    We've had a great flow this year (goldenrod & so on) but I've been dealing with a lot of robbing. And they didn't touch my pollen patties but the hive beatles love them.

    Have you lost any hives to hive Beatles this year?

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No Trey I haven't. Making your splits to have plenty of bee coverage is the key. I have had a few colonies that perished for other reasons and had to quickly save my combs before the beetle took over! Killing them in traps help reduce the stress.

    • @BellahWorks

      Kamon Reynolds - Tennessee's Bees I lost a big hive this year to Beatles I think, my theory is for most of the summer it had a screed bottom board witch allowed Beatles to come into the hive. I switched to a solid bottom board after noticing this happening and noticing excessive amounts of Beatles in the trap. By then I guess it was to late. A week later I noticed Beatle larva at the entrance. After dismantling the hive the entire bottom board was coved with larva. It was a terrible mess to clean up. Lucky I still have 3 hives left. Thanks for sharing your bee keeping perspective. It’s helps me become a better bee keeper.

    I really like the idea of using jester nucs for splits! Then moving them into 10 frame boxes. Wooden ware gets expensive. In one of your early videos you pointed out how important it is to have the same equipment so everything is interchangeable within the apiary. I'm sold on that philosophy!!

      Thankfully we have a 1600 sq ft fence around them now so that they can free range more than just moving the pen once a day. Raccoons and the neighbors dogs are big issues right now.
      The strip in the hive is apivar and it is daily killing mites

    Like the old saying goes, sometimes your the bug and sometimes your the windshield. Spring you were the bug. Now your the windshield. Can't be good always. Life is full of trials. How you get through the bad defines us as humans and hopefully we are able to learn and get better.

      Hey Jed D. Peyton Manning was awesome to watch! The reason they are on the ground is because it is quick and easy. They are only going to be in those boxes for a month and a half and do very well for me like this. Haven't seen any ill effects doing this for such a short period.

    Has anyone ever done a study on how much a bee consumes in a day. I was wondering how much honey is in a cell and how many bees can it sustain and for how long. I realize it will depend on how active the bees are. The only thing I found was two conflicting statements that a honey bee can produce 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime or that a single honeybee can produce a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime. I will be overwintering bees in a layens hive for the first time this year and the bees are suppose to have a larger band of honey on the larger frames that will sustain them and there really is no way to have sugar placed on top of the hive like a langstroth hive. I will probably put sugar in a frame feeder for a reserve. It is an insulated hive so that might also make them more active thus consuming more resources during the winter.
