I believe one of the reasons he chose to use just iron sights and not a scope was that the lens on a scope can reflect sunlight and give away his position. So it would seem like he was at a disadvantage when really his opponents, at least the other snipers he faced, were giving themselves away.
Also scopes were still in their infancy and not well sealed and cold conditions could cause them to fog internally and they limit the hours you can shoot because of light requirements. Many more reasons in the pre wwii days to mistrust optical technology.
Bicycle is cheap, quiet, needs no fuel or hay, faster than walking. WW2 era Finland had not plenty fuel production or lorries. A horse was number 1 transport.
The Fat Electrician is a wonderful storyteller, but there's one part of the narrative which is emphasized for dramatic effect IMO a bit carelessly. The "exploding bullet" has taken on its own life in the lore. In fact we have no evidence of the bullet containing explosive compounds or being pre-fragmented. The bullets from military rifles of that time were quite spicy, and even with Hague convention compliant full metal jacket, hitting bone is going to cause extra terrible injuries.
The Soviet army is marching through the Finnish swamps when they hear shouting from the other side of a nearby hill: "I bet one Finn can beat ten Soviets!" The Soviet officer laughs at this and sends ten of his best soldiers to deal with this guy. After a couple of minutes of shooting they hear the voice again: "I bet one Finn can beat a hundred Soviets!" The officer, now enraged, sends a hundred soldiers to silence this cocky Finn. A few minutes of shooting and screaming later, the voice shouts again: "I bet one Finn can beat a thousand Soviets!" The officer is now absolutely furious with this enemy, but knows that nobody could possibly beat 1000 soldiers alone, so he accepts the challenge once more and sends 1000 of his men. Nearly 15 minutes of shooting, screaming, and bright flashes later, a lone Soviet soldier comes crawling back over the hill with severe burns, covered in blood and half of his leg mangled. Panicked, he yells to his comrades: "Don't go up there! It's a trap! There are actually two of them!"
@@viking_nor watched it long time ago, got curious, did some digging, took me about 2 - 3 days, on and off, it was just propaganda with 0 proof, just words, the only truth about him was he survived the horrors fighting Russia from a very advantageous points, caused ridiculous amount of casualties, but lost the war non the less. His numbers are actually his platoon numbers with him and other 2 survivors from his platoon, both never said a word that Simo was a hero, a very excellent marksman but very resilient and very tough. Everything else are said by the Finland government, and to make it worse, he actually suffered heavy wounds and half of the war he was just recuperating in a hospital, and after recuperated, joined other regiments which again, not a word from them either.

That and i thinh the shooting distances arent in hundred meters if forest often.
He also had wider view of the area so he did not need to refocus scope after every shot. Just pick the next one on the row, line, whatever.

Actually the real number might have been as much as 800 kills. He took down with machine guns many too, sniped over 500.
