I have a 2015 VRS estate in red with the black pack and 19-inch wheels. It came fully loaded from the dealer, as they bought it to be a demonstrator so it has a panoramic roof, keyless entry, self-parking, active cruise control, reversing camera, uprated stereo, etc, etc. It’s the petrol DSG model and around town averages 35mpg. On a run if I keep below 85mph I average 42mpg. Keep to 65 mph and its high 40’s. In 8 years the only thing that has been replace is the washer pump. The most practical all-round car I have ever owned, fast enough to get into trouble with the plod, it will cruise happily at 130 mph on the Autobahn, what more could anyone want!
I think a lot of American drivers would LOVE the škoda Brand…realizing they fit between VW and Audi…they perform beautifully and are styled like cut-crystal..!
Skoda is a brilliant car manufacturer, very underrated in my opinion, I think there is still a reputation which lingers from the Skoda of yesteryears. As a brand, I don’t think that there is a better car for the price, the interior space is enormous & the reliability is brilliant.
I saw it outside the dealership and the sun was on it and it caught my eye. I stopped to look at it, arranged a test drive, and went back 2 days later to buy it. Never regretted it for one minute and would only change it for another one so why bother? @@PetrolPed
Having watched the videos on both the Octavia VRS and the Superb we went to test drive them both yesterday. They were both very impressive cars. We decided on the Octavia and got a great deal on an immaculate 200ps Diesel from Skoda with 22% off the list for a car with just 3,000 miles on the clock. We are big Audi fans but, having test driven the A4 Avant as well, there was no sense that we were downgrading at all. A big thank you for the excellent video and review, we are pleased to be new Octavia VRS owners.
As pretty much everyone else in the comments has said, I can't think why I would ever need more car than an Octavia vRS. Brilliant for transporting bicycles too.
A simple remap will take it to 320bhp and if you get the limiter taken off at the same time a possible 170mph top speed. one word of caution the manual gearbox versions clutch may not like this but the DSG is absolutely fine and so much fun
I have had my 2019 245 DSG Estate for nearly 12 months and absolutely love it. It's quick enough. Reasonably economical and swallows up all the kids and the dog plus all their stuff. It's a great car.
Still driving my mark 2 vrs.Manual,diesel,remap,B16 suspension upgrade, 55mpg all day.Goes like a stabbed rat to quote Mr May.Most fun ive had in a car.cost me 5000 quid.Done 50k not missed a beat.160k on the clock. They built better than other vag products.
After several Ford models (3 Mondeo's & 4 Fiestas Inc their ST3) I'd become bored with their range and disillusioned by their ecoboom problems. I read many positive reviews of the Octavia and dipped my toe in the water with a 1.5 TSi and have had a very pleasant surprise with how quiet, comfortable & economical the model is. Now I'm reading great reviews such as yours about the VRS and am thinking it's time for an upgrade. Many thanks for your enthusiastic recommendations for the car which are very much supported by the comments from other owners as seen below.
The Octavia VRS has always been a good looking (and good performing car) and, as you say, at that price it’s worth every penny. Compared with the EV Astra you drove at well over £40k it’s a no brainer. A higher segment car which has more space and performance for a lot less money ….. maybe other manufacturers should take note! 🤔
On my third vRS estate (current is previous design from new, first petrol one, with DCC and digital dash). Recognise what makes it cheaper and none of it comes close to being an irritant or makes it feel wanting, 245bhp more than enough. Love it every time I use it. Of note I use an Individual drive mode that is Sport without the silly , pointless electronic growling noise that vibrates the vent slats. I have also had connectivitiy issues with Android Auto on quite a few VAG cars in recent times, found that unplugging then leaving it a few minutes, trying again, a few times, eventually it works and my latest Google phone working better than previous phones for now. Praying Skoda don't muck it up too much going forward - looking at this model - electronic handbrake, those calipers, the infotainment system, plus the hint that automatic only, the push for electric/hybrid - all worrying for the future, am keeping mine for at least 2-3 years more.
The Octavia has always been a great seller for Skoda and they really are good cars. It’s Skodas choice of infotainment system that I hate and reason I’d not buy any Skoda. Another great balance review Ped keep up the great work
I have a 72 plate Vrs estate, in black. New Jan 2023, now 45k on it. 55-60mpg (Diesel), torque when you and it eats motorway miles but plenty of smiles on the mountain roads. Great company car!
The perfect all rounder! I have a 2019 VRS saloon in silver. Incredibly practical for the family and incredibly fun when its just me behind the wheel 😁
I had one on hire a couple of months ago, although it wasn't a VRS but a 1.5 petrol. I found it amazing. And from Northumberland down to Devon it was a dream. Half a tank for 450 miles cant be bad. My only gripe was my left leg was banged up against the transmission tunnel, an after 7 hours of driving it became quite sore. Id get something soft put around there if it were mine. Apart from that amazing.
That must be the most glowing review on any car you've tested. I have got a 245 previous model top spec with a vaq differential, it makes a big improvement in how it handles and puts our power down. I've driven and owned many different cars but my 245 has to be the best overall package ,its nor 100% in any category but its 90% all.i know you keep mentioning its only got 245 but, but it has 280lb/ft from 1500rpm right up to 5,500rpm . Which is very good , but my skoda only weighs 1450kg so its power to weight is better than more powerful rivals. But its crowm jewel is its balance ,and torque what makes it faster than 245 suggests . They hold their value really well too.
As a mk3 owner (albeit running 300+ bhp and with DSG) I wholeheartedly endorse the VRS, its impressed me hugely, I liken them to SAAB, the article TG did about SAAB when they said they had a specific type of owner was bang on, I feel Skoda are going the same way, the new Superb is awesome, I'd buy it over any other German brand, it just makes so much sense. A thing to note if you are choosing VRS is that if you want to drive quickly I'd recommend good tyres, sounds like common sense but you simply can't get the power down with ditch finders fitted
I'm on my 2nd VRS estate. Both have been in black with the Black pack, 1st was a 66 plate and the current is 18 plate. Still makes me smile when i see it. I love the green of this VRS.
@@IBOO57 you are correct the Octavia is better on a B road not by much probably down to the difference in weight.. I got the Superb as I preferred the looks over the Octavia at that time. On the Motorway the Superb is simply Superb (sorry).
It’s nice to see that there are cars that give you a sensation of speed and fun at normal highway speeds. I’ve always maintained that if everyday cars were designed in a way that gives you the sensation of speed rather than actual speed then perhaps there would be less need for speed traps and less speed related accidents.
I remember picking up an L&K spec model as a hire car up in Shetland way back in 2004, was very impressed by it and still rank it as one of the best cars I have driven. Just makes me wonder how good the latest model is given the advancement in technology over the last couple of decades.
Currently got a Mk3 vRS 245 estate. We absolutely love it. As my son says - and he drives it most at the moment - it has and does absolutely everything you need and very little that you don’t. Oh, and we have the 6 speed manual, not the DSG. Having driven both, get the manual if you’re wondering.
7 speed DSG is pretty sweet. Also if you are thinking of tuning then the DSG handles more torque as well. And the speed of those shifts is pretty mad. Manual would be sweet though.....
Finally Peter you find out about the Skoda VRS..I enjoy mine. I enjoy mine so much that I accept the oil use problem that mine developed and had the engine rebuilt rather than buy a new one. OK there was the problem of a 6 moth wait, so engine out at 102,000 kilometres, ( yes kilometres not miles) new pistons, rings, bearings, water pump and belt and one week later back to driving one of the better cars I have owned for driving. Mine has the DSG box (3rd rebuild) and when it works it works very well. I really would like a DSG box in my hillclimb car.
Love the Octavia VRs. I had a 2014 Octavia VRs estate in Race Blue and absolutely loved it. Fun, fastish and practical. A looker as well! Dealer service was excellent. Had it for 3 years and did 45k miles and never missed a beat! Traded it in for Golf R Estate mk7.5! Both part of the VAG group and two of the very best cars I’ve owned!
Fantastic car. I've got a 2020 VRS Challenge edition. It's perfect for every situation. My car is 300bhp from a £250 stage 1 ECU tune. It shocks a lot of people on the road, normal Audi's and Bmws lol
@@neelsn007it went up by £50 yearly. Honestly nothing crazy. I have a clean license, never had a crash and drive for work aswell so guess it depends on the individual
@@loftus5073its been perfect. No issues. Had it serviced recently and then did a big drive from London to St Ives in Cornwall. Absolutely no issues. I don't drive it like ive stolen it tho. I use the power when its needed but just because ive got it if you know what i mean lol
Had my 245 vRS DSG for 7 weeks now. Came from a 2019 Golf R estate which I loved had a lot of second thoughts about getting rid of. I wanted to stay in the VAG group and wanted something that still had a bit of performance (obviously it isn't as quick as the R.) The Mk8 R was quite honestly out of my price range and even if I had been, I'm not that fussed on the design and after experiencing the Golf infotainment system in my partner's car, would have been put off getting one. I can honestly say I'm not regretting it. The car and it's features as standard are everything the Golf should have been. Options such as the electronic boot, ambient lighting etc. Not forgetting the simple Skoda touches (umbrella in door, ice scraper in fuel flap.) The car has a good amount of space,.more so than the Golf but not so much that I feel like I'm driving anything bigger. There is plenty of performance and the car looks great. Had numerous comments about it. So far I have minimal complaints, door handles are cheap, scratch plastic and the stock sound system could be better but as a fast(ish) family estate loaded with kit at a good price , it's pretty much impossible to beat. I had mine at 1yr old with the winter pack added, it came in at under 40k new which is a consideration for the higher tax band. There are some comments about the infotainment system, so far, so good . I find there to be a good balance between physical buttons and on screen and in my opinion, it's easier to use than my partners golf. The voice command function works well. The Skoda App works well and is generally fairly priced for what I want. If you are in any doubt about getting this car, don't be, you will struggle to be disappointed
I had 3 versions of Skoda Octavia Combi RS and I just bought another one - this is a hybrid version. Best car all around for me with 3 children. Practical for the week driving and fun on weekends when i want some fun. 245 BHP of fun and practicality ;-)
In 2009 bought a Mk 2 2007 Race Blue Metallic petrol Octavia VRS from a dealer in Cambridge. Absolutely loved it. Was unlucky as after a couple of years rust spots appeared on sills. Unusual & should not be happening on a car of that age. Corrected under warranty. Paint was a bit soft too as just before I sold it the front wings were chipped with tiny pin marks. Also didn't like short runs as sludge on oil filler cap but only in cold weather. Otherwise great car. Massive boot. Fast (197 bhp) Golf GTI engine. When I changed car for amazing sounding 6 cylinder BMW 130i I noticed BMW's lack of low down torque after Octavia. No turbo on BMW ! Still miss Octavia as I do my white Golf R I had after BMW. Love current car though... 2020 Silver 4 door Mercedes AMG C43
I have a 2010 mk 2 estate that i bought for £1500, it needed the dual mass flywheel replaced as it was rattling about and while i was at it the clutch and slave cylinder. One of the previous owners had it remapped, and it's now a brilliant car to drive, goes like a scolded cat and difficult to fault for less than 3k in total.
I had a 67 petrol vRS estate which is rated as one of the best cars I’ve owned. One thing of note is that the alloys stuck out quite a bit which meant endless curbing (my bad parking), so make sure you spec a decent tyre that offers a bit of overhang from the alloy. Moved to a 310 Cupra Formentor and have constant infotainment issues - it’s a VAG thing 😅
I've loved the Octavia vRS since the first generation. I'm aiming to own one at some point, new or used. This is basically everyday automotive perfection.
I have a 2014 diesel as my daily driver. Had it for 3 years. It's such a great allround car. I'd like a bit more power like you say but realistically on normal roads it has enough. I get 52mpg as well. I'll probably keep it another year then replace it for another one.
I ordered a well specced VRS estate with dsg in 2015 , my second Octavia VRS back then it cost me £27k now one with not as many goodies is £38k and we are expected to think that’s normal and acceptable. They are great cars and agree one of the best all rounders there is
Had a 2016 VRS 230 limited edition from new. It cost me 26k! LSD, leather, heated seats, nav, it was on point. Sold it 2 years later @ 16500 for a G31 530d. Don’t regret it but what a tonne of car for the money
We have a previous generation VRS 245 DSG estate, it’s without a doubt one of the best all round cars on the road. It does everything well, you can move a mountain in the boot, cruise for 5 hours and get out feeling refreshed, throw it round the country lanes. Amazingly we average low 40 mpg and on a run even pushing it from time to time we’ve managed 50 mpg! It’s 7 speed DSG not manual and it’s a great gear box. I couldn’t think of anything else I’d replace it with for a daily so it all driver 👍
I did recommend that you try one of these in the comments of your Kodiaq video, so I was well pleased to see this. I’m on my second VRS estate which is a 2019 245 TFSI with the DCC and manual box that I bought new. As you say, it’s brilliant, does everything you need and is a blast on a B road. I’d always had Golf GTIs before and needed more room….the VRS was the obvious answer. I’ll be having another after this one.
I bought one two months ago and have to agree with most points in this review. Top end the petrol has the legs on its diesel sibling however it comes at a cost (mpg!). The top end fizz on the petrol version though is epic, open it up and it will keep pulling and pulling. Only thing I would say is the build quality is a bit iffy in some places...Great family car though, currently filled with half a tree to take to the tip 😂
Love this review ped. I got a dsg petrol version late 2023. I would add to your review that when using Android Auto I've had zero issues with the infotainment. No issues with driving position but I'm a very average 5ft 10. I am going to remap mine soon, which will take the power to around 350bhp. The chassis can manage this power, plus these come with a limited slip differential as standard. Would have been good if you'd mentioned that. The brakes are also pretty good, they're the same as the golf R uses. I agree a 4 pot caliper would look great, but these feel better than my last f56 mini JCW, which had the brembo's.
@@Cous1nJack Keeping those drains clear is a must. They are designed to be a controlled leak, but is has to drain quickly otherwise issues. There is a tool you can buy to clear them. Do not use compressed air as you can blow the drain tube off the barb fitting and then you are looking at a decent job to re-fit.
We had two of the previous Gen Octavia VRs estates, TDI though 56.8+mpg! They were my (& my wife's) favourite cars of all those We have been fortunate to own! We then switched to a Superb for space (3 growing kids & also a superb car), but then moved to a Ford SMax because it's a great family car..........it's still our current car, it pales in significance in all aspects! I am a huge fan of Skoda's, great cars and great value! PS: ref the brake calipers, on the previous model, it came standard with the VW GTi performance brake calipers and huge discs. It might be an option, performance pack or something!
I think a viable alternative is a used VW Golf estate 7.5. I have had 4 Skodas all manual Diesels but went for a Golf R estate and really like it. Gentle right foot on a motorway ( so many have speed cameras now) I can get 40MPG. 30 urban but in town it’s hopeless, can watch the fuel gauge drop as you look at it. Boot is 610 L but there is a raised boot floor that be can be removed to give more space and there is still space for a space saver tyre(keep the raised floor and a full sized tyre can be stored) As much as i like manual I appreciate the ease of use of DSG for most situations. I personally like the black roof lining and I don’t have good experiences with sunroofs, I would never have one again.
I glad that you have driven this car at long last. I am disappointed that you did not drive mine when we first met in 2017. I do not own it now unfortunately
I’m of an age when Škoda was seen as a joke (you can guess roughly how old from that) , but I really like the brand now , not the pseudo 4x4’s but proper shaped cars like this and this looks great. I wouldn’t call this a bargain but I get what you mean when comparing to the more expensive alternatives. I don’t think my budget will stretch to one of these but the previous generation is still good and offers just as good value only used. I’m glad some manufacturers are still producing estates and I cannot understand why the granddaddy of all estates , Volvo , are stopping making them.
Great review as always! I’ve always like the VRS especially the estate version. If I could name a better or maybe just on par with the Skoda, I would say the Cupra estate! 👍🏼
I've got a semi automatic in race blue which I love, first car I'll probably keep at the end of the PCP given it's a great all rounder and excellent family car.
I have had 2 VRS's and now on my second Octavia Scout which I absolutely love. Prior to those cars I had a run of BMW 3 or 5 series estates. Through my work I have to go "off road" a bit - farms/construction sites - and it is an ideal car for me. Does 50mpg on long runs. Such a shame that Skoda stopped selling the Scout, I would have another one.
I was just about to order a Scout when they did that. Very annoying. They tried to tell me I wanted some crossover thing instead. Sat in it, tried to find something to like about it. Just wasn't for me.
Still love the vRS. A great combination of comfort, practicality, speed and good looks. There's nothing else in the market like it. My MK1 didn't have the coal mine dismally dark interior with now obligatory black or anthracite headlining that manufactures force us to have on anything remotely sporting.
Yes i have a mk 2 with the earlier trimmed seats with green and red vrs logo, they lift the cabin a bit more rather than the black option you get in later models. 👍
It's a great looking car and classy in that colour, in my opinion. I can see the appeal, particularly one that's two or three years old and depreciated a little. For VW Group not to have sorted their software out after all this time is disgraceful though and makes you wonder what else it won't be able to fix if there's a problem. Great review Ped 👍
I bought a 2012/13 RS tdi 170 hp in 2023, and saved big ( paid 3000 pounds) I am very happy with it. I waited until a well maintained one popped up, It had 350,000km (freeway mileage) but I dont care. Its a Skoda and its a diesel, manual, and a bargain for the kicks I get from driving it. I'm still ahead even with less bells and whistles than the 2024 model. "Reverse snobbery" lol. My Dad used to say "you lose thousands as soon as you drive out of the showroom". I think your idea is best, but I purchased within my means.
The engine is the same power unit bhp as the one the Golf GTI performance has. Skoda were asked if they would install the 272 bhp unit from the Arteon, Superb etc but the VW group head honchos said no because they didnt want sales taken from Vw cars. Skoda are great cars, good dealers. Its the badge snobs that are the problem
Cracking review just sold my gti edition 45 too many worries in the future of how the Mark 8 will behave with its various issues. Looking at getting a VRS 245 estate as more of a fun practical car and you’ve won me over. I’ve got a Skoda scout and that has been fab for the past 5 years and this car will be the perfect combination for a dual replacement.
Hello Peter…this is all the car we ever need…like good work trousers…it does everything in a practical way. It may not have the badge or image many want but Skoda is a very old manufacturer with an illustrious past that few recall…long before the 1000MB and Estelle!! It always seemed more attractive than the VW Golf Rstate which has often been the most dull car you could ever buy…this new Octavia deserve all the success it should get! 🙂🙂🙂😊
I have a 69 plate vrs, same engine as this car with 40,000 miles. Really good on mpg and decent performance. At the time, just before covid, I paid £21,000 new. How things have changed in 4 years.
I’ve had an RS wagon for just over two years and love it! I think it has a bit less front end grip than a Golf GTI but still a lot of fun to drive. You’re absolutely right about the infotainment - it’s the worst bit of the car. Do you get reverse cameras on Octavia’s in the UK? They’re standard here in Australia but the car tested didn’t seem to have one by the tailgate button…..
That is a lot of car for the price. There is a guy in our village with a blue one that looks smart but has a Akrapovich exhaust on it and it sounds brilliant when at full power. One of our neighbours had a Fabia in that colour and it does look good but not for me. I am glad you have figured out the correct way to load your bike, backwards. I think my Honda is off to pasture new to be replaced with a Qashqai with a tow bar for my cycle carrier so I can load my eMTB so I can start exploring now that I have built up a few muscles.
cracking review, and that green colour is very cool. shame they only offer AWD/4X with the diesel model, as i considered this an upgrade potential from my petrol Outback, but by the time you add some extras, its over £40k, and while the tax limit was set some time ago, seems the gov don't care that new car costs have jumped £10k+ since it was introduced. I'd grab these cars while we can, until we get forced into £50k+ EV's that we can't charge outside of large cities, if at all 😁
The Octavia is good value for money in todays market. Ive just taken delivery of a PHEV estate in petrol blue and so far it's been a very competent car which is incredibly easy to drive. The infotainment system is slow to load though and is infuriating at times. My iV model doesn’t have much less power at 204bhp and with a chunk of that coming from its electric motor it does move when you put your foot down. Its not perfect but I think it'll be very good to live with. And if you could still order one it was only £34k which is great value for a PHEV.
As I already stated on Instagram Pete, couldn’t agree more. It is unbeatable value. Would definitely like to get my hands on one of these, even with a DSG to be honest. Brilliant! Enjoy NYC where they do not get these! 😉🤗 Cheers, Tom
I had the original MK1 vRS in 2002. That car was a bargain, £15,200 on the road, 180 bhp and £400 spent at Jabba Sport took this to 240 bhp, in that time this was quite a powerful car and would worry Boxsters amongst other (considered) lesser cars. Had it 3 years and covered just over 100,000 miles. The only issue was a coli pack that let go. The true story here is just how much other VAG group cars are ripping buyers off given the huge amount of parts sharing.
i had mk1 done by jabba sport and wow it was a quick car a gave a bmw m3 a good run for its money , i traded it at a jaguar main agent and they called me the next day after they got it and could not believe how quick it was .... also had the mk2 vrs done by jabba sport . and also mk3 which was a diesel .... ended up with superb 272 sportline plus and that feels as quick as a tuned vrs and you can get the power down from the lights in the wet as 4wd , the mk1 jaba would spin in 3rd gear .......... thats only problem with vrs its a longish car and when at the light the front come up and you get the horrid knocking noise from the traction control , if only the vrs was 4wd with the 300 bhp engine i would buy in a heart beat ..........
I just bought pre-registered 200bhp diesel hatchback at a very good saving on the list price. As far as I can tell no more diesels are being produced, and the announced 265bhp petrol version also does not seem to be available either. I hope Skoda have not discontinued the Octavia. So far the car is brilliant and I am running it in carefully. The only thing that concerns me for the future is the wheels, firstly because the roads are so badly potholed for low profile tyres, and secondly because the polished parts of the wheels will be difficult to repair if kerbed.
Fantastic review, completely agree witht the driving position, even for a shorty like me 😂. It was great to see you and the car at podium a couple of weeks ago. I am 2500 miles in now and still loving the manual!
Quite like these and eyeing one up for when I have to change my car next year. Going from high spec V60 D4 auto, lovely car but reaching the age limit that my company imposes. Want to save money and get good value but still have something relatively cool, good looking and exciting and this just about ticks those boxes!
Got a similar car as the one you reviewed, except mine has every option except for 360 camera and Canton (chip shortage) in black and 6spd manual. Massaging power memory seats, Pano roof plus many other things... I have owned it for 2+ years now and the infotainment has gotten much better thanks to constant OTA updates. I get about 6.5L/100km driving it at 130-140 here in Germany... Haven't yet found the speed limiter at 268 indicated..or 261 GPS. Gearing in the Octavia is longer than the MK8 GTi actually so the car actually is more economical and does a better 100-200 as well.
I think my 67 VRS is peak family car for me. Fast enough, Big enough, fun enough, manual and all the silly aids are off when you start it. Think we’ll be keeping it as long as possible.
If 245 is enough, order a 2024 facelift vRS estate and get 261bhp. The petrol vRS has nothing more or less than the Golf GTi engine, and despite my GTi being TCR, I still enjoy driving the vRS more. I think I've got a long wait for the facelift car to be delivered, but it'll be worth the wait.
I just got a 3 month rental for business miles , yet opted for the vs tdi , what an engine, sure it’s not petrol refined but as a mile muncher I’m getting 55mpg motorway speeds , and the torque, it’s already been a month and I have 4000 on the clock going between work venues doing 6 days shifts , the iq lights fitted to my car we a god send saving me from. Suicidal deer it may only be 190 hp but the torque makes up for it ,
Another great video, as you say matrix headlights are magic at night (I have them in my car). I’ve not driven a manual in a few years but that looks like a great fun car.
Just brought one of the last of the Mark 4s, i understand there is a slight uplift with design little tweaks here and there, and now been told, they, Skoda are not fitting sunroofs? And as you said only autos now, Would be good to have a rear view camera i have sorted that out, no problem., The front lights have been upgraded on the new design but hay ho that's how it goes , I would imagine a lot more money as well, also on a sad note, Skoda are finishing with the Octavia 2024 so wait until the end for upgrade or just buy news out there now at the lower price, great car for the money and mainly built by VW spec. Have fun and enjoy.
Hey Ped! I'm so glad you did a review of this car. I currently own a 2013 version and it's just the best! (I actually prefer my shape) but it's just a Swiss army knife 🗡️ of a car. Awesome 👍
These should be able to do considerably more than 40 on a run. I managed close to 50 on longer trips with my MK3 petrol VRS with the 220ps variant. Great car - those seats are naff though and very cheap feeling. The optional microsuede ones are excellent and should be what they fitted standard, but very pricey.
What more can be said that hasn’t already, the Octavia is a truly competent car, with the added sporty fun in the VRS. An Audi mechanic from a local dealership said to me (and no doubt to others to) that if you wanted a reliable (time proven) car, don’t buy an Audi - get the Skoda equivalent. Spoke volumes to me!
I bought a 70 plate first edition 1.5 tsi 3 years ago brand new(pre registered) for £17895.00 now that’s half the price!! I do agree with your comments on the infotainment system mine was awful and I had never ending problems with it. That reason alone would prevent me buying another one.
Thanks for a really interesting review. I love the quality and value of Skodas. Me and the wife have had four between us. I bought a petrol manual VRS a couple of years ago and it’s been fantastic all rounder. I got one of the last mk3 versions (69 reg) due to the really dodgy reputation the most recent version has for infotainment. I’m not ever selling this. Easy 45mpg on a run and 245bhp. Yes please.
Welll Skoda’s are amazing performance reliability, practical and value for money, i bought my first 2003 and still have my 2005 vrs hatch back, been off the road for a few years now as i now run a 340i tourer which i also love, but i would definitely consider getting a new vrs well done mate how was the big apple 👍
Great cars. Had a Scout TSi as a workhorse for a few years. It was flawless. I would definitely go for a manual VRS over an heavy, expensive EV any day
I have a 2015 VRS estate in red with the black pack and 19-inch wheels.
Sounds perfect 👌
Skoda is a brilliant car manufacturer, very underrated in my opinion, I think there is still a reputation which lingers from the Skoda of yesteryears. As a brand, I don’t think that there is a better car for the price, the interior space is enormous & the reliability is brilliant.
It is!@@PetrolPed
Thanks for this. Great to hear 👍
As pretty much everyone else in the comments has said, I can't think why I would ever need more car than an Octavia vRS. Brilliant for transporting bicycles too.
Glad you're discovering how good Skoda are I'm on my third had A VRS 4x4. Loved it
Glad you like them!
100% best all rounder at such an affordable price!! So underrated
Yep 👍
A simple remap will take it to 320bhp and if you get the limiter taken off at the same time a possible 170mph top speed. one word of caution the manual gearbox versions clutch may not like this but the DSG is absolutely fine and so much fun
I have had my 2019 245 DSG Estate for nearly 12 months and absolutely love it. It's quick enough. Reasonably economical and swallows up all the kids and the dog plus all their stuff. It's a great car.
Just brought a 2019 1.5 DSG, i need an automatic, absolutely love it, it's my first Skoda won't be my last.
Nice 👌
Still driving my mark 2 vrs.Manual,diesel,remap,B16 suspension upgrade, 55mpg all day.Goes like a stabbed rat to quote Mr May.Most fun ive had in a car.cost me 5000 quid.Done 50k not missed a beat.160k on the clock. They built better than other vag products.
I worked for a Skoda Dealership in sales for 11 years just after 5 years at BMW.. Save your money fuck your ego they are astonishing value !
They sure are 👍
After several Ford models (3 Mondeo's & 4 Fiestas Inc their ST3) I'd become bored with their range and disillusioned by their ecoboom problems.
I agree 👍
Another great balance review Ped keep up the great work
Apple Car Play sorts that out…when it works 😜😂
I have a 72 plate Vrs estate, in black. New Jan 2023, now 45k on it. 55-60mpg (Diesel), torque when you and it eats motorway miles but plenty of smiles on the mountain roads. Great company car!
👍
Estates are very cool, in fact ice cold, excellent detailed review Pete and from a value point of view this car is a no brainier.
I agree 👍
Hi - just ordered a new VRS this afternoon… cracking all round car, great value and felt even better about it after watching this review
Enjoy it 👍
The perfect all rounder! I have a 2019 VRS saloon in silver. Incredibly practical for the family and incredibly fun when its just me behind the wheel 😁
Right on!
I loved it 👍
Love your enthusiasm for this car
I always love a quick estate over a saloon everytime
Me too mate. I wish they offered that colour in Oz.
Pete they truly are fabulous cars I’ve had a mk1 2 mk2’s and a mk3. Currently in a Superb Sportline plus 272hp 4 wheel drive it’s a keeper.
Nice 👌
How do you feel the Superb Compares for enjoyment on a B road? I like the Superb but am worried it will sacrifice some if the Octavia vRS Playfulness?
@@IBOO57 you are correct the Octavia is better on a B road not by much probably down to the difference in weight.. I got the Superb as I preferred the looks over the Octavia at that time. On the Motorway the Superb is simply Superb (sorry).
It’s nice to see that there are cars that give you a sensation of speed and fun at normal highway speeds. I’ve always maintained that if everyday cars were designed in a way that gives you the sensation of speed rather than actual speed then perhaps there would be less need for speed traps and less speed related accidents.
Love my 2022 VRS with DCC and Canton in grey. Agree with the review and also still get comments from people who like it.
Manual better on fuel but DSG I reckon is better for 90% of driving day 2 day
7 speed DSG is pretty sweet.
👍
Just ordered 4x4 TDI RS, the last window before facelift model with almost full equipment, cant wait for it.
Totally agree, it’s the best car on the road 😉 love my diesel 2022 one, another beauty is you rarely see the same car as yourself on roads!
Couldn't agree more!
Nice 👌
What one do you prefer ? I have a mk2 vrs and want to tune it up but no point putting money into a 2011 car, may aswell save up and buy a newer one
Fantastic car. I've got a 2020 VRS Challenge edition. It's perfect for every situation. My car is 300bhp from a £250 stage 1 ECU tune. It shocks a lot of people on the road, normal Audi's and Bmws lol
Ooo…sounds good 👌
did your insurance go up by much after the remap?
@@neelsn007it went up by £50 yearly. Honestly nothing crazy. I have a clean license, never had a crash and drive for work aswell so guess it depends on the individual
Is the clutch standard and if so how's it been?
Not forgetting the simple Skoda touches (umbrella in door, ice scraper in fuel flap.)
The car has a good amount of space,.more so than the Golf but not so much that I feel like I'm driving anything bigger.
Nice 👌
"Threw its toys right out the pram." I like that colloquialism.
PP with the Pump logo and the Red and Blue representing Positive and Negative.
Yep 👍
I have a 2014 diesel as my daily driver. Had it for 3 years. It's such a great allround car. I'd like a bit more power like you say but realistically on normal roads it has enough. I get 52mpg as well. I'll probably keep it another year then replace it for another one.
I bought a 23 plate octavia vrs and love it. Head up display is awesome. Ulez made me upgrade from a 2004 fabia vrs from new 👍🏼
Very nice!
I ordered a well specced VRS estate with dsg in 2015 , my second Octavia VRS back then it cost me £27k now one with not as many goodies is £38k and we are expected to think that’s normal and acceptable. They are great cars and agree one of the best all rounders there is
Yep. A problem with all manufacturers 😢
Had a 2016 VRS 230 limited edition from new. It cost me 26k!
LSD, leather, heated seats, nav, it was on point. Sold it 2 years later @ 16500 for a G31 530d. Don’t regret it but what a tonne of car for the money
Nice 👌
👍
if can fit a Bianchi, is the right car to buy 🤭 thank you for the video! 🙏🏼
Absolutely!
I'm sold Pete, looks fab, drives well lots of room and compared to MG performance variants superbly priced!!
Fantastic car, Pete. Absolutely love it! (Pan roof is a £1590 option! You know it makes sense!).
Ooo 🤔👌
Skoda pan roof 💧 💧 💧
Boot is 610 L but there is a raised boot floor that be can be removed to give more space and there is still space for a space saver tyre(keep the raised floor and a full sized tyre can be stored)
As much as i like manual I appreciate the ease of use of DSG for most situations. I personally like the black roof lining and I don’t have good experiences with sunroofs, I would never have one again.
I glad that you have driven this car at long last. I am disappointed that you did not drive mine when we first met in 2017. I do not own it now unfortunately
Great motor 👍
Nice review for a great car at this value. I tottaly agree, this car make you smile a lot.
I do that everytime a drive my O4 vRS
Thanks for sharing!
You should learn something, people: it's RS, not VRS. Octavia VRS doesn't exist, and never has.
@@AndrzejPuch how’s longs a piece of string because I’m pleased for you.

Black headlining and heated seats are a must on my list. The windscreen is the light bit.
Horay Pete back to more affordable cars
Had the vrs mk3 loved it
It's a great looking car and classy in that colour, in my opinion. I can see the appeal, particularly one that's two or three years old and depreciated a little. For VW Group not to have sorted their software out after all this time is disgraceful though and makes you wonder what else it won't be able to fix if there's a problem.
Great review Ped 👍
Yeah it’s not good 👎
I bought a 2012/13 RS tdi 170 hp in 2023, and saved big ( paid 3000 pounds) I am very happy with it.
Great car we have the hatchback version at work and I love driving and they do stick to the road very well.
I would have one for my own car
Cracking review just sold my gti edition 45 too many worries in the future of how the Mark 8 will behave with its various issues. Looking at getting a VRS 245 estate as more of a fun practical car and you’ve won me over. I’ve got a Skoda scout and that has been fab for the past 5 years and this car will be the perfect combination for a dual replacement.
How did you go? Happy with the purchase?
Again! I have a, bla bla..
NOBODY CARES!
So what sort of mpg do you get?
@dazayit On a good run, 40+ mpg, round town about 25-30mpg.
@@coltgti ooof, diesel it is then. Recent daughter, looking for bigger than my corolla an keep looking a vrs or an a4 sline.
Nice, concise video, what made me chuckle, is that we can see you wanting to “ Paddle shift” then realizing, and grabbing the gear lever 😂.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I saw a Superb in a car park a few years back. I was taken aback by the quality of it. I’m about to order a Skoda Enyaq. Great car.
Good choice!
@@PetrolPed You should test the new 85 Edition or the 85 sportine.
Sounds like a plan 👍
cracking review, and that green colour is very cool. shame they only offer AWD/4X with the diesel model, as i considered this an upgrade potential from my petrol Outback, but by the time you add some extras, its over £40k, and while the tax limit was set some time ago, seems the gov don't care that new car costs have jumped £10k+ since it was introduced.
Cheers, Tom
👍
I had the original MK1 vRS in 2002. That car was a bargain, £15,200 on the road, 180 bhp and £400 spent at Jabba Sport took this to 240 bhp, in that time this was quite a powerful car and would worry Boxsters amongst other (considered) lesser cars. Had it 3 years and covered just over 100,000 miles. The only issue was a coli pack that let go. The true story here is just how much other VAG group cars are ripping buyers off given the huge amount of parts sharing.
Nice 👌
i had mk1 done by jabba sport and wow it was a quick car a gave a bmw m3 a good run for its money ,
i traded it at a jaguar main agent and they called me the next day after they got it and could not believe
how quick it was .... also had the mk2 vrs done by jabba sport . and also mk3 which was a diesel ....
ended up with superb 272 sportline plus and that feels as quick as a tuned vrs and you can get the
power down from the lights in the wet as 4wd , the mk1 jaba would spin in 3rd gear ..........
thats only problem with vrs its a longish car and when at the light the front come up and you get the
horrid knocking noise from the traction control , if only the vrs was 4wd with the 300 bhp engine
i would buy in a heart beat ..........
See, at that price, it's a bargain. But at 40k, is it really?
I just bought pre-registered 200bhp diesel hatchback at a very good saving on the list price. As far as I can tell no more diesels are being produced, and the announced 265bhp petrol version also does not seem to be available either. I hope Skoda have not discontinued the Octavia. So far the car is brilliant and I am running it in carefully. The only thing that concerns me for the future is the wheels, firstly because the roads are so badly potholed for low profile tyres, and secondly because the polished parts of the wheels will be difficult to repair if kerbed.
Had the 2008 model for 10+ yrs and miss it so much
Fantastic review, completely agree witht the driving position, even for a shorty like me 😂. It was great to see you and the car at podium a couple of weeks ago. I am 2500 miles in now and still loving the manual!
It was you I was talking about in the video 👍
@@PetrolPed really appreciated that, I watched it last last night and I was so chuffed with the mention that I woke my other half up to show her 😂
Quite like these and eyeing one up for when I have to change my car next year. Going from high spec V60 D4 auto, lovely car but reaching the age limit that my company imposes. Want to save money and get good value but still have something relatively cool, good looking and exciting and this just about ticks those boxes!
Yes, yes it is. And I’m not biased at all becauseI own a 2020 RS245.
👍
Thanks for this 👌👍
I think my 67 VRS is peak family car for me. Fast enough, Big enough, fun enough, manual and all the silly aids are off when you start it. Think we’ll be keeping it as long as possible.
👍
Suicidal deer it may only be 190 hp but the torque makes up for it ,
Yep 👍
Another great video, as you say matrix headlights are magic at night (I have them in my car). I’ve not driven a manual in a few years but that looks like a great fun car.
Totally agree!
My mate is a road Policing officer, he says its a genuine 170mph car in saloon version. Possibly his favourite car of the fleet.
Nice 👌
Great video, I’ve been thinking of buying one for a while now. 👍
Hey Ped! I'm so glad you did a review of this car. I currently own a 2013 version and it's just the best! (I actually prefer my shape) but it's just a Swiss army knife 🗡️ of a car. Awesome 👍
👍
These should be able to do considerably more than 40 on a run. I managed close to 50 on longer trips with my MK3 petrol VRS with the 220ps variant.
Great car - those seats are naff though and very cheap feeling. The optional microsuede ones are excellent and should be what they fitted standard, but very pricey.
Had one since March Silver with DSG I love it
Nice 👌
What more can be said that hasn’t already, the Octavia is a truly competent car, with the added sporty fun in the VRS.
An Audi mechanic from a local dealership said to me (and no doubt to others to) that if you wanted a reliable (time proven) car, don’t buy an Audi - get the Skoda equivalent. Spoke volumes to me!
Interesting 🧐
I bought a 70 plate first edition 1.5 tsi 3 years ago brand new(pre registered) for £17895.00 now that’s half the price!! I do agree with your comments on the infotainment system mine was awful and I had never ending problems with it. That reason alone would prevent me buying another one.
The 2022 models had a high power processor chip and the 1896 software update which seems to have cured most of the issues.
Still love my 2011 vRS estate with 160k on clock - owned from new and just keeps going!
Nice 👌
Thanks for a really interesting review. I love the quality and value of Skodas. Me and the wife have had four between us. I bought a petrol manual VRS a couple of years ago and it’s been fantastic all rounder. I got one of the last mk3 versions (69 reg) due to the really dodgy reputation the most recent version has for infotainment. I’m not ever selling this. Easy 45mpg on a run and 245bhp. Yes please.
Right on!
Totally agree alloys stunning , be a very good comparison against a focus st estate with proper exhausts 🤔🤭
Great cars. Had a Scout TSi as a workhorse for a few years. It was flawless. I would definitely go for a manual VRS over an heavy, expensive EV any day
Echo that. We've had a Scout for years now - effortless, fast enough, big luggage capacity and bomb proof reliability thus far.
