Back in 1985 I started a 4 year apprenticeship with the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) in the UK, which was the nationalised power generating utility organisation. There were training centres at various locations across the UK, which were in the most part decommissioned but re purposed district power stations serving large town and cities. At the age of 17, I went with about 30 other spotty-faced lads to our local training centre in a town called Harrogate, in North Yorkshire. It was run by a guy called Desmond Mills (long gone now..) who wore three piece Tweed suits, and drove a green coloured classic Range Rover - we respected and feared him in equal measure. All the staff were brilliant, from the canteen ladies, store keepers, tutors and of course Desmond. The place was run like an army camp, it had to be, but we were well looked after, and learned all sorts of engineering skills and knowledge which I still draw upon to this day. Facilities included classrooms, locker rooms, electrical installation classrooms, hand tool workshops, welding and sheet metal fabrication shops, and of course a well equipped machine shop which included shaping machines, Colchester student lathes, and Bridgeport mills. We all loved our time at that facility, and gained a fantastic grounding, great experiences, skills and knowledge which we took into our work on power plant across the uk. Things changed in 1991, when the government of the day headed by the infamous Margaret Thatcher, began a massive de nationalisation of the UK utility companies which included the privatisation of the still revered CEGB. All of the training facilities were closed, and the assets sold to make short-term economic gains. I’m sad to say that I don’t know of any facility left now where young people can go to learn the type of skills which i and my fellow cohorts benefited from back in the 80’s. That facility you gave us a tour of reminded me of what we once had in the UK. I hope that The young people who’re fortunate enough to go and learn there truly appreciate the value of their training, I know that I still do to this day👍🏻🇬🇧
Wow, Karl That seems like what happened in Canada as well during what they call Ray days This buffoon paid high schools to take the shops out and now they’re only a handful of high schools that have shops in them anymore. That destroyed the apprenticeship system. There was much fewer viable candidates to enter the system Unfortunately, this is a public forum, and I can’t really voice my true opinion I remember when I was in grade school I think it was grade seven and eight we would go to a woodworking shop once a week and make things and also my high school had a full machine shop and welding/auto area as well. When I started my apprenticeship more than half of the tradesmen working or either English or German This phase 1 of the school is so big, I’m not kidding you when I said I showed you only around five or 10% looking through the large windows into the shop. It blows your mind when this phase of the school is completed. I will post another video to do a full walk-through of the school on all three floors would probably take about 30 minutes Ray
Nice set-up! I have a hard time wrapping my head around _how_ _much_ machine shop training has changed since I took a 1-quarter long class while in college as an elective ~40 years ago. My old class was literally an old WWII machine shop training facility that hadn't yet been bulldozed, full of leather belt driven (motors in base of the headstocks) South Bend lathes where we spent most of our time. But we did get to turn the needed mandrel & a gear blank to cut gears on a horizontal mill, so I can say that I at least cut one gear successfully (out of one try (after holding my breath nearly the whole time I was using the index head. The shop was originally powered with lineshafts from a single diesel engine mounted outside and it was quite dark, especially when compared to the great lighting you have in your new facility. I'm very glad to see that there are still "trade skills" schools operating like yours is -- your students will have a great chance at gaining the needed skills for good jobs in today's machine shops!
It is a sweet shop. For the past three years we haven’t been using a real indexing head we’re cutting our gears on the CNC. Indexing head and indexing is still on the curriculum so I printed and designed a 3-D printed index and head simulator. So the students get the best of both worlds higher end, CNC programming and the manual calculation of induction. I started my career as a Tool & Die Maker in (1972). In (1978) I changed my career to [NC] ---> [CNC], running all types of CNC machines. At that time "all" CNC controls were FANUC. It had an excellent feature to control {G00} rapid movement with a selector switch. (25%)-(50%)-(75%)-(100%). Later I became a "Blue Collar" [CNC] direct hands on manufacturing engineer. [F-18]. Because I could (100%) read the [CNC] programs, I never had a collision. * {G00} at (100%) = 400 inches/per minute ---> 1,016 centimeters/per minute. * 400 inches/per minute ÷ 4 = 100 inches/15 seconds. * 100 inches/15 seconds ÷ 3 = 33.3 inches/5 seconds. * 33.3 inches/5 seconds ÷ 5 = 6.66 inches/1 second. [17.0cm/1 second]. * 6.66 inches/1 second x 2 = 13.32 inches/2 seconds. [33.8cm/2 seconds]. * At (25%) Rapid: 13.32 inches/8 seconds. [33.8cm/8 seconds]. .... Conestoga College purchased (x15) HAAS - CNC machines. In the past I was able to to go into the machine software and alter parameters. WARNINGS: (A) Conestoga College "must" request a HAAS software engineer to come and alter all {G00}[R] functions at only (25%) all the time. (B) This will increase student safety by (75%) and save thousands of ($'s) yearly repair costs. (C) When it comes to CNC collisions, (75%) are CNC programs and (25%) incorrect clamping procedure.

I haven't viewed this video before.... rather than hate on your students with a jealous rage, perhaps I ought to consider becoming a student in my retirement. What's the least expensive course to take to gain access to this shop? I have several lathes, a bridgeport, and even a hydraulic surface grinder but I never get access to an wire edm machine and I can't even get shops to quote on my small volume parts I need edm cut. I'm glad CC has such a nice new shop because we need to train a lot more machinists to return more manufacturing capability to Canada
thanks for the nice comments Since this video was made, we’ve acquired high-end CMM machine And we’ve also acquired three new cynical grinders, and a handful of other pieces of equipment this is only one shop. All of the other shops are new as well and we just started construction a new automotive centre at the same campus.
@@shopandmath damn I watched the video on how to set up tapers for grinding, expecting to see the typical lathe grinding video and noted that the college had cylindrical grinders. I really wish I had one but sadly no room for one in our garage shop.
Absolutely OUTSTANDING !! I am SUPER Impressed as a Veteran 50 year Machinist /Toolmaker . I would have Never dreamed of such a Facility when I went to Industrial arts Machine shop as an Apprentice back in the 1960s ... This gives me HOPE that our Country can STILL Manufacture and Machine Parts of Amazing ACCURACY .... Yes, this is the campus that’s next to Toyota it’s on the same street as Corolla park I don’t know of any part-time courses currently, but it is possible for other divisions of the college run courses on a part-time basis
