    Hi Kamon Reynolds,
    Those frames which are devided to 3 sections will used as an organic method against Varroa, bees will build it to drones cell under the season. Varroa preferred drones broad, every week you will take away the section with capped drones brood. We use it here in Sweden. It will be the third frame in the brood box. When it is time to use formic acid or oxalic acid you will find the different between hives with and without this method, not a lot of mites when you combined with this method, you can call it drone cutout.

    It's really heartwarming to see how well that hive is doing. They're so gentle (I remember you taking them from the tree and how they were pretty chill about it), and that must be one good little queen too. It's wonderful to see them ready for a new box already.
    You said you did a varroa treatment, so I was curious about that. Did you do a mite count after you were done, and if you did how was it? It's interesting to learn how the feral bees are doing. I know some people think that surviving feral bees will gradually become better at managing the mites, but I wonder if the mite devastation is too quick for that to happen.

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it is a combination of some resistance and colonies swarming-shedding mites. When we as beekeepers remove them from the wild it changes things for them In my opinion. I did a oxalic acid vapor treatment 6-7 days after install and they dropped 19 mites onto the board below the apimaye. Not too bad but they were a small hive.

With the cold temps.. this will really be a very interesting experiment.. cuz I'm looking forward to see how the hive preforms in your hot heat ..would be really sweet to know what the internal temperature is in the middle of the. Hive on a 90-degree day...lol can you tell I'm like a kid Christmas morning waiting to open the Christmas gift?? Thanks 👍

    Question!! 🙋‍♂️ You said you treated them for varroa when you installed them in this hive. I assume you used OA vapor... Did you give them two or three days to settle in, or did you do it right away? I'm getting a couple packages of bees this coming spring, and I want to treat them, but I don't want to drive them off by doing it too soon.

    Hey Kamon on plastic foundation that the bees didn't finish drawing out last year, is there a way to get them to draw on the plastic that they don't seem to want to touch now? they are making new comb thats not attached to the plastic.

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is very common. Whewn the bees stop drawing foundation what they didn't turn into comb typically gets picked at until there is holes in the wax foundation or there is just plastic left on the plastic foundation. I find taking those comb/foundations and putting a little beeswax on them with my roller system does the trick

    Kamon the latches on the apimay connect differently depending on what you are connecting. when connecting boxes use the upper most latch. when connecting a box to the cover user the lower latch when using the feeder. If you are connecting a box to a cover that does not have a feeder use the upper latch.

    Another great video! I always get a chuckle or two, because I see myself every time you forget something or something doesn't work out quite right! Your method to draw the bees up to the next box is intriguing. Currently I have two medium supers on my 2 hives with only wax Foundation, no drawn comb. The bees don't seem to be drawing them out very much, so I stuck a couple of deeps on top with some drawn comb in hopes of attracting them up to get them drawing at the Supers. Do you think that's a good idea or am I being an idiot?

    In MA. I have one of these and at 4 years old it has never over wintered a hive, not even this mild winter. I had less than %10 loss this winter. The hive in this was huge covered all 20 frames with bees. They didn't starve, it looks like they got wet and froze. Mite count was nothing. So this I will use for splits and new swarms but it's wooden boxes for me. They just seem to work best in the north.

The bees love them and I now make everything for the hive. Boxes frames everything. And they over winter so well. But I will use it for cut outs and swarm catching. The way it secures is very nice.

    It's not that The vorra reproduce better on the drone pupa. The only reason that they prefer it is that there's more fat in the drone larvae that they can feed on rather than their worker larvae.

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They do produce more viable reproductive females due to their 7 extra days in the cell...... Also, varroa did not naturally reproduce in worker brood on the Asian honeybee only drones, which is another reason they prefer drone brood. I am sure the drones do provide better nourishment. Biologically our worker brood is different and the mites can successfully reproduce in our worker brood. This creates a high population of mites and creates a problem for the host and the parasite unlike the Asian honeybee which only had a short drone production season keeping things in balance so that both parties could survive.
      Part of living in a fallen world is that we get to do things by the sweat of our brow! Who knows what the next pest or virus will be!
