One possible thing about orange-bellied baits not working as well in the fall: If you do run lures down 16-20 feet as Matt mentioned about fishing on Mille Lacs, then maybe you're not getting bit because the red/orange wavelengths have pretty much disappeared and gone to gray at those depths...so there isn't much contrast for them to notice the lure. If the water is clear I think there might be a bit of red/orange color remaining at that depth; but if there is any particulate matter in the water, then those colors are likely gone. Also, if it's windy in the fall there is going to be even less light down at those depths, due to the wave-induced increase in refraction and reflection. The white-bellied lures might also offer a bit more contrast to the fish at those depths, compared to higher up in the water column.
