    VIDEO SUMMARY:
    ------
We are living in a society of ridiculous response times and less than efficient productivity. There are only two things you need to do to 10x your productivity. Yes, only TWO things!
Before we get into that, if I were to ask you a simple question, what is the time that you were most productive in your life in terms of the amount that you learned and the amount that you got done?
For almost everyone it was probably school. During that time you learned so much and you got so much done because you had a SINGULAR FOCUS. When you were learning math, you weren't learning science. When you were learning art, you weren't learning English. You had one class and one thing that you were focusing on and one thing that you were getting done.
As I'm talking to you about this, I can hear you through the screen saying, "Scott. I can't possibly be like that. I've got tasks, projects and programs. I've got proposals, emails and texts. I've got phone calls, meetings and reports. I've got all these different things that I need to do and they all need to get done RIGHT NOW!”
Take a deep breath (I will take one too), but you need to think along the lines of blocking and chunking your time and removing distractions. If you're able to do this, it will have a massive impact on your productivity. If you've read any of the latest neuroscience research, you know that we can't multitask. Our brains can't do it. All we can do is single task. You might be good at bouncing back and forth a little bit faster than other people but you can't do multiple things well at once. It doesn't work that way.
The first part to being able to 10x your productivity and harness the power of a singular focus is to chunk or block your time. Think about how you can take your tasks and batch them. Do them all at once. For example, when you're answering email, you're not answering the phone, you're not answering text messages, you're not on the web. You're not doing anything else. You're answering email. That's what it means to batch your tasks and and focus your time.
Is it always like this 24/7? No. The same way that it won't be for you. As long as we're doing business with people, this is going to be an inexact science and it's never going to fit perfectly. If you’re in sales and your top customer calls, you can't say, "I'm going to ignore that. I'm going to work on these other tasks right now." But in the grand scheme of things that we need to get done throughout the course of the day, if everything is a priority, nothing is a priority.
If you’re not willing to take back some of your time, you’re not being maximally productive and efficient with your time. You just aren't. By chunking or blocking your time, you will never feel like you get more done faster, easier, with less stress.
The second part of harnessing a singular focus is to remove distractions. Distractions usually come in the form of notifications. Every few minutes, there’s a notification popping up on the screen saying you have a new email or meeting coming up, or your phone is beeping with a new text message.
All of life is based around narratives. We create a narrative in our own heads that we need to get back to someone urgently or something catastrophic will happen. Now, if it’s somebody you've been waiting for a call back for a long time, you take that call or you respond to that email. I get it. But for the most part, we create these narratives in our head where we need to be so hyper focused, attentive and responsive to everything going on around us and it ruins our ability to do things well and be maximally productive and focused with our time.
All I want you to take away from this video is those two very basic things: Condense and block things to be more productive with your time and also think about the notifications that are going off, through email, text, phone calls, calendar invites, reminders and everything else. Think about whether those are important in the grand scheme of things or whether you're just creating the narrative in your head and making them urgent.
I can promise you, if you level this up even a little bit, you have the potential to 10x your productivity and when you do that, you will never feel like you've gotten more done faster, easier, with less stress, than if you're able to harness that power of a singular focus. Have a great day.
