You can't set up lava the same as an infinite water source. You have to use dripstone. Also, it's a lot more efficient to set your water bucket down 1 block to the side of a lava pool so it pools over the lava and turns ALL of it into obsidian instead dumping it directly into the lava and eliminating the lava block you dump the water into. I like to leave the water bucket in place while I'm mining the obsidian too, that way if there's still any lava underneath it will immediately turn to obsidian instead of burning the obsidian block I just mined.

Lava source block can only be created by enabling it during new world creation. (Lava converts to source T/F) Or by command prompt after world creation.

There is a gamerule that lets lava create source blocks though when creating a world though.
