MANY people in the US respect the teachings of the Buddha even if we are not buddhists. Many of us respect the teachings and the concept of living in such a way to obtain enlightenment. As an example. Most people in the US are either Christian or atheist (among many other faiths) but both of those groups of people and those who adhere to other faiths all enjoy humor because there is a cultural understanding that it is not mean spirited. There is no intended malice. I think this is the best way to understand it. In the US, from a cultural perspective, we are joyful and seek out humor in everything and each other, and ourselves. There is a cultural expression of humility and humbleness in this. The point of jokes about ourselves or each other is to enhance and expand the joy in the world.
