Son of Frankenstein - the last great Frankenstein movie until Abbott and Costello would meet the iconic horror trio.
Oh, and the color footage of Karloff in monster makeup was taken by his then wife Dorothy and was part of home movies that included footage of Sara Karloff being brought home from the hospital. Also, Karloff hated that jersey that he described as "fur and muck."
Even when I don't feel it, Doc reminds me why horror movies are healing. Thanks.
we need a son of doctor wolfula
Son of Frankenstein is probably the most iconic movie in the franchise because it has the most recognisable elements like Igor, I watched it a couple of years ago and I liked more than I expected to. The Ghost of Frankenstein is cheesy fun with an really goofy ending
It's not buddy.
Coming from somebody whose favorite movie in the franchise is this one, to say that it’s more iconic than the first movie just because ygor is in it is just wrong
How is it "the most iconic" when 9 out 10 people don't even know it exists?
The "its alive" scene from the original film is one of the most iconic scenes in ALL of film (to the point its still referenced and parodied almost 100 years later). There is no comparison.
I think the inclusion of Bela Lugosi and Lionel Atwill in this movie, really elevate it, and make it so memorable
I'm conviced Gene Wilder was just channelling Basil for Young Frankenstein
Definitely. Young Frankenstein is more or less a remake of Son of Frankenstein.
That box shaped head reminds me of an early version of the Kid-N- Play box you can land a helicopter on top of that flat top😂
The fact that Igor is called a "body snatcher" could be a reference to the Robert Louis Stevenson story The Bodysnatcher that was inspired by the crimes of the graverobbers and murderers Burke and Hare.
Could be.
Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff would later appear together in a film adaptation of THE BODY SNATCHER (1945).
When I think of the name "Igor," I think of the Igors and Igorinas in Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld books.
"I, IGOR, WILL LIVE FOREVER!"
I always thought Lon Chaney Jr looked bloated and weird as the monster. As great as LCJ was in his other roles, Karloff will always be the best version of Frankenstein’s Monster. “Ghost of Frankenstein f****** sucks!” 😂 Another great review.
These are my favorite reviews of the Universal Monster movies since James Rolfe's
"It's cineamassacre's monster madness"
Ghost of Frankenstein is when Universal stopped trying to pretend they know how brains work.
Inspector Krogh was my favorite character. It is interesting how Bela Lugosi refused to play the Frankenstein monster and yet has been appeared in two of the films.
Lugosi didn’t want to play a character with no voice. He ended up playing the monster much later when he thought the mister would speak
"To the Lumberyard!"
Yes,intriguing and kind of sad.
Bela Lugosi appeared in four of the original Universal FRANKENSTEIN films, just like Boris Karloff.
would love to see you review Young Frankenstein
I think bits & pieces of this film were the inspiration for Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstein."
In the book, the monster chooses the name Adam Frankenstein.
So, his name is Frankenstein.
Good to know.
I actually think ‘Son of Frankenstein’ is my second favourite just below ‘Bride of Frankenstein’. It’s a tad long but all the elements of the story felt original and so traditionally gothic horror in a way I love.
I do love the original but it feels more like a blueprint for the ones to come.
Bambi went from deer to deerhunter
I heard Dr. Wolfula made his own Frankenstein mobster in his basement.
"MYEEAARRGGHH, see?"
Hahahaha that was funny
I wish for an installment where Igor/Frankenstein rules the world from his Conan-throne.
With Son of Frankenstein, the monster's presence started to get less screen time and make him more of an unstoppable killing machine as opposed to the first two movies where there was depth in his character. In the last Universal monster cycle, the monster shows up in the last 5 minutes just to be "destroyed" before the credits role on the screen.
Universal needs to make a new Frankenstein movie that takes place between Bride and Son.
honestly this would be really fucking funny and would completely justifying itself because of how out there it is
I had the good fortune of seeing this film in the theater on a really nice print.
The good doctor knows his horror movies.
Basil Rathbone is fantastic as Baron Wolf Von Frankenstein. 😀👍
Thanks. I have to say, "son" is really it's own creature, (pun intended), but I agree about the cast. Atwill, rathbone, and Bela was the cherry on top. ❤ and go team GHOULASH!! 😊
Possibly the first time Bela was ever described as a cherry.
@oliverbrownlow5615 😄😄😄, wanna see something odd? Lookup images of "bela lugosi as jesus" from his theater days,
I never would have wanted to watch this movie without your review. The name Son of Frankenstein is hard to take seriously.
Over a thousand views in an hour! Way to go Doc!

Much like Frankenstein is technically "Frankenstein's Monster", did you know "hanged" is the proper word and NOT the past tense "hung".
Every time I think of Igor… I think of Eyegore from Young Frankenstein… Mel Brooks at his greatest
The British print of Son of Frankenstein is available on the Frankenstein package blu ray. Oddly enough, the extra footage isn't mentioned anywhere! It's a short scene taking place in the secret passage where Ygor beckons the Monster. The Monster lurches forward and we cut to the usual scene of a pillar opening up and Ygor emerging and gestures for the Monster to follow.
His work done, Wolf returned to his home planet.
"The Village was called Frankenstein? Little on the nose don't you think?" ha ha... yes, on the nose that the village shares a name with the Baron VON Frankenstein. I get that was a joke, but, eh. Still great reviews as always, Doc! (Also, no... but Ygor can't be tried for crimes related that crime, it's a superstition akin to if you couldn't kill someone by the third hanging attempt clearly god didn't intend for them to be hung you see in some older westerns)
I have seen Young Frankenstein several times so I always wondered *which* classic Frankenstein film the one-armed inspector it parodies came from. Now I know.
26:30 - Are they saying Frankenstein must be destroyed??
Cedric Hardwick is fantastic as Ludwig Frankenstein. 😀👍
Son of Frankenstein was a surprisingly good sequel. Karloff as the Monster! Lugosi as Ygor! Rathbone as the son of Frankenstein! I thought everything went well with this sequel. Lugosi is the best part of the film for me! A good sequel indeed. Just...not AS GOOD as Bride. Personally, Bride of Frankenstein is my favorite sequel! As for Ghost of Frankenstein....it's fine. I can see why most people would hate it, there's not really much going on here. And the performances by everyone, including Lugosi, do seem a bit dull. As if, everyone was tired and just wanted to finish this shit and go home. Although, I HAVE TO SAY! The scene where the Monster breaks from it's chains and scares everyone in the courtroom and starts running away, but Ludwing is just standing there facing the Monster head on, showing his not afraid. Even though this is the first time he's seeing the Monster in person. That scene was badass! Not gonna lie! And this is coming from a 1940 film! I have to give the film points for that! Other than that, yeah, it's one of the weakest sequels sadly. But personally, I still found the film pretty decent. Once again, Bride of Frankenstein is the best sequel! If they got James Whales for the others, they would have turn out a lot better. Especially Ghost of Frankenstein.
I’ve loved this years JUNE-IVERSAL horror month doc! Lots of great vids! Thanks so much for all the hard work!❤
A FANTASTIC review! I love learning about the 1930s -1950s era of horror! Every iteration of Frankenstein's monster is a little different from the next.
I know its early but this makes me excited for AHHH-ctober. One of the best things about the Fall. Thanks Doc for the consistent videos.
This is how I found out what movie MF DOOM sampled
Ghost is an entertaining B-movie as are all the mash ups that followed. I particularly enjoy House of Frankenstein, a true guilty pleasure
Wow Doc thank you!!! I needed a video from you and this one is incredible!!! How in depth you go is outstanding. Thank you sir.
That Mengele joke was savage.
22:10 Ironic due to He Fought Errol Flynn indeed too.
Hi there Doctor Wolfula. Love your review of this film and its sequel. I feel like The Ghost of Frankenstein could have been better. In the original screenplay, Wolf von Frankenstein would have been in exile after the events of the last film. He would have moved to Vasaria where he runs a sanitarium. Ygor makes a pack with Wolf's new hunchbacked assistant , Theodore, and then organizes with all of the other disabled people in the area to try and take over the town with the Monster leading the charge. During the riot, the entire police force is killed. For the final coup de grace, Ygor convinces Theodore to have his brain transplanted into the Monster. Wolf had been planning to give the Monster a new, intelligent brain, and Theodore switches the brain with that of Ygor's at the last second. Wolf finds out and tries to correct his mistake, he is thrown into the electrical grid. This not only kills Wolf, but causes a chain reaction that kills the entire cast. Alternate titles for this film range from The Secret of Frankenstein, The Daughter of Frankenstein, as well as Destiny and There is Always Tomorrow.
Ygor stealing the show in this review haha 🎃🕯🐈⬛
4:46 Karloff Also went onto Frankenstein 1970 As Well.
Not to mention MAD MONSTER PARTY? (1967)

I waited three days to watch this to have something to do when I was bored. I am not disappoint.
Son of Frankenstein is an old film Frankenstein is a character who is more than a century old Frankenstein is A Cindmatic icon
You're really good at these movie review/analysis videos, very interesting, great personal opinions, well researched, funny as fuck, and great production style.
I loved the German expressionist sets on this film
These reviews have been outstanding! Not that the rest aren't!
I think Igor was Bela Lugosi's best role.
Not often the third movie in a franchise is arguably the best one, Son Of kicks ass
11:25 And Why Stand right by an Active Dart Board ?
its been my dream since I got into oldschool horror to have a company, have a big family, and destroy it all with spite and poor management
Thank God for this channel, I feel better knowing I’m in for some laughs 😂
Review the other old Frankenstein movies next please?
3:01 tf, is this Brendon Fraser???
Yeah it's from Gods & Monsters. It's about James Wale in his past years

Ghost of Frankenstein is that bad there are worse Frankenstein movies out there but I will agree that it is a step down from son of Frankenstein but at least ghost of Frankenstein is saved by the ending
"Ghost of Frankenstein" is so forgettable that I had to watch the footage you showed to realize I HAD seen it.
❤❤
FIRST! I’ve never been first before. Also, I will always call the monster Frankenstein. The fucks who can’t take it need to eat it.
Good movies made better by Young Frankenstein.
