- Hi all,
here is my response to Jason's @blueoxmodelshop3405 question on how does your mental health benefit through building models . As always i ramble on but this video is personal and i thank all the kind people who have supported me over these years .
Also Paul at @LeftCoastModelCarBuilds has a question i will answer in another vid later this week .
Regards Gav.
Great vidieo Gav all the best to you stay safe and happy modelling
Cheers Paul i thought it was a valued question if one person can be helped then its worth it , thanks my old marra . Regards Gav.
Hi Gav, I watched this video a couple of times before I could comment. I have had mental health issues and thinking this through has allowed me to appreciate how much this hobby does help me. Listening to your thoughts (ramblings) makes me appreciate that I'm not on my own. Thanks for putting it out there. Cheers marra 👍
Thanks for listening Bob we can all find a place to escape out of the dark at least for a little while its just finding what works for each individual , look after yourself marra as best you can . Regards Gav.
Hi Gavin, you really did a nice job with this video. I completely agree with everything you talked about. YT is an extension of our hobby. It's like having a group of friends all living on the same street. The internet makes the world seem so small. Have a great day Marra. Jeff
Thanks Jeff that's the way i see it if you want to share your hobby with like minded people this is the place to be , look after yourself my old marra . Regards Gav.
Marra I always enjoy hearing from you and you know that I consider you one of my best marras and I really enjoy your rambles and awesome vw bus ❤😊

You’re a good man Gavin Booth, giving yourself to help others. I enjoy your videos, ramblings, waffles and all. 😁❤️
Thanks Ronald there's a ramble in nearly every vid i do why make a five minute one when they can be thirty ! I appreciate you being around marra . Regards Gav.
@@gavinbooth 🤗👍🏻
Great video Gav, nice wolkswagen bus.
Thanks Mars greatly appreciated marra . Regards Gav.
I am not a modeller, but my partner is, and I always listen to your videos. I love the way you are so honest about your problems, and your encouragement to others to seek help if they are in a downwards spiral. I am just trying to climb out of my own black hole and find that either gardening or jewellery making are my safe spaces. Thank you again Marra. Bright Blessings on you. 💜
Thank you Lorraine your words mean a lot, each other is all we have we shouldn't leave anyone behind if we have to we carry them . To many damaged people are leaving us through no fault of their own . I hope you are still reaching for the light . Enjoy your hobbies marra its a safe place to go . Regards Gav.
I should have added that I think I'm on a slippery slope to plastic modelling. I have built 4 of Aifix's quickbuilds 😂😂😂💜
You know Lorraine i would still stuff those up ! I have a F105 starfighter to build its my favourite aircraft but my life it will be a glue bomb when completed . Look after yourself . Regards Gav.
I really don't know what to say mate. A wonderful video shining a light on mental health issues. You are a major cornerstone of the YT community and despite your issues your thoughts are always for others. I luv you man and take care
Thanks Steve i try not to bring it in to too many vids but as Jason asked the question and i live it every day i thought i would share . Lets hope someone starts building models and painting figures oh and custom diecast ! from it . Thanks for being my marra . Regards Gav.
You're a great friend Gav stay strong stay healthy mate
Thanks Justin look after yourself marra . Regards Gav.
Really good video based on the subject matter. Mental health is so easily overlooked by so many that don't understand it. I'm not saying I understand it completely, but I know people that deal with it and they have helped me understand a small portion of it. I've been away from TH-cam and modeling for at least a month and am only now catching up. Hope you have a great week Gav!!
Thanks Larry glad your back marra and your comment is greatly appreciated . Regards Gav.
Good video brother, your discussion here or what you have been through, I get it, when you chat about how it has kind of shaped you and how you are in the videos…I can see that picture and it’s great you jumped out and shared. It’s a great community, very much enjoy your channel be it cars, figures or military etc, keep posting and enjoy the hobby my friend! 🤙🏼
Paul your a decent bloke and your comment is very much appreciated marra . Regards Gav.
@@gavinbooth Thank you brother and for the insight also, you are doing great with the channel!
Hi marra I'm with you on the head thing , I was hit by a car as a kid the cops reckon he was doing somewhere around 60 when his big steel box connected with my soft body and you can imagine which was left in a mess. My head was all smashed up my brain was badly injured and left me with head problems . So I can understand where you are coming from bro. Painting takes me away where head problems are less aware .
A hobby of any description can really help someone out with head problems Terry thanks for telling your story marra . Regards Gav.
Some things to unpack here...
A generation ago, and before, mental health wasn't something people, (particularly men) talked about.
People (again men) who speak out now about their own journey are often called 'brave'. I prefer the term 'honest'.
Many people suffer, many can't admit it, talk about it or seek help. This is made better by people with a platform, (like Gav Booth) who speak honestly. We fans of the channel know, like and respect Gav. (He's got some issues he copes with, so what? People live with diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, allsorts...) A mental issue isn't really very different to a physical issue in most cases.
Trauma does not go away, but it can be managed. (Gav is an example of a person coping WELL as best they can.) He inspires others, I think?
One final thought in support of this (Gavin's) honest post. Gavin, as many fans of his channel will know, was a serving British soldier in Northern Ireland when British soldiers were at daily risk of being killed. It was a war.
Now, I'm a Southern 'Catholic' Irish Nationalist and I support PEACE in Ireland. (I don't blame the squaddies who were sent to 'NI' to do a job their duty demanded. Very Bad Things happened on all sides of 'The Troubles. War makes everybody guilty in part...) It would be REASONABLE, (maybe even 'heroic'???) for Gav Booth to put his 'PTSD' down to his service.
Gav doesn't do that. (He alludes to the fact that his trauma stems from an earlier time and experiences...) Again, without going into detail, such childhood trauma is something many peole just don't acknowledge, far less speak about. Gavin Booth most probably would balk at being called 'brave' to speak out, so I'll just call him 'honest'.
In truth, OUR HOBBY, (or any other intelligent and passionate interest) can help process trauma. It can heal. (Not entirely, but it can help...)
PERSONALLY, I became a fan/subscriber to Gav's channel because I'm a Modeller and I like the content. (But I too have mental health 'PTSD'/Depressive issues... Some days are better than others, mostly I do fine!) But to see A REGULAR GUY create great and informative posts (I like 15mm/28mm Historicals) and CASUALLY SAY, "Yeah and occaisonally I struggle with my 'head', no big deal..." is something ELSE I can connect to...
Honest? (Certainly!) It lessens the 'stigma', it allows people to 'relate' and maybe even talk.
I watch this channel for Gav's modelling/painting skills, for inspiration and ideas. (But IF HE WANTS to talk about more personal issues I'm down for that as well...) We KNOW the guy, he's kind of a friend? (A 'Marra', even!!!)
Total respect to the man.
xx SF
Steve i don't no what to say that's unusual for me as always you have a gift with words and use them so effectively . Thanks for being around marra . Regards Gav.
