    This video shows the repair and re-coating in grey of a fibreglass roof in London. A section of the fibreglass has delaminated due to a fault in the original installation. As a result the top coat also failed in places. The fibreglass was repaired and the top gel coat reapplied. Enjoy.

    If you did a job like that up north with car repair kits and diy gear, you would starve. I got the impression this is your first time with grp. Try reading the book again specially the technical bits about "CLEANING" MIXING" and "LAYING UP" and how to do it correctly. I'm sure in time with a bit practice you could get it right.
    I have been doing this for a very long time with flat and pent roofs, also repairing sea going fishing boats. I do have an idea how it's done.

    If that rood does not peel within in a year or two id be stunned. Never seen GRP roofers work in this way. Not enough tacks in trim, not enough resin used, didnt notice a paddle roller, no additional coat or two of resin before top coat applied i could go on

    Looking at what your chipping off......... apart from the edges of about 6 inches up to the roof edge. That looks far too thin, there can’t be any fibreglass mat on that roof, it looks like the centre of that roof only has topcoat straight onto the plywood. (You weren’t chipping up fibreglass mat-were you) ? Or is it possibly 1 layer of 1 oz mat. Very odd.
    What the hell are you using to laminate the fibreglass mat on the edge trim ?
    Goggles every time measuring and mixing the Catalyst.
    Sorry to say it, but just putting another thin coat of float-coat over the whole roof will not fix that roof problem.
    A waste of time and someone’s money.

    • @darrenthebuilder
      @darrenthebuilder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don’t be too quick to judge the thickness of.a product from a TH-cam video. The roof does have fibreglass mat. My job was just to reapply a top coat (uv gel).
      The fibreglass Mat underneath was fine except that small area on the front.

    • @darrenthebuilder
      @darrenthebuilder  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi the resin is the most important part. It’s what creates the waterproof barrier. Pin holes won’t be solved by the top coat. If you’ve got pin holes it may be better to sand them down and apply a think resin to fill the holes.

  • @barrymctrustery5715

    By looks of roof it was a ply base substructure which fiberglass is not happy to adhere to unless sanded before fiberglassing and also if damp it will also not adhere to , OSB 3 is best for the roof decking. Also you did not put fiberglass matting over places where you scrapped off the smaller areas where it had delaminated which you should have before using the gel coat on top.

    • @darrenthebuilder
      @darrenthebuilder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn’t construct the original roof. The other areas scraped was only gel coat and hadn’t delaminated

    • @barrymctrustery5715
      @barrymctrustery5715 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darrenthebuilder I did realise you were only repairing the roof but this is a common fault were people use ply . Ply need to to be well sanded before applying GRP as it will delaminate as this roof is doing , OSB3 is far better . You did leave patches that you should of keyed back and applied CSM then topcoat over as will fail later .

    • @aha2551
      @aha2551 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes @darren, - I would have sanded all the bare bits & applied more matting- even though the CSM was still intact in those places-- however I'm fussy & never want to be called back & realise it was my fault 😅-- & have to charge accordingly -- it all depends on how much ££'s was negotiated with the customer as to how much they wanted to spend on a repair --- it may be effective to do it well, like he did it, as quickly as possible, & factor in to the client to call him back in a 2-3 of years to sand & apply another top coat!-- what do you think?

    I’m not sure who has taught you this but , where the gel coat had lifted fron trim where you did repair the raised trim was not nailed down properly , the gelcoat you fibreglass repaired onto was not power sanded what won’t last more than a year , the roof needs to be power Sanding back to fibreglass even then I would re fibreglass all roof , rubbing a-bit of acetone on gel does nothing I can assure you, fibreglass roofs don’t peel the gel because they not been sanded , soon as the styrene has released from fibreglass roof and Are fully cured it can be gelcoat we sand them to take off burrs and and rough edges , I will assure the roof you repaired in years to come will look alot worse than It did before you started it 😂😂 hope you take my advice on board it’s not a dig at you if you even need help or advice message me

    • @veeb6970

      It said he sanded the whole roof. It wasn’t because of the raised trim, it was because of the poor prep prior to him repairing it. No adhesion to the substrate.

      You need to sand all of the top coat off ! Not like he has done this is wrong , it will peal off again - use a belt sander not a orbital one

    • @darrenthebuilder
      @darrenthebuilder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Cure it’s manual states that you can clean, abrade and recast topcoats. Abrade means to key. There is no requirement to sand back to the laminate and it’s impossible with out removing some of the laminate itself, therefore weakening the roof and possible revealing pinholes.

    • @darrenthebuilder
      @darrenthebuilder  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peeling usually occurs when the topcoat is applied too thick.
