    Just picked up a 1987 40hp evinrude. It’s got good compression, and by the looks of it had been setting for a long long time the fuel in the carburetors looked like maple syrup. Currently replacing the water pump and carburetors are rebuilt using your special sauce. Thanks again for taking the time to do these videos you and Kodi are the best man.

    Thank you for the videos they are very helpful, I wish I could get my Johnson 40 to run that smooth. DOesn't matter what I do to it, seems that I can't get the fuel mixture right it bogs all the time and is using about a gallon of fuel every 2 miles which seems super excessive!

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Holey Mackerel! If its using that much fuel it's gonna bog. Give those carbs a super cleaning and rebuild kits. The needle(s) may not be seating or worn. Floats not adjusted properly. The primer solenoid may be bad/leaking. The red handle needs to be in a straight back position. Or could only be firing on one cylinder, test for spark on both cylinders, weak or no spark will just pull fuel through. Unburned fuel will later drip from your motor. Throw a new set of plugs in it too! Something is letting too much fuel through. Find out what and you should be good to go! Thanks again & Stay tuned !

Great compression around 140 each carburetors where in bad bad shape looked like old coffee in the bowls they are rebuilt new water pump and fuel pump. These are great engines, will last forever with normal care. It is important to remember that messing with the idle speed will require messing with the cable adjustment and vica versa....You pulled the cam back to make sure it wasn't touching the roller, good man...Pulling the cam back required readjusting the WOT stop on the big throttle arm, good work!
    Please don't spend too much on that old 55hp until you get it running, glad you had an old harness...

    Good Morning, @ 3:52 mark in the video, you push back on the "spark lever assembly". Why did you have to do that? Is there no return spring anywhere that brings everything back to a set idle position? My 50 sits about 1/2"-5/8" away from the stop, but can easily be pushed back to position. Thanks

    Great video! I have a 50hp '74 Evinrude that has the same linkages as yours in this video. Should the cam roller and throttle cam have a small gap at idle. Also, which order do you adjust to dial in the idle? Idle adjustment screws on the carbs or the idle stop screw? How do you know when the idle set screw is in the correct location, just based on what speed you want in gear in idle? My motor has a hard time staying idle (cleaned and rebuilt everything already, should be good as new)

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Brandon. Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes If I remember correctly, very small gap. This old 40 had no idle adjustments on the carbs. They are synced by closing the butterflies at idle. You'll have to set your slow speed needles separately on the 74. Yes, Idle is then set in gear. I'm assuming/guessing on that model to dial in your carbs one at a time, probably 1.5 to 2 full turns out to start with, then slow increments of 1/8 turn until you get a "lean sneeze", then about a quarter turn back out should be around the sweet spot. I'm just guessing without a manual. But it shouldn't be to far off. If you could get it to run on one cylinder at a time and dial them in that way would be best. Scout around on the outboard forums like iboats, you should find some info there or check ebay for a used manual. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

    Hi I have a similar motor and it will run but only go up to 7 mph and it's 40hp. When u pull the shifter forward it's like a big gap then towards the end the motor will kick in so it's not working right when u pull the shifter forward but it'll work towards the end. Would you know what I have to do to get it to work correctly or is it just bad motor?

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Sounds like your cables need adjusted or replaced. When you adjust the cables you'll have to adjust the link & sync also. Everything needs to be set for it to run properly from idle speed/timing to full throttle speed/timing. Your best bet is to pick up a service manual specific to the year and model. It will give you step by step procedures to set up the synchronization and it will have a great troubleshooting section for any other problems you may have. These manuals show up on Ebay from time to time at a good price or you may have to download one off the net. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Well, I'm no expert. But I would start with a good Tune Up! Go back to the basics. Check compression and spark. Carburetors cleaned/rebuilt, fuel pump, new plugs/wires, reset the link and sync/cables. Thats really about all you can do unless you have a specific fuel or ignition problem. If you dont have a manual check ebay for a good used one, you'll need it for the link and sync settings. I buy all my parts there too. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

      HEY, More than likely its your slow speed idle circuit in the carb is clogged. All it takes is one carb to throw everything off. That's where I would start. • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Its always best to start with a good carb(s) cleaning. Don't just spray some crap carb cleaner in it and think it's clean. Those high speed jets need to be surgically clean. Even if just one carb is clogged you won't go anywhere. I just went through it on this Johnson 40 hp outboard. The guy I sold it to let it sit for two years. What a mess! He brought it back asking me for help, I just posted the videos a couple weeks ago. "Return of the Johnson 40" pt 1, 2, & 3. Yours may be doing the same thing, if need be, check out my carb cleaning video, "The 2 Most Important Things". Once the carbs are clean and if you still have a problem then it becomes a process of elimination. What's next? Fuel pump, primer bulb, tank vent clogged, fuel lines, air leak. I just went through a similar situation with my Johnson 60hp. Replaced the tank fuel line and primer bulb, no help, moved on to the fuel pump and replaced it and Boom! Runs like a champ again. It's really just routine maintenance, so double check the fuel system when you clean the carbs. If you have any problems I'm always happy to help. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

I was told the lower unit was a 73 - 76 .That i needed to find a 77 - 88 lower unit. That they all would fit on but the later ones shifts the right way "up for forwards".Does that sound that right?

      Hey. I wouldn't know off hand without doing some homework. It sounds a little funny though. Check those years on marineengine.com and see if they are left or right hand rotation. Come to think of it you might have the wrong prop. Looks like the 78 & 79 use the same props so your gearcase should be spinning clockwise or right hand rotation. If it is then its not the gearcase its the prop. Curious to know what you find out. Thanks for watching and commenting !

      I know this is old, but the lower unit on the 75 stinger was backwards. My father was sold a used lower unit on a 70 and nobody realized what happened. We put it in the water, went to back up from the trailer and the thing wouldn't get off the trailer no matter what we did. We look behind us and the water is being thrust rearward, meaning we had the engine in FORWARD but the control box in reverse.

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. There's so many possibilities as to what it could be, like a coil breaking down, they're fine when cool but start to give out when they heat up. It's either fuel or ignition, you'll have to completely go through each system and start eliminating things. You could start with ignition and test which cylinder may be the culprit. When it starts to bog try running one cylinder at a time. If one runs and the other doesn't then you'll know where to start. If they both bog you'll know that its something that effects the entire fuel or ignition system. It could be something as simple as a coil or the fuel tank vent is closed. Depending on the model and year it may have whats called S.L.O.W Mode. This usually kicks in due to over heating or a bad heat sensor. If you cant figure it out, there are a bunch of things to check in the troubleshooting section of an OMC manual specific to your model. Check ebay for a good used one. Thanks again & Good luck!

    My 50hp runs great, it will run at speeds as low as 2.5mph before dying. But when I put it in neutral it usually dies. Not a good thing when I’m coming up to the ramp. 150 on both cylinders. I believe my carbs are adjusted correctly. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks again

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey. If its a fuel issue you could try running it on one cylinder at a time, it might help narrow things down. All it takes is one carb to throw things off. Slow speed circuit may need cleaned. If both cylinders act the same I would go through the fuel system from the tank back. Look for air leaks in the fuel lines, and gasket behind the fuel pump. Check the pump too, diaphragm may be stiffening up. Could be the link and sync too, things vibrate and move, cables stretch and get worn. May just need adjusting and a turn or two on the idle screw on the linkage, but be careful, if you turn that idle screw than you'll have to reset everything! Curious to know what you find out.
      Thanks again for tuning in!

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in! Well it's either Fuel or Ignition. In a worst case scenario its both! My best advice is to get an OMC service manual specific to your year/model. It has a great troubleshooting section and will tell how it should be set up, like the synchronization or "link & sync" and timing, if thats not set up right it will never run properly. It will also tell you how to test igntion parts, for example you say the key won't stop the motor so you assume its the powerpack when more than likely it's a faulty key switch, bad ground connection or bad wiring situation. The manual will have a wiring schematic for your model and tests to perform to track down the problem. Never assume anything with these outboards. Remember - what may seem like a fuel issue may be an ignition problem and vice versa, they can mimic each other. At some point you'll have to pick one, is it Fuel or Ignition, now it becomes an Procees of Elimination. You'll have to go through the entire Ignition system from the key switch all the way back to the spark plugs. Same with Fuel system from the fuel tank all the way back to the spark plugs. Eliminating possible causes to your problem along the way. For example, is the fuel tank working properly, vent open, fuel line clean and no air leaks. Carburetors, surgically clean, float level set properly, high speed jet clean, low speed circuit clean, link & sync timing set to spec, slow speed needles adjusted properly. Intake manifold working, no air leaks, reed valves good. Fuel pump/lines working, no air leaks. Engine compression, high enough on both cylinders to run properly. etc... Then do the same with the ignition. Key switch good. Correct wiring from the key switch. Stator, Timer base, Rectifier good. Srong spark at plugs. Good working Coils, coils can test good but will breakdown when they get hot. Good plugs/ plug wires. Is ignition synchronized with fuel, etc... I think you get the idea here. There is one more system, thats the cooling system. Worst possible thing is overheating or a blown head gasket. Try ebay for a good used omc manual, usually aroung $30. Take your time! Don't go buying parts you may not need on an assumption! If your blowing powerpacks you'll need the manual. It will save you time & $. Jumping around on the innerweb looking for that one answer to your problem is a waste of time. There is no One Answer. Good Luck!

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Check your primer solenoid, while your cranking it push the key in to prime it, right, hold it in for the entire cranking time. If no start, take out the plugs and see if they are wet or dry. If wet then your getting fuel to the plugs, too wet and it's flooding out. If dry your solenoid may not be working, turn the red handle on the solenoid pointing downward, this will open the solenoid up for emergency situations. Crank it again, it should start, if not test and replace. I recently put my fuel line on backwards coming off the fuel pump to the carbs. No fuel to carbs. Just a thought. It happens! Hahaha. After you pump the primer bulb on the tank fuel line there should be enough fuel in the carbs for it to run for 5 minutes or so. Curious to know what you find out. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

I wouldn't go messing around with the carbs until you fire it up. Pump up the primer bulb on the tank fuel line until its hard and the carbs are full. Crank it again while holding the key in and the fast start lever is up. If it sounds like its going to die push the key in again giving it more fuel, once it starts and revving high give it a second then slowly return the lever back down to a idle. Hey. Yes. Johnson/Evinrude are the most reliable outboards ever in my opinion. Just look at how many are still kickin! They are the Briggs & Stratton of outboard motors. Best Tip I can give you is to go back to basics. As with any "new old" motor, check compression. if it's good the rest is just a pain in the azz! Hahaha. Pull the carbs and clean them properly, if need be, check out my video on "Johnson Evinrude Carb Cleaning the 2 Most Important Things", replace any worn parts. Get the manual for that outboard. Try ebay for a good used one. You may want to get a proper wiring harness too, check ebay for that also. If you got good compression, strong ignition/spark and smokin clean carbs it should run. Then dial it in. Curious to know what happens. Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay tuned !

      @@richardbrewer2542 Hey. when you say, stay running, do you mean idling? When you cleaned the carbs did you check the slow speed idle circuit. 3 tiny holes in the top of the carb throat just behind the butterfly . if they're clogged no amount of cleaner will help, they need to be reamed out. same with the high speed jet/orifice in the carb bowl. You may already know all of this, I dont know, but these two things get overlooked all the time. Check out my carb cleaning video if need be. th-cam.com/video/401zCRctu1c/w-d-xo.html. Did it run before you took the vro out? I dont know to much about converting from a vro to fuel pump but maybe the pumps not right. Pull the fuel line off at the carbs, crank the motor over, the fuel should com shooting out. Try pumping the primer bulb as she starts to die. Basically, just covering all possible fuel issues, its a process of elimination. Air leak in fuel supply, tank vent not open, primer bulb bad. When she dies pull the plugs, are they wet or dry. Too wet and fouling out then its getting to much fuel. primer solenoid bad? Is the red handle on the solenoid in correct position? Should be straight back. prime it up and start it, pinch off the main hose to carbs from primer solenoid and see if it runs. if it runs replace/rebuild solenoid. after you've checked the entire fuel system and your confident. and you still have issues move on to ignition. What may seem like a fuel issue can be ignition and vice versa. I'm assuming it has good compression. Simple things to do are spark test with a good spark tester, should jump 7/16 or more. Try running it on one cylinder at a time like its two separate motors. That may help narrow things down to like a bad coil. Other then that any other ignition parts you'll need a manual specific to that model and a meter to test the parts. Try ebay for a good used manual. Curious to know how it goes. Didn't see a fuel pump diaphragm kit on ebay so just put the mercury diaphragm part number and shammy whammy up it came on Amazon👍 it left Florida at 3:30am by truck. Hope it doesn't have a flat tire on the way to Seattle. Haha
