Why did it flop.... : ahem:
We never wanted a sequel. We never wanted a shoehorned in harley quinn. We didnt want a musical.
We want batman in our batman universe films, and not just blink and you miss it cameos.

"At the same time, they believe Phillips is a creative genius and worthy of gambling on."
You know what a creative genius doesn't do? He doesn't empower his lead actor to skip stunt rehearsals and to do whatever he wants during fight scenes and stunt-scenes in ways that endanger themself and the other actors/stuntpeople in the scene.
Honestly, once I read about Phoenix's antics on the first film, and the Phillips allowed it? I vowed to never give either man another dime by supporting anything they created again.
A genius understands how to make art in ways that respect the other people involved. Phillips is a hack.

Hollywood has successfully memory-holed the fact that the original Joker's success was a combination of the film being a comic film bait-and-switch and the mainstream media doing their PR work for them by running article after article saying "if you go to this film, a theater shoot might get you!" which made them want to find out what the deal was.

No, you have to consider two possibilities. Either, he got disconnected from the audience and didn't understand that the same narrative wouldn't work again due to us already having experienced the events of the first movie. Or, the more interesting possibility; he wanted to make you mad. Everyone who's seen the movie seem ti have fler exactly like the how the Joker movement felt throughout the movie. It's honestly quite impressive he manged to make us feel like them, just like when people wanted him to blast the host in the first movie. But why would anyone want to make a movie where you feel let down by watching it? I don't know, but anyone were to be part of something like that, it would definitely be Phoenix. He already trolled the world when he said he was going to quiet acting to pursue a career in rapping.

    • @comebackguy8892
      @comebackguy8892 4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

Then you know nothing. It was marketed as a musical, but it's really not. In a musical, people start to sing randomly like it's normal. Not in this movie. Here, Joker or Harley sing on a stage or as prisoners cheer this lunatic on or as he commits crimes. No one thinks it's normal. Important parts of the movie aren't sung either, only at times to add some "action" to an otherwise boring story and to show what is going through Arthur's mind. So really, this is just a continuation of Joker's dancing from the first movie.

    • @wreckitralph4714

@@wreckitralph4714 Well, not exactly you said it was a musical, I just wanted to point out that the direction wasn't the issue, just the marketing. There's only like 15 minutes of song in this movie. And sadly, those were the only interesting parts. It's technically just an epilogue, that LITERALLY let's down the audience. I don't want to spoil it, but the movie basically wanted you to feel let down. It's an insane decision that obviously no one likes.

I keep seeing all the comments saying "incel Joker", and I'm just like, yeah that's been the defining part of his relationship with Harly since she was first created for the 90s Batman animated series (yes, Harly Quinn was first made for the cartoon BEFORE she was later put into the comics, fun fact). The entire point of why Joker wants to keep Harly around is SPECIFICALLY to torment her mentality and physically. I think that it's more that the general audience is just now realizing this after her increase in popularity over the last 5 or so years. The comic/cartoon fans have always known this.

If I remember correctly, they normally say a film needs to double it's budget to break even. From what I understand, the theaters get half of that money and the studios get the other half. So, of the $121 million, the theaters would get $60.5 million and the studios would get $60.5 million. So they'd still have a way to go to break even, much less make a profit. That being said... I could be totally wrong on that. Just going off of what I've read in the past.

If you want to understand what made the second movie a financial flop and the first successful you need to understand what people loved about Joker (2019) in the first place. It had a good story, a fantastic main character performance and superb soundtrack, all helping deliver a painful social commentary coming coming from somewhere people never expected: a superhero movie. The main problem of Joker 2 wasn't the musical (ok, that also, but even if it weren't a musical it would have still flopped), but that it didn't have a story to tell. Joaquin Phoenix and the rest of the crew helped turn a good story into a great one. This time they didn't have a story.

the moment I heard it was a musical I lost interest in it. well the original is still a great film at least. and don't be too hard on Todd Phillips, sure he messed this up but that doesn't change the fact the first film was a big success, he didn't even really want to make a sequel but joker was such a big success they insisted on a sequel. give todd Phillips free reign with his next film and he'll probably make something good.

Just because the first movie made a lot of money doesn’t mean it is a good movie. I’m like Ewan and hated the first Joker movie. I can’t believe it actually made a “billion dollars”…..nothing about the first Joker got me excited. I never felt a connection with Fleck so that I was rooting for him to turn into the Joker and cause chaos. I hated that they changed his laugh from that of a madman into a some sort of uncontrollable mental condition. To each their own, but for me, Joker was the first movie in a long time that when it was over I felt robbed of both my time and money.

I watched it, and I liked the movie. Its not perfect, its not nearly as good as the first one, but its not terrible. People are expecting a repeat of the first, so they are going in with high expectations that won't be met. The ending is going to upset people, which is a valid criticism. Another valid criticism is how it does rehash too much of the movie to apparently pad out the time along with the musical numbers. What some people don't understand about the movie is it seems to be a flip of the standard Joker/Harley relationship. First off, a lot of people don't recognize that Joker/Harley have a toxic relationship that is not health. Usually its played off as Joker being the more manipulative one in the relationship, and this movie has it where Harley is the more manipulative one. I think a lot of people don't see or understand that aspect of the movie.

I am 100% sure that Todd Philips wanted this to happen, he sabotaged this movie to make a statement about unnecessary sequels, and to expose studio stupidity, by getting them to approve increasingly outlandish ideas and see how long it would take for somebody to stop it.
