Fixing a tiny crack in the coolant reservoir of a 2012 Ford Focus with a 2.0L engine can be done with some basic tools and DIY skills. Here's a step-by-step tutorial to assess and fix this issue:
*Note:* Ensure that the engine is cool before starting this repair.
    *Materials/Tools Needed:*
    1. Replacement Coolant Reservoir
    2. Screwdriver
    3. Pliers
    4. Hose Clamps (if needed)
    5. Coolant
    6. Safety Glasses and Gloves
    *Step 1: Safety First*
Always wear safety glasses and gloves to protect yourself from any coolant spillage or sharp edges.
    *Step 2: Open the Hood*
Pop the hood of your Ford Focus and locate the coolant reservoir. It's usually on the passenger side of the engine bay, near the front.
    *Step 3: Drain the Coolant*
Position a catch pan or bucket beneath the vehicle to catch any spilled coolant. Carefully remove the cap from the coolant reservoir and set it aside. Use pliers if it's difficult to open. Allow the coolant to drain into the pan.
    *Step 4: Remove the Reservoir*
Using a screwdriver, carefully disconnect any hoses or clamps that are attached to the reservoir. Keep track of their positions to reconnect them later. Once disconnected, remove the reservoir from its mounting brackets.
    *Step 5: Inspect the Reservoir*
Examine the reservoir for cracks. If you find a small crack, you can attempt to repair it with epoxy or a plastic welding kit. If the crack is significant or if the reservoir is severely damaged, it's better to replace it.
    *Step 6: Repair (If Necessary)*
If you choose to repair the crack, follow the instructions on your epoxy or plastic welding kit carefully. Make sure the area is clean and dry before applying the repair material. Allow it to cure fully before proceeding.
*Step 7: Install the New Reservoir*
If you're replacing the reservoir, insert the new one into the mounting brackets. Reattach any hoses or clamps that you disconnected earlier. Make sure all connections are secure.
    *Step 8: Refill with Coolant*
Using a mixture of coolant and distilled water (as specified in your vehicle's manual), refill the coolant reservoir to the recommended level. Check for any additional leaks around the new reservoir.
    *Step 9: Bleed the System*
Start the engine and let it run with the radiator cap off. This allows any trapped air to escape from the cooling system. Keep topping up the coolant as needed until the level stabilizes.
    *Step 10: Check for Leaks*
Inspect the area around the new reservoir for any signs of leaks or drips. Also, monitor the engine temperature to ensure it doesn't overheat.
    *Step 11: Close the Hood*
Once you're confident that there are no leaks and the engine is running at the correct temperature, replace the radiator cap and close the hood.
By following these steps, you can assess and fix a tiny crack in the coolant reservoir of your 2012 Ford Focus without the need for a mechanic. However, if you're uncomfortable with any part of this process, or if the crack is extensive, it's advisable to seek professional assistance. Coolant system issues are essential to address promptly to prevent overheating and engine damage.

    Problem solved!
Easy fix - Coolant Reservoir Expansion Tank
    Amazon Link - amzn.to/2WKAy5c
Turned out to be a pin-hole sized crack in the radiator reservoir tank, in the engine compartment.
This was much more affordable than going to a mechanic!
The pin-hole crack caused the water in the radiator to slowly leak out and cause a low water problem that was only detectable when the car was cooled off. I'll have a video of the updated and fixed problem. I'll add a link to the reservoir that I replaced.
It was a fast and easy fix!
Here is one on Amazon for about $40 bucks - I paid about $50 in the auto shop
    Amazon Link - amzn.to/2WKAy5c
    Also the best antifreeze/coolant ... a full 5-Stars and over 300 reviews.

Please tell me. I have a Focus MK3 2015 1.0 ecoboost. When the air conditioner is on, everything works fine. No overheating. But if you turn off the air conditioner and drive. The coolant in the reservoir begins to boil, but the temperature on the instrument panel is normal. Help me please. I'm tired of this car, I want to pour gasoline on it and burn it.

It’s a fast, relatively inexpensive fix, and if it’s not the problem then you’ll have eliminated the potential problem in the future. I’d replace it just in case also check the hoses and clamps.

Dude my 2012 focus does the EXACT same thing. Totally random.. I went to the store, no problem with temp.. It was cool outside well.. 30 min later I get in my car and start it. The engine was idling for about 3 minutes as I check emails on my phone.. I then start driving and get the overheating alert! I pull over and shut off the car.. within 2 minutes the temp gauge showed normal temperature? This has happened twice, very random?? I’ll have to read through the comments here and see if there is a resolution.

This car has a great coolant system IF YOU KEEP COOLANT IN THERE... that should be the first thing you check and if it starts over heating, even just for a second, stop the car because it can really mess your engine up and it’s not worth it

So did it work out? Haha I'm having the problem with my 2008 Ford focus the thing is is that I was installing an LED light way down below the Grill in the front of and bottom of the car don't ask haha just had nothing better to do with my time that day anyway I end up pushing on this plastic piece which is near the radiator and the plastic piece seems to be pretty tough so I left it alone didn't push it anymore but still it is strange because I'm wondering if there is a gauge on the other side because literally that's when the problem started as soon as I got back in my car the problem started.

Good morning, how do I know if I should change the temperature sensor? What I see is that when I start my vehicle in the morning the needle goes up somewhat quickly to the middle (between 30 seconds and a minute letting idle) but it never goes beyond that no matter if I drive a lot or leave the car running for several hours on a hot day... is that a symptom of a faulty temperature sensor? or that could be a symptom of the Thermostat that is failing?

    • @NickKosta
      @NickKosta  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes - embarrassingly enough it seemed that the radiator reservoir was low on water or antifreeze. When the engine is cool I topped it off and filled it up. That seem to solve the issue. Which is concerning for a larger problem but I haven’t looked into that yet. Try topping off the coolant reservoir for the radiator. Mine would take about half a gallon. I’ve done this about three times since posting this video and everything works smoothly. It also fixed the heater issue. Which I’m guessing is related.

Mine too. It did it at first when i was in the drive-thru lane waiting behind several cars then again a little while ago while the car was in PARK and running for a couple of minutes. The coolant level is fine. Also, the a/c is blowing hot when I'm at a stoplight or not going fast. What is weird is that it if I'm parked and the a/c is on, it will blow hot for a few minutes then all of a sudden it will blow cold. People tell me it's the fan not blowing.

So my wife has a 2012 Ford Focus SE. She drove it an hour to the town where she goes to college.
When she got there while she was in a fast food line, the car says "HEY I"M OVERHEATING BAAAHHH"
So she blasts the heaters, doesn't drive beyond 50 MPH. Car doesnt overheat. She's in that town for 3 days, drives back home via the HW, same safety precautions taken... Heater on full blast, staying at 50 MPH or less, does not overheat.
So we take it to the Mechanic... they tell me that they can't replicate the scenario.
They left it idle for a couple days, and took it for a 30 minute test drive.
This test drive was probably in town, I don't expect a mechanic would want to intentionally take a faulty car to the highway 😆 so not exposing it to the HW conditions that triggered the overheat issue.
    😕 So now wut?
I guess we'll take it up and down the HW by our town and see if we can get her to overheat again but I'm at a loss for what to do next if a mechanic is just gonna say they dunno.
