Hi Mandy. This video brought tears to my eyes with the Watergate Salad. In my home it’s known as Pistachio Salad. I would make this every year for Thanksgiving, without the added nuts. My son who was 26yrs old, passed away in 2021 from Covid. He loved his mamas pistachio salad .That’s what he would ask for. This past Thanksgiving was one of the first times I was able to make it again as it was too hard to make without him being here. Well today has been a rough day, and I clicked on your video and it was like he was reminding me he was right here with me. Thank you for sharing this recipe.
My son passed away this past October after a three year battle with cancer. He would have been 45 in October. This was one of his favorite salads. I made it for Easter and Father’s Day. I have make for potlucks and always come home with an empty bowl.i always make it with chopped pecans.
Hey Mandy and Steven, I wanted to tell you that adding maraschino cherries are really good in the Watergate salad. It has been in my family for years and some people have put the whole container of cool whip in the bowl and letting it set for overnight makes it really thick and delicous. And if you make the pudding like the package directions, and drain the pineapple, makes it thick like pudding but better with all the ingredients. I love to watch ya'll and I'm glad you are making healthy recipes because I have heart disease and have to cook healthy. Take care.
Love the 70s! Graduated HS in 76! Can't beat the music - withstands the test of time! Dancing was crazy! 😁 Absolutely LOVE Watergate salad/Pistachio Salad. Great in the summer and the holidays! Geez, now I want some! Lol
Mine too!!!! I don't love it I don't hate it and I'll eat it.... basically just like Mandy said. But yeah Thanksgiving and Christmas we always have it and even at Easter!!!!
Hello Mandy and Steven I hope y’all are having a nice beginning of your weekend. God bless you two and your son. Could you please tell me what size your large skillet is. ❤ Did the recipe actually say to use chicken thighs? Just curious.
I’m a 60’s baby so I grew up with 70’s recipes! My Mom was a pretty good cook. I’ve saved a few of her handwritten recipes and I’m going to display them in a shadow box along with some of her cooking utensils. She got her angel wings in 2017. Thanks for sharing the recipes! ❤❤
Watergate salad was a staple in every church dinner I ever attended as a young adult! I'm gonna have to give that a go sometime very soon....ahhhh, memories!
My grandma called it 'pistachio delight'. (my favorite) She would "jazz it up" occasionally with some coconut and / or maraschino cherries sliced up. Just to make it more festive. ❤😊❤❤
I love Watergate salad!! I make it for all the holidays, and alot during the summer. As a "70's" kid (I was born in '75) this was a staple in our house growing up.
Love Steven’s description of the pasta dish! I’ve made and ate Watergate salad and love it! I always use chopped pecans or chopped pistachios in it, no peanuts. ❤
I graduated in 1974 so the 70's was a favorite time of mine. Watergate salad was served Thanksgiving and/or Christmas and I still make it today. We always added chopped maraschino cherries to it. Makes it really colorful.
I was born in 63, loved the 70’s. Hands down, Watergate Salad is in my top five deserts. Also, being a former Marine, I love General Tso’s Chicken and Rice. Awesome video y’all. 🙌🏻
Best husband award goes to Steven hands down. I was born in 1961 and I remember all the fabulous restaurants that were around in the 70s that were far superior to what we have today
My grandma used to make watergate salad all the time when I was a kid, and she was alive. I like it because it's light and not so heavy. I'm a May 70's baby too!
I was a young bride in the 70’s and always volunteered to bring the “pink stuff “ to dinners because it was easy to make. Same recipe, except cherry Jello, cherry pie filling and always toasted pecans!
Our favorite recipe from the seventies is the Seven Layer Overnight Salad. I have made it over and over again and have made many variations of it, it is classic!
@ This is my mother-in-law's recipe. She recommended making the layers a day in advance, putting the salad in the fridge, and tossing it right before serving - hence the name she gave it "24 Hour Salad." Starting from the bottom - one layer of each of the following ingredients: 1 head chopped iceberg lettuce 1 cup chopped onions and green peppers 1 head chopped califlower 1 or 2 thinly sliced cucumbers 1 cup mayonaise mixed with 1 tablespoon of sugar 1 - 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 10 slices of bacon fried and cut into small pieces Add or subtract ingredients to taste and preference. - the key is the mayonaise and sugar mixture.
I’m a boomer from the 60’s and graduated in the 70’s. Watergate salad is the bomb. I love pistachios so I had it every so often. Pasta Primavera was always in rotation with fresh veggies. Yum and use butter when cooking the veggies, adds flavor!
I’m a 70’s gal. Our whole family has made Watergate Salad since the 70’s. We use it as a side dish. I just made it this past Thanksgiving! Thanks for the memories!
I was born in '77 and my hubby in '72 however somehow we both have never tried Watergate salad. Next trip to the store I'm picking up the ingredients. I love how you two work together in the kitchen. Some of my favorite time in the kitchen is when my husband is on salad detail or even when he is unloading the dishwasher. During which we just talk about our days and anything on our minds. Truly enjoy your videos! God bless!
NEW UPDATE!! My hubby had a rotator cuff replacement and complete shoulder replacement on Tuesday. I didn't get the best news from the surgeon at my appointment. I need a big miracle from God. My Crohn's is more severe than we thought. Please continue to pray for us. Thank you in advance. God Bless.
I'm very happy that your husband's surgery went well. Keep me informed about his recovery. I hate that you're not doing well. That's a very difficult disease. I had a good friend who has this, and it runs in my ex-husbands family. I will always keep praying for you and your family ❤
Praying for you both. I am also Crohn's disease sufferer. I have had it since 1984. You can go through remission but, there is no cure. I am sorry to hear yours is more severe. Mine comes and goes. This week I had many Crohn's attacks or episodes. I have been miserable. I am living off of Imodium AD and a liquid diet. Please pray for me too.
I'm 73 years old. Watergate salad has been on our holiday tables as long as I can remember. We love it. So easy to make. Kids really enjoy it. It certainly is not a new thing- is in the same category with Tang!😅
Our kids were born in 1977 and 1980 and we made Watergate salad on a regular basis. It was a popular dish.❤ We have the full Better Homes and Garden Cookbook from the early 1970’s. We were married in 1973. There are many favorite recipes that were made over and over. Lots of cooking from scratch for decades. Thanks for your videos.
I was born in 65 and have had Watergate salad. My mom made it a few times but settled back to fruit salad with miracle whip, mini marshmallows can of mixed fruit drained and pecans. We had that cookie book, too.
Watergate Salad was invented and served at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C. It’s also where the famous break in happened which resulted in the “Watergate Scandal.”
Watergate Salad was neither invented nor ever served at the Watergate Hotel. Why do you make things up? They also don't serve spam, cheez whiz, deep-fried pickles, corn dogs, or anything with the word "roll-up" in its name. It's a high end place, not a trailer park.
My children were born '67, '72, & '73... so have enjoyed all of your lovely dishes from the 50's, 60's and 70's! All very good indeed! Blessings Kiddos!🌿💚👵
Love Watergate Salad! My mom always made it around Christmas time. When I make it I add coconut flakes. Then one day I piled it into a graham cracker pie shell. Added more cool whip on top with a ton of maraschino cherries. Call it Watergate Pie.
Good evening Mandy and Steven and thank you for sharing your yummy meals my favorite is the Watergate salad and Mandy you can change the pudding and the canned fruit and you can use the fruity marshmallows
I grew up in the 70's and wow the memories you just brought back. To spice up your General Tso's chicken you can add a Thai chili in. Thanks for the great video
Pam here ….the Watergate salad was always called Pistachio Fluff. Sometimes made with ‘set’ lime jello that you cut in small chunks and mixed in. we used chopped walnuts. Best to just put one kind of nuts in. Another great dessert to make with Pistachio Pudding is the Torte. You make a ‘shortbread crust’. Then a layer of cream cheese/powdered sugar/ cool whip? Then the pistachio pudding mixed with cool whip, then a frosting layer of cool whip. My mom had several variations of the “shortbread/cream cheese layered torte. Banana cream was one. Peach Melba was the bomb..which you used fresh sliced peaches in a mixure that included peach jello and cool whip?? That was was by far the best. The pistachio one is served a lot in my location for St. Paddy’s day and is often called “Irish Cloud”, it is so good if the baker knows how to make the shortbread crust. General Tao’s, is my hubby’s favorite dish to get locally from Chinese. We need to start making our selves…I think we can do much better! Saving that recipe FOR SURE. Wish there was a way to make up that sauce by the QUART and Freeze or can it!! It is yummy!
I graduated from High School in 1975 so that era has wonderful memories for me. I remember my Mom making lots of different Jello recipies and putting them in special molds. It was a thing back then.
Y’all just made me feel old. I graduated from high school in 1983. My husband graduated in 1978. So, Mandy, I’m almost old enough to be your momma. Something that I must say I’d be so proud of. I absolutely adore you guys and so enjoy seeing how happy you and your family are and how much you love each other. You feel like family to me. The “Watergate Salad”, I can’t even imagine eating a whole recipe of it in a day.
I can’t imagine eating a whole one now. In my 20’s, I consumed the entire thing by myself more than once and in 1 days time. At 59, wisdom may prevail and I wouldn’t even try to eat a whole batch in a day. There are 3 things that draw me to you; your love of good, healthy food and cooking for your family, your love for each other and your love for the Lord as a family. I can watch your videos and smile all the way through them. You are uplifting, encouraging and inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home and your happiness, your joyful and loving family dynamic and most of all your deep and abiding faith in God.
I make this Watergate salad all the time during the summer. It is great for picnics or BBG’s as a side. My kids loved it instead of potato salad or macaroni salad. Very refreshing good and cold. ❤️
OMGosh! My husband and I were DYING watching Stevens reaction to the Watergate salad! I was laughing so hard that the tears were literally running down my face! Thx for the best laugh of the day! Nope, I’m not a fan of the dish because I don’t like marshmallows but I do love General Tao’s! Fondue has never gone out of style in our house and I still love making it for parties. Love to all!
I'm 57 (1967.) I made this for Thanksgiving for the kids. After dinner, I looked and my 1st baby, nephew Kevin( 42), had a bowl full! He took the leftovers home. So much for the Littles. I've always enjoyed this. It ranks with a million "Fluff" recipes on Pinterest. It is nice and light. You ate the bowl full Mandy! The Pasta Primavera is a nice Meatless Monday.
My mother always aked me as a teen and young mother what I wanted for my personal request dish at Christmas dinner.I always said her fruit salad! She put in every fruit that you can think of,and pecans and whipped cream - marvelous! And she cut them all up by hand!I graduated in 1978,married in 1979,and had my son in 1980.I miss you Mama!
I was a child of the 70's. My mom and grandmother used to make the Watergate salad and also Ambrosia salad, which is similar. I actually couldn't stand it! 😂
I remember the 70's very well. Great times. On a side note, I had a slow cooker working on chili while I was at the job today. Came home, had a bowl, and after I finished it my mind said, "I think that's a go-backer." I cracked up. 🤣 Be well and stay safe all.
Watching this while you struggled with sound ect. I thought i might share my motto, that helped me deal with hubs 22yr military career as well as raise 3 kids. "Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not break." I love your sense of humor in cooking and with each other. You're a joy to watch.
I graduated high school in '72, got married in '75 and had our 1st child May 13th of '79. The only one of these I recall in the '70's is the Watergate Salad. I have never made it but I think I have eaten it. I enjoyed your video. ❤
I just can't get over how slim Steven has gotten! I skipped over the video because I didn't recognize him on the thumb nail. I'm glad I finally realized it was him. Great job Steven! The recipes look great. I will add some Alfredo sauce to the pasta dish. ❤
Born in 63. That Cookie Cookbook you received is the Best! I bought my copy new when it came out and still have it today❤. You will love the recipes from that book. Watergate Salad is delicious. You can swap the pudding mix to other flavors you like and make different colored versions all year long😊. Thanks for a great video and bringing back memories from my youth. 🙌
I was born in the early 70's and my grandmother (Nana) always made Watergate salad with our Thanksgiving meal. My mother carried on the tradition when she took over Thanksgiving duties. Now, I make it every year. It's one of my favorite desserts. My brother and I call it Nana salad.
I’m so sorry to hear that Mandy! Prayers for you! You’re one of my favorite people on YT. I love your smile. Keep your spirits up. Much love.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I’ve made Watergate Salad since the 70’s and still do my families request this every Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. So I’ve been made it for almost 50 years. My old recipe calls for chopped pecans, so I also add chopped pecans
Here’s a similar version of the Watergate salad. I’ve had the Watergate salad (born in 72) but I prefer this instead: 1 of the larger boxes of instant lemon pudding mix (or 2 of the small ones), a large can (28oz) of crushed pineapple and a small cool whip. Mix the pudding and crushed pineapple together then mix in the entire coolwhip container. Let it set up for about an hour. It’s way better!!!!
My Grandmother used to make the pistachio pudding fruit salad all the time. I loved it as a kid and it I dont make it often but when I do, it brings back many happy memories of my grandmother.
Hey Mandy. I hail from the 70s (1971). My mom aways made a simple fruit cobbler- usually peach but also cherry, blueberry, or other- we called it cup a cup a cup... cause that's how she taught it to us. Preheat oven to 350. 1/2 stick butter melted in bottom of 9x13 dish. (Can melt while oven heats) Cup of flour (add baking pwdr & salt if not using self rising) Cup of sugar (or 3/4 if fruit is really sweat) 1/2 tsp salt Cup of milk 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla Mix and pour over melted butter. Spoon canned fruit or pie filling on top. Bake 45-50 mins @ 350. Have the vanilla ice cream on hand and enjoy.
I was born in 1970 and grew up eating Watergate salad. I love it! I have not made it in a very long time so I will have to do that soon!!!! Thank you for the throwback! ❤😊
We do Watergate salad a lot. Travels well, it is refreshing for summer cookouts and picnics, just keep cold. I am a first time watcher so I will be back. Oh by the way I was married in 1979.
Your comment about expecting it to be a cold dish was exactly what I was thinking. I'd serve it cold for dinner during the summer. Light and refreshing.
I remember making “Watergate Cake” in the 70’s, it was a favorite in my house. I had forgotten all about it, now I want to make one. I still to this day make a pasta primavera, but we use grilled, marinated chicken breast for the protein, and feta cheese instead of parmesan cheese. I copied the recipe from a popular restaurant in north central West Virginia. It’s a favorite as well. We love it!

Love water gate salad. Have it every Easter, and New Years.
Enjoyed the vintage series!!!!! Brought back memories. I was a teen in the 70’s.
I wss born in September of 58. so i.was teenagers in the 70's. I love the. Watergate salad i graduated from high school in 78 i love this
1957 here, many memories from the '70's.I graduated in 1975.
Congealed salads, either with gelatin or pudding, were all the rage in the 70s, along with fondue, which I loved as a kid!
I graduated from High School in 1975 so that era has wonderful memories for me. I remember my Mom making lots of different Jello recipies and putting them in special molds. It was a thing back then.
I graduated in 1978 I have to agree the 70s was a great time to be a teenager.
Mom included Watergate Salad into our dinner rotation once a month. It's quick, easy, and everyone loved it!
Can’t go wrong with the 70’s recipes, so good! Thanks Mandy for sharing these!
Preteen through teenage years in the 70s. Yes! A lot of memories.
I remember the 70's very well. Great times. On a side note, I had a slow cooker working on chili while I was at the job today. Came home, had a bowl, and after I finished it my mind said, "I think that's a go-backer." I cracked up. 🤣 Be well and stay safe all.
What I love the most about the Watergate salad is that yummy almond flavoring taste!
I look forward to every Mandy in the Making video. I can't wait to see what 70's recipes you have for us today.
I make Watergate saled for every family get to gather on my husband's side.... everyone loves it
I love Watergate Salad, both original and bumped up with shredded coconut❤❤❤
Me too. We had it our reunions in the summer.
Pasta Primavera was a dish I made a few times a month when my kids were little. It was a good way of getting kids to eat veggies.
Watergate salad is our holiday staple. Family loves it. ❤
Here’s a similar version of the Watergate salad. I’ve had the Watergate salad (born in 72) but I prefer this instead:
1 of the larger boxes of instant lemon pudding mix (or 2 of the small ones), a large can (28oz) of crushed pineapple and a small cool whip.
I was born in the 60’s and the 70’s was my best time! I had bell bottom’s and big hair! ❤
(Can melt while oven heats)
Cup of flour (add baking pwdr & salt if not using self rising)
Cup of sugar (or 3/4 if fruit is really sweat)
1/2 tsp salt
Cup of milk
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
Mix and pour over melted butter.
Love Watergate salad!
Graduated HS in 1976; all of these dishes are familiar and loved.
We love it!
