What a great video! You are so lucky! I did a concert at Carnegie Hall when I was around 14, my mother was so against my music that she refused to come to the concert! My dad , on the other hand was very supportive. He was a closet singer! A pretty good tenor but never performed. He was into the music publishing business though, literally! He was a lithographer working for G Schirmer. I can look at old Messiah choral scores and pick out his edits! They were his hand engraved repairs to the plates. He was a press operator, so almost every Schirmer score went through him from the 1950s to the 1970s! Anyway, if it were not for my dad, I would have missed out on literally thousands of great life experiences as a professional musician. You are so very lucky! Keep on doing what you love! It makes life worth living! 😊
Both my teachers and parents told me not to do music beyond school even though that's the only thing I wanted to do. I got terrible grades because I wasn't interested in studying the Geology course my parents had picked for me so I joined the army as a musician!! When I left the army my mum then suggested I become a flute teacher, so I did, then went to uni and studied music like I should have done in the first place. I am a flute nerd too! I should add, my Grandma was always supportive of my music.
"My child here is weird herself~" Not even 10 seconds in an Mama JAF is throwin shade like a palm tree! Love the honesty, and your reaction is priceless cuz you KNOW it! xD
I knew that you and I are around the same age. I’m 31 (I’ll be 32 this year) and I started my undergrad in fall of 2011. That’s awesome that your mom was supportive of you!
Oh, you're back on TH-cam! Such a big difference when your family is supportive and responsible about affirming your strength and allowing the space to find your space. I have a HK expat and Christian background and had parents who gave me a blank slate as faar as choosing goes, so I get aspects of where you're coming from - the difference is your family did some guidance and support whereas mine literally didn't, so to this day I've had to work it out on my own. Thankfully at church I fell into playing flute by ear and found a niche to express my musical self. I have NO GRADES due to the lack of guidance and stopping all my extra-curricular activities when I suddenly left Hong Kong to restart life in Australia where my mum's family lives - I can play by ear, which is good but I'm essentially a hack who cannot teach anyone grades. So parental support and guidance in the journey of your path in life is so important.
Your tenacity and vulnerability is truly inspiring, which is what being an Artist is all about. I've been watching your videos for additional music education since I competed in The Grand National Championships for The Pride of Broken Arrow in 2017 and 18'. I treasure your ideology and comprehension of music theory, even with me being a saxophonist. Because of you, I know that the flute and saxophone share various properties, just written in different octaves. You are a phenomenal flutist, artist and human being over all. Love what you do and hope you do too. This message is written with great gratitude.
My mind instanly: Why u dont practice for ya competition, why u outa tune, why I cant hear the flute!!!! Why u dont practice 40 hours a day, why u dont get the viola, I mean the alto flute!!! 😂🤣
It does sound like a trigger finger. As a pianist doctor also with hyper flexibility in my 50s, I would encourage your mom to find a good hand occupational therapist to help her with not only stretching but strengthening and injury prevention. Overstretching hyper flexible joints can cause some issues. Stretching is great but the tendency to over extend when you are what she refers to as “double jointed” is common. Blessings on your day.
@@JustAnotherFlutist Yes ;) Grew up classically trained and still love to play. Unfortunately, with the hyperflexibility syndrome & now early arthritis in my hands, I get frustrated with what I can't do anymore on the piano, so I've been expanding to some other instruments that might be easier on the hands as I age and have loved the flute. Doesn't take much to set off my joints - Developed a killer tendonitis in my right elbow when I upgraded my flute to a heavier silver one with a Bb foot 😭 Just have to not overdo it... BTW, you made a review video on a similar Gemeinhardt intermediate to mine, and it was so incredibly helpful (It was the one where you draw the inside of the mouth to track the most effective airflow. Worked wonders!). I still go back and rewatch it when I'm having tone issues.

Joanna do you still do art? I’d love to see it! I do a little and make jewelry too. I think it’s interesting how multifaceted musicians are
