    THIS DAMN TOWN (LYRICS)
I didn't know where to go
Didn’t know what I should see
    So I left town
As soon as you left me
    Tried to find myself
    Down in Tennessee
    But you got away
    With the best of me
But now I do my best
    And I'm barely getting by
    This damn town never sleeps
    Keeps me runnin' every night
And now I do my best
    And I’m barely getting by
    This damn town never sleeps
    Keeps me runnin' every night
Thought I'd get by on my own
Thought I'd be what I want to be
    Until you opened my eyes
    And you made me see
    I'll just play these cards
'til my time and money's gone
    And I'll leave this world
    With some simple songs
But now I do my best
    And I’m barely getting by
    This damn town never sleeps
    Keeps me runnin’ every night
And now I do my best
    And I'm barely getting by
    This damn town never sleeps
    Keeps me runnin’ every night
An Ohio singer/songwriter with a soulful, rootsy blend of country, rock, and folk, Arlo McKinley debuted in 2014 with his self-titled album. In 2020, he came to wider public attention with Die Midwestern, released on the late John Prine's Oh Boy label. Two years later, he issued This Mess We're In.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, McKinley first began singing at age eight in the choir at his family's Baptist church. Growing up, he imbibed his Kentucky-born father's LPs, listening to artists like Hank Williams and George Jones, as well as Bob Dylan, Otis Redding, and Van Morrison. By his teens, he was playing guitar and singing in punk bands. However, in his twenties he began writing his own songs, gravitating toward rootsy country and soul sounds, mixing it with his varied rock influences. A troubled period involving drugs waylaid his career and found him moving away from music. For several years, he drove a truck delivering tuxedos between Cincinnati and Detroit. He eventually returned to songwriting and in 2014 released his debut album, Arlo McKinley & the Lonesome Sound. Hitting the road, he gained wider attention touring alongside roots luminaries like Tyler Childers, John Moreland, Jason Isbell, and Justin Townes Earle. In March 2020, he became the final artist signed by legendary singer/songwriter John Prine's Oh Boy Records label just before Prine's death that April. In August 2020, McKinley released his sophomore album and Oh Boy debut, Die Midwestern, recorded at Sam Phillips Recording Studio with Grammy-winning producer Matt Ross-Spang. 2022 saw the release of McKinley's third long-player, the inward-looking This Mess We're In.

I can relate to this song. I ran far away from my hometown, the only place I knew after my heart and soul was ripped out of my chest and oddly enough I ended up in Tennessee. When I got here almost 3 years ago I was an absolute trainwreck, but I was slowly able to pick myself up and rebuild my life. I look back now and I'm thankful that I ran far away from that heartache, because I wouldn't be where and who I am today. The pain taught me that nobody is worth losing yourself over and that if someone is putting you through that much pain, they don't deserve you.

Don’t change brother. This is what today’s “country” music needs. Genuine artists like you.

Why am I just now finding out who this artist is? His vocals are singing a very similar life I've endured. Very heart felt. Definitely gonna check out his other "simple songs"

My dad passed away half a year ago and we often used to ride around in the car and just listen to music because that kind of was how we communicated. I listened to his voice memos today for the first time since his passing. And i listened to his music stick too and that's where i found this beautiful song. Thank you for making this. It has so many emotions and moves so many people<3

This reminds me of a certain time in my life. I was smoking crack by the river and drawing pictures of turtles.

Every time I drive threw Elmira my birth town reminds me of everything from addiction to my 3 years of alcoholism crack and coke and what ever I felt like taking that day and looking back at it. I'm glad I'm clean and out of NY. Hitched all the way to Florida. Never been on a train till then. And seeing the stars and the sounds of the tracks is calming when your going threw withdraws
