. Again, the number three comes up.
      It’s important to understand this basic concept: a triad or “chord”has three notes, but because it has three notes, there are three combinations. The first is root position, the second is first inversion, and the last is second inversion.
      The first thing Guthrie is doing here is picking the key he’s playing in. Once he picks the key, he finds out where the notes are of the major scale for the key. He then chooses a melody line that is made up of notes from that key’s scale.
      after that, he chooses chords that are built on thirds from the key he’s in to support the melody. The way you choose the correct chord, for the melody is usually by ear. This is where it music is not a science, it is art. If you have any other questions, just ask.

    • @cw5365
      @cw5365 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@onethousandtwonortheast8848 Thank you for the explanation. He is very good at creating melodies, and some of this is just hard to grasp at times. Can you give an example of building a chord from a melody note please? Does he mainly play the diatonic chord associated with the scale degree? Would this be the same process in a minor key or would the chords use the minor 3rd?
