United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz | INTERVIEW after passenger dragged off flight

  • Oscar Munoz, the CEO of Untied Airlines, today said he felt "shame" when he saw the viral video of a bloodied passenger dragged from one of his airline's flights Sunday night.
"This will never happen again," Munoz told ABC News' "Good Morning America" in an exclusive interview.
The passenger, David Dao of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, a 69-year-old physician specializing in pulmonary disease, is at a Chicago hospital undergoing treatment for his injuries, according to lawyers for his family.
United Flight 3411, operated by Republic Airways, was set to depart Chicago's O'Hare International Airport at 5:40 p.m. local time Sunday, bound for Louisville International Airport, when the incident occurred.
United told ABC News that passengers were offered up to $800 to give up their seats for four crew members who needed to board.
When no one volunteered, the airline generated a list of four names to be removed from the flight and be re-accommodated, according to the airline's contract of carriage.
Of the four people, Dao was the only one who refused to comply, which triggered a call to airport police.
    Terms:
    United passenger forcibly removed
    United passenger removed

It is extremely hard to believe that such an old company like this doesn't have a mature policy when it comes to handling a case of overbooking and needing to displace a seated passenger. They only just figured out that the threshold for convincing a seated customer to deplane is much higher than one who hasn't boarded? Come on, who are you try to kid? I find that extremely hard to believe. From my own experience flying with United, the culture of the company is extremely arrogant and has a "us versus them" attitude with its customers. The front line staff are truly one of the most rude and obnoxious people in all service industries combined. It's truly appalling and surprising that this company is still alive after so many years of poor service.

Given the results brought on by deltas actions ,I bet the company is kicking itself in the head about being stingy and not offering the maximum amount of 1300 dollars. If they had I doubt any of this would have occurred , if they had though we would have never had this prime example of just how little delta cares for its customers.

The CEO has to resign. He completely screwed up his first two "apologies." Employee morale shouldn't come at the expense of customer rights. All officers involved should also be thrown in prison, and the idiotic staff that decided it was a good idea to get police officers or aviation officers involved should be fired, have pensions removed/cancelled, and also be liable for assault/battery. I'll never fly United again - ever.
The passenger had a concussion, broken nose, and lost two teeth. On top of that, the police department released a statement that said the "passenger fell and hit his head."
Finally - let's be honest about something - if this had happened to a black passenger, there would be protests and RIOTS all over the country.

Several years ago, I asked a United flight attendant to assist me to get my bag in the overhead bin because I was recovering from a back injury. She refused and told me that wasn't her job. She was so rude. Thankfully, a male passenger helped me, but I checked the flight attendant about her nasty behavior, telling her that I've never had problems before on American, Delta, or Southwest Airlines. The woman started power-tripping and threatened several times to kick me off the flight. All of this was public and upset me so much that I was crying. I spoke to the lead attendant once we landed and she apologized, but calls and emails to corporate were not returned. I vowed to NEVER fly United again. Seems that I was right to stay away.

@kimberlycoleman4630 No disrespect but YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN REMOVED from that flight.
Your back injury, unfortunate as it was is not the Flight Attendant’s problem and lifting your heavy bag (which likely was oversized to begin with per cabin baggage rules) is not part of her job during aircraft boarding. My sister has been a Flight Attendant for over 25 years having worked for multiple Airlines including United and with practically ALL Airlines, their policy is that IF the passenger cannot safely lift the bag into the overhead bin using their own (unassisted) power and strength, that bag is considered “cargo” and must be checked to its final destination, no exceptions.
Your objections to this policy are duely noted however your attitude toward that Flight Attendant, regardless of whether right or wrong should have gotten you removed from that flight. If in fact You subsequently boycotted United, they don’t care because there are many others including myself who still give them our business.

Three years ago, we sat inside a airplane in SF from 1 pm to 4 pm before they announced the flight got cancelled--there were two other UA flights cancelled as well. Hundreds of passengers lined up to get rebooked. UA only sent two workers to help, and one left after three hours. The remaining worker claimed that the passengers are "sharks" and she was this poor little fish. We stood in line from 4 pm to 10:30 pm. Never UA again.

so shameful so shameful. UA is going to pay a very very heavy price for this incidence. There is a very important lifetime lesson from this incidence to all the airlines carriers and it's employees.Just see what more will happen in another few days. It's history in the making. There is a permanent financial and character damage to United Airlines !!

Apologise to him? Your staff members dragged a man of his seat, dropped him on the ground and dragged him off the plane. The pressure you put on that man caused him to bleed from his mouth. He ran back to the plane clinging on and saying "kill me, just kill me I just need to get back home" he has 5 children who have children. Yes I know even if he didn't then it would still mean the same. All these videos describing how bad his past is.. Every single person in this comments and in this video have done things they wish they hadn't and this man tried to change his life around. This all happens because untied counted they're tickets wrong and moved an innocent passenger so that an employee can sit down. I am so disgusted that this is what our world has come to

The most insincere apology ever! He has to improve his crisis management ability and live interview skills first, before talking about improving UA!

The United pilots just came out with a response placing all of the blame on the Chicago police. How can they as they were accomplices, standing by to witness the violence enacted on their customer without so much as a word. Did you see any of the pilots, or, God forbid, the captain of the plane come out of the cockpit to tell the officers to peacefully handle the situation? No. Did you see any flight attendants jump in to stop them from dehumanizing the doctor by dragging him by his arms, unconscious as he was concussed? No. Did any of the United employees on the flight protest when his face was turned into a flotation device, breaking his nose, knocking his teeth out, and concussing him? No. Shame on you pilots association. Shame on you. Do you imagine the captain of a ship would allow such behavior? Not a chance. Grow up you psychopaths.

why did he pause when asked whether the passenger was at fault? Was he tempted to say YES??? What a genuine guy!

  • @sunnysmile7726
    @sunnysmile7726 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    1. Almost every airlines company oversells tickets. The point is the company should ask the passenger not to take this flight at the boarding gate before the passenger boards on the plane. Once the company allows the passenger to board and be already seated, the passenger has the right not to get off. This is UA's mistake FIRST - they should've prevented from this problem before boarding but they failed to do so. Then, you cannot say you have the right to drag any passenger out of the plane, especially in such a brutal way.
    2. No matter what the passenger's background is (color, age, profession, history....), that's nothing to do with and cannot change UA's mistake. Some people would put two different things to discuss. If a passenger is a saint, then he/she shouldn't be treated so. If the passenger has done something wrong before, he/she can be treated so??? This kind of logic is ridiculous.
No passenger should be treated in such a violent way and gets hurt no matter who he/she is.
    3. I used to take UA to the US. From now on, I will never take UA to any country; nor will my friends (I'm going to CA this summer; I changed not to take UA).
I'm not boycotting but TRULY SCARED by how UA brutally treats customers. I can't imagine what if I encounter such a thing someday because of their overbooking.

    • @wiljodangs2
      @wiljodangs2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

This scares me too... what if all airlines practice the same procedure in taking care of overbooking? I don't wanna give my seat up for another passenger just because they are higher priority than me, that would make me dispensable. Perhaps the solution should be no overbooking.

They think Asians are submissive and meek and purposely chose mostly Asian Americans to remove. If Mr. Dao was African American mainstream media and people would address the racism in this incident rather than ignoring it. Asian Americans are most often the victims of casual racism and oppression. Boycott United!

Bullshit. I've flown United a lot--this is EXACTLY who they are. I've avoided United at O'Hare since watching several years ago as a United Airlines gate agent deliberately sent a woman he didn't like to the wrong gate, ensuring she would miss her flight. I know this because he was laughing about it with the other gate agent afterward (I can move pretty fast, and let's just say that woman didn't actually miss her plane). Nice "joke". Now I guess we have to avoid United altogether. " Don't re-accommodate me, bro'."

Dear Mr. United Airline CEO , please understand that this case, the passengers were on boarded. the plane was NOT overbooked. This is totally the fault and stupidity of United airlines staffs, security police, and YOU were mishandled and dis-respect to all passengers. I used to fly United before.. but the check in gates staffs, counter staffs and planes staffs are generally NOT friendly and helpful at all.. Therefore, I will NOT fly UA again from my personal experience. It is a ridiculous services airline.

Stop lying United, if a flight is overbooked they would not give you a seat and let you board the flight and then remove you again. That is total BS, tell the truth. You fked up big time. Also why didn't you offer passengers some real compensation, e.g. $5k to take another flight? then you could have avoided all this bad publicity that will cost you millions.

Forget policies - do right to the passengers affected first, and don't hold back. Compensate everyone on board that flight, then go out of your way to make it right for David Dao. Finally, do it because it's the right thing to do; not because you're afraid to be sued.
Remember, you've already set yourself up if this ever goes to court:
Q: Do you think he (David Dao) is at fault in anyway?

If United "felt shame" over the incident, it would have "felt" it before this. What United "feels" is the huge hit to the stock price - that's why they "care"... now. Apparently, that's EXACTLY who your "family at United is" because they were even backed up as "following procedure". The skies might be friendly, but you have to avoid being BEATEN and DRAGGED out of the seat you paid for first.
