if you have online accounts, you're in danger of SIM swapping theft. Phone apps have nothing to do with it. Some financial companies are forcing us to enable 2FA that uses our phone number.
whether or not you have the banking app on your phone makes absolutely no difference, banks still use codes in text messages for verification, even though it isn't secure enough, this scam has nothing to do at all with any apps
This happened to my friend last year. $22K of crypto gone in a flash. It was discovered that a hotel room beside him was able to swipe his SIM. Be careful out there, especially when traveling.

a guy working at boost mobile in Cleveland pulled this on me I needed new phone he switched my Sim card I told him I seen him swap my Sim card for another one we argued for hour he finally gave me back my Sim card I switched to t mobile and never had problems so this is surprising but I never use my phone to do banking or pay bills never use ur phone pay bills or banking
Yes, but giving away all authority to one singular system is the same as being taken over by dictatorship. Thats why Laws and regulations allows you to work with financial industry with personal discretion. Ethical procedures and transparency is what we all seek in transactions. Systematic abuse/frauds has to be reported so we can cancel out and track certain processes to be held accountable publicly through judiciary without dismissal.
You should avoid using Text Message codes for your 2FA for this exact reason, using the QR codes that generate a code in an app on your device is how you want to do it. Authly, Google Authenticator, etc... This is really the only way to protect your accounts in the event you get a sim swap attack.

In my country you can only swap or replace your sim by visiting mobile carrier center and it done via a kiosk. You enter your mobile number, place in your ID and thumbprint, if it match then you can proceed
I had a similar issue, being someone who knows a bit about technology I never use my phone to check my bank, 401K, or anything with sensitive data. Always use Ubuntu that I run out of a floppy disk and always, always use wired internet since wireless is still very easy to hack.

I can't believe people put so much trust into their electronic device. We've been going at it now since the early to mid nineties and every day a new scam comes about.
banking apps have nothing to do with this fraud, it involves transferring the phone number to a new SIM, so that the criminals can receive those texts with a code to log in to important accounts like online banking and the like. in fact, banking apps can help stop this kind of fraud by providing an alternative way to prove you have the device involving the app like approving a notification or using the app to get a code, this scam doesn't involve installing any malware on the phone or anything

How about you just don't download any Bank apps on your smartphone because all the phones are made in a foreign country anyways and Google can't stay out of your business.... And they're probably an overseas company also

Yep know exactly about this there are tons of people in the gaming community that I know of that make hundreds of thousands off this they pay hire people to call called (callers) and they read off social engineering scrips then the next step is if they manage to trick the provider normally metro or tmobile they then have another person called a (holder) put the sim card into the phone where they then begin to take the assets. Both the caller and the holder make a small percentage of the money but the main person who always finds the targets or buys "targs" is what they call them makes tons of money and they flex it on the internet...

this has nothing to with outsourcing to other countries, it's a problem with mobile networks not having sufficient security and important accounts, like online banking relying on codes in text messages for authentication despite it not being secure
Any clown can buy a T-Mobile (or other provider) stingray and get between you and a legitimate cell phone tower to intercept your cellphone info, unfortunately.

You should avoid using Text Message codes for your 2FA for this exact reason, using the QR codes that generate a code in an app on your device is how you want to do it. Authly, Google Authenticator, etc... This is really the only way to protect your accounts in the event you get a sim swap attack.

In my country you can only swap or replace your sim by visiting mobile carrier center and it done via a kiosk. You enter your mobile number, place in your ID and thumbprint, if it match then you can proceed

I had a similar issue, being someone who knows a bit about technology I never use my phone to check my bank, 401K, or anything with sensitive data. Always use Ubuntu that I run out of a floppy disk and always, always use wired internet since wireless is still very easy to hack.

What are phone carriers doing!! Well they are eventually moving over to embedded esim’s will it stop fraud 100% no but it will slow it down, you can’t stop it because you’d have to have the mobile workers ID customers 100% of the time when doing sim swaps or device swaps.

banking apps have nothing to do with this fraud, it involves transferring the phone number to a new SIM, so that the criminals can receive those texts with a code to log in to important accounts like online banking and the like. in fact, banking apps can help stop this kind of fraud by providing an alternative way to prove you have the device involving the app like approving a notification or using the app to get a code, this scam doesn't involve installing any malware on the phone or anything

downloading a banking app does not increase your vulnerability to this scam whatsoever, it's to get hold of those codes texted to you to log into accounts like online banking - in fact, using a banking app can make you less vulnerable to this scam as you can in some cases verify yourself using the app instead of getting a code texted to you, the phone itself is not in any way hacked or compromised by this scam

Yep know exactly about this there are tons of people in the gaming community that I know of that make hundreds of thousands off this they pay hire people to call called (callers) and they read off social engineering scrips then the next step is if they manage to trick the provider normally metro or tmobile they then have another person called a (holder) put the sim card into the phone where they then begin to take the assets. Both the caller and the holder make a small percentage of the money but the main person who always finds the targets or buys "targs" is what they call them makes tons of money and they flex it on the internet...
I recommend putting 2fa up on everything to protect your selves

those codes in text messages are 2 factor verification, but not a very secure method, this scam is to circumvent 2 factor authentication, so you should use a more secure method wherever possible, such as approving a notification or generating a code from an authentication app

this has nothing to with outsourcing to other countries, it's a problem with mobile networks not having sufficient security and important accounts, like online banking relying on codes in text messages for authentication despite it not being secure

banking on your phone doesn't make you vulnerable to this scam, it's done to get those codes texted to you to log into accounts like online banking
the phone itself and its software is not compromised and using a banking app can in some cases make this scam more difficult, as you can use the app to verify yourself instead of getting a code texted to you. the only way to be 100% safe from this scam is move to a desert island and use no online services at all, is that really a worthwhile trade off?

Ultimately...perhaps the only logical way to ensure digital security for everyone on Earth is to eliminate national currencies and instead have a global, centralized bank with a single, digital currency for all nations. Then additionally, assign a unique numerical identification for everyone so that all transactions are centrally controlled and always uniquely identified by the person's numerical identification being attached to every transaction. However, the only way to make this secure is to have the identification be a physical part of each person, thus guaranteeing that it is the actual person making the transaction. This could be accomplished by inserting microchips into people's hands, replacing cash and credit cards as the method for financial transactions. This has been happening in Sweden for years now as people are having chips implanted into their hands and using that for all financial transactions. If this became global and required by legal agreement between all nations, this could create a much more secure form of finance. However...the creepy part is that this very much lines up with the prophecy in the Biblical book of Revelation, chapter 13, verses 16-18...
