    Thanks for the great tip. Like other commenters, I spread out the hooks beyond the width of the box. I think that this makes it a little easier to mount the box, since the hooks remain visible. I also made one other small modification by using a 1.25" wooden dowel, instead of the metal bar. I also added two bungie cords, one high and one low, connected to eye bolts in the wall. Works great in my 40's era single car garage. I don't even need to change the way I park.

    Update April 25, 2019: Roof Box back on my FJ Cruiser for the Summer. Box & Wall mount all systems go. Still never had an issue!
    November 16th 2015 This has been hanging in the same location with no problems, I bang into it every week when getting my lawnmower. Tomorrow, it goes back on my SUV for the winter, slopes open Wednesday.

      Jeff Weissman well done. I have the same box and I was looking to spend 100 bucks on a hoist system. this is much better.

    Thanks for this idea! We're in an old urban house, and I just hung it under a roof overhang out of the weather and about a foot above the ground. Watching the trouble with the fit on the hooks, I spread it a bit more and placed the hooks outside the footprint of the Skybox with a longer piece of conduit, and voila, perfect fit.

    • @UncleFjester

      Ah! Good idea on spreading the hooks out more!
      At my previous house this would have had to go outside too!

    Absolute genius! I am renovating my garage and was pondering what to do about our cool box that just takes up quite a bit of floor space. Then I saw this and boom! problem solved. Thanks!

    Picked up the various parts from Home Depot and boom! One variation, I have block walls in the garage. Had to drill and install hooks with Capcom anchors. Worked like a charm.

    Just hung my Yakima box using this same method. Cut the 3/4 conduit pipe to extend to the full length of the sides of the base and then hung the hooks 32” apart on the wall studs. Fit was perfect!

    NICE! Thank you for sharing this. I'm about to order a Thule Motion XT XL but wanted to set up a system to store it first. Even though we just received a ceiling hoist setup, it will be returned today and replaced with this method.
    Update: 18 Dec 2929 - I ordered the Thule Motion XT XL to mount on the Yakima Aero bars. It was this video that gave me inspiration to mount vertical, but went with the following modifications.
    Rods for hanging: I used two 1 1/4 inch x 4ft wooden dowels from Lowes as the hanger rods
    Hooks: instead of only hanging from the front mount points, I also added two hooks to support from the bottom points as well. All 4 hooks are positioned slightly wider than the base of the cargo box so that the dowels/rods fell solidly into the center of the hooks for more secure holding. (we have kids)
    Security: it would take considerable effort to knock a cargo box hung this way, but you can zip tie or use para cord to wrap the hanging rod to the hook so that it requires purposeful removal before the box can be removed from the wall.
    Nice to see a fellow HD rider. I ride a Street Glide and also run a group specifically for our larger touring models. Check it out, please.

    Wow and thanks for the video.
    We have cleaned out the garage and now was thinking what to do with the cargo box .. and came across several videos about hanging it from the top or making a large box to hold the box but then came across your video and we have a winner.
    Many thanks for your advise and I will soon get that Yule Cargo Box up along the wall ;-)

    Brilliant idea! has anyone found if hanging the box on a wall ends up loosening the mounting arms or reducing the overall arm strength? don't know if these boxes were designed to withstand their own weight like that for extended periods of time.

    • @UncleFjester
      @UncleFjester  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow, time flies! Based on the published date, I've hung this up every winter for 5 years with no issues. If you look at the design real close, you'll see how strong the mounts are. This doesnt weight much empty vs. a loaded box on the roof with the wind trying to lift it off. Plus I off road, (overlanding to millennials) with a full box. You will be fine!

    Great video! What size box is that? I have a Yakima Skybox 21 sqft box and I wonder if this would put too much stress on the mount arms.

    • @UncleFjester
      @UncleFjester  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine is an 18 Cubic foot. The mount arms can handle the hanging weight as long as its Empty.

  • @ZeeshanKhan-ld2ff
    @ZeeshanKhan-ld2ff 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This box is supposed to be hanged horizontally not vertically. It may be putting too much pressure the upper clamps. I would suggest to use the lower clamps in the same fashion and also add a shelf support at the bottom of the box. I would still buy the roof hanging system of I were you.

    • @UncleFjester
      @UncleFjester  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nonsense Grasshopper, this has been hanging like this for 6 months a year for the last 5 years. Not one problem, not on issue, Thanks for watching!

  • @kenshomi2

    • @chriscarr1666
      @chriscarr1666 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      thought that myself but the fittings cope with speeds of 70mph so assume the pull of gravity is nothing to worry about ;)

    • @EisBlade
      @EisBlade 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Max speed per the User Manual is actually 80 MPH. It also suggests storing the box horizontally, not vertically, but that just be their idea to best minimize customer warranty issues vs their costs covering them.
      If concerned about stresses being only on the front mounts then consider adding a 2nd set of hooks lower to distribute weight between all 4 mounts.
