I tried to reply to your comment but TH-cam censored it. My response was entirely factual and complimentary toward Chinese people in Britain but TH-cam loves censorship and hates the truth. I will try to rephrase my comment in a way that will enable it to get past the algorithms. Chinese people in Britain have done really well economically, educationally and socially, just the same as they have in the USA and pretty much everywhere else they have moved to. A similar case can be made for Indian emigres. Because they, as a minority group and often one that arrived in their new homes with very little, have succeeded where others have failed, they debunk the narrative that these countries are institutionally racist and unwelcoming. This is an uncomfortable truth for those who wish to push the currently popular but completely false narrative.
The world does not revolve around the disembarking of some Jamaicans from a ship called the Windrush. It's hot air being offered constantly as a pivotal event.
I will paraphrase WEB Dubois: "Your country? How came it yours? Before the Windrush landed, they were there." Sorry dude, but it looks like the actual story here is 1) The British Empire becomes the biggest trader of blacks from West Africa by the end of the 18th century 2) The whole affair is a sordid one, involving a lot of violence, a lot of greed, and riches through ill gotten gains whose legacy is alive and well, like an unacknowledged illegitimate son 3) America is often the punching bag for slavery in the UK, but the funny thing is nobody ever teaches the kids the truth that Uncle Sam learned at his mama's knee, up to and including using beatings, floggings, rape, and mutilation for punishment -in fact, every slave code that affected the Caribbean also affected the 13. The 13 had royal governors, just like Jamaica and St. Kitts did. They answered directly to the king. 4) No reparations have ever been paid to the heirs of these slaves nor when the more curious ones find out the truth are they taken seriously. 5) For centuries as a nation the people on the island have been encouraged to think British Culture=white culture, and the policy of a White England, a White Scotland, and a White Wales has been de facto in place for a long time, enforced by the Atlantic Ocean. Windrush would not be a controversy without it. It would have no significance either. 6) Great Britain does eventually give up slavery, so credit where credit is due. That does not mean it stops supporting it, if indirectly. The biggest buyer of Southern cotton in 1861 is....Old Blighty. On top of that, the Empire starts to lose interest in its North American holdings in the 1830s, and starts to concentrate more on India. That is a history in and of itself, but the point is that with the Caribbean, the Empire cuts and runs. It even has the gall to force reparations on blacks to be paid to THE OVERLORDS who enslaved them, which shall not be paid off in full until the year 2015. On top of all THIS, it was not until massive slave revolts and the outright revolution in Haiti does the idea of emancipation catch fire. NONE of this is discussed in any A-level or GCSE class. And now, the government that once encouraged blacks to come help and save the mother country has an attitude of wham bam thank you ma'am. Decades after the fact. When London is long since rebuilt. Nice, really, of Boris to be so considerate /s. Nice, really, when for so long GB has acted nothing like a good mother at all.
@@marykatherinegoode2773, incorrect, the largest trader of blacks from West Africa was Portugal. Of course, the far bigger trade was from East Africa to the Arabian peninsula. Why should reparations be sought from those who never enslaved anyone by those who were never enslaved? You know where the word ‘slave’ comes from, don’t you? It comes from ‘slav’, from the Slavic people who were enslaved for hundreds of years by the Ottomans and Berbers. Everyone with any real knowledge of this subject is absolutely sick of the nonsense that people with an overblown sense of victimhood and entitlement keep spouting. There are plenty of countries run by black people, they have great climates and abundant natural resources. I was very excited and exclaimed 'ooh look mom, a black man'! Her embarrassment only increased as I pointed out 'another one' then 'another one' until I finally declared "I'm going to count them"! As an adult I can understand her embarrassment but my view was through the innocence of a child's eye. There was no malice in my mind. The modern concept of race only became into fruition in the 17th and 18th century in the colonies in America and Caribbean because the ruling elite were realising that black and white slaves and indenture servants were joining forces together. @romi mok read up a bit. The Chinese were enslaved by the Japanese. The Indians and Eskimos are still struggling for survival as races and were never as numerous as black Africans. Strange that Olusoga makes no mention that the first people to enslave Africans were other Africans. Or that African slavers were raiding the coastal villages of Britain and Ireland centuries before any white man stepped on African soil. Do you think African slaves were dehumanised more, or were more harshly treated, than British peasants and serfs of centuries past? Britain outlawed the slave trade early in the 19th century, but no such relief was afforded to our own ancestors who had to feed themselves and their families. Landowners in Britain didn't bestow the luxury of free food on their workers. Read a bit about British social structures and conditions then tell me how the blacks were singled out for special treatment.
His first sentence contains an error when he calls the ship the "Windrush". It's name was actually the "Empire Windrush". The next error that I noticed was where he contradicted himself by saying at 0:20 that the story of black people in Britain goes all the way *back to* Roman times and then saying at 1:35 that there have always been black British people (which would imply that the story of black people in Britain goes all the way back to *before* Roman times). Extraordinary claims should be backed with extraordinary evidence, and if he is claiming that history is being taught wrongly in British schools, lying by omission in effect, he should show a lot more attention to detail, surely? I mean, to shorten "Empire Windrush" to "Windrush" is to omit part of the story, the exact same thing he is accusing the British education system of doing. So, at this point, having watched just a minute and a half of the video, I am feeling far more skeptical of this British university professor than I was at the beginning of the video.
As an African American, I find this very interesting. But I'm curious, how can Black British people call this history "their past" when they do not descend from the black slaves that the man in the video is referring to? If I am not mistaken, most Black Brits willing moved to the UK from Africa and the Caribbean. Whereas in the US we literately built our country and we actually descend from slaves here. So for us, learning where we come from is vital. But why would an African immigrant living in the UK need to know about British slavery? If you want to know who you are, just ask your African grandparents. You have the luxury of doing that--unlike my people.
The Cass: A good number of black Brits are descended from slaves who were brought to British colonies like the Carribean. Read up some more on black British history to find that out. Just because England didn't have slavery literally in its backyard, dosen't mean things were any better for them than it was for us. Just because black British folks don't have the exact same history as us black Americans concerning slavery, that dosen't make their history with it any less legit, and it's ridiculous to say that it isn't. Obviously you didn't watch this video, which tells about the history of slavery in Britain.
The Cass Your comment implies that you do not fully understand the Slave Trade and our shared history - Afro-American , Afro -Caribbean, Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Columbian etc. I wish I knew who my Great, Great grandparents were and from where they originated, but the Sugar, Cotton and Cocoa Plantation records only classify them by shipment and description (male, female, child, approx age) rarely by origin. Most of the records are in the British Archives or in the private collections of the Slave owners decendants. We share a common ancestry. Research some more or try to watch the full 4 series by Dr. David Olugosa - it's a good start!
Also, of equal importance, is the history of Haiti and the slave revolution organised with military precision against all odds! Napoleon was savage and brutal and Haiti paid a hefty price for its liberation from French slavery.
@@martinacrafton1252 I completely understand the shared history that we have. But the difference is, my DIRECT ancestors fought and died in every American war, including the civil war. Juneteenth is a part of African American history that resonates with us in a way that you could never understand, no matter how many books you read or episodes of Roots you watch on TV. We've had black neighborhoods burned to the ground and we've been terrorized by hate groups like the KKK on camera. So let's be clear, sharing some ancestry from the same continent (that is very vague, by the way) is not the same thing as being a direct descendent of a slave who actually built a country like America or Haiti. That's all I am saying. The fact of the matter is, most Black Brits are immigrants who willingly moved to England from Africa. Nobody made you move there. So why complain about the unfairness of your environment? You are fully aware of your history as most of you still have your African names. And you can also go back to Africa to see your family members whenever you want a real history lesson. Those of you who come from the Caribbean come from countries that are predominately black like Jamaica. Those countries have black faces on their money. You have an indenity that my people here have never had. So I respectfully disagree with your stance. And I think if you're going to compare a Afro-Columbian to a Creole person, perhaps you should do a little more research of your own. They're culture and DNA is quite different. The Creole people in America are very proud of their French heritage. And Afro-Latinos are mixed with Spanish DNA.
@Bob African Americans define the black experience. We built America, we fought and died in every American war and like it or not...we are the most influential black community that has ever existed. To say that there is no such thing as an African American, is like saying there's no such thing as a Filipino, Dominican, Brazilian or a Mexican. Colonization created new ethnic groups and we are one of them.
Think the guy (& BBC) needs to make a clear distinction between North Africans & those south of the Sahara when making these assertions. (Think I”m right in saying the so-called ‘Afro Romans’ were North only.)
I agree, certain things should be taught at school, and aren't. Along of course with how ordinary white peasants were treated. Being virtually paid as slaves, hung for stealing food, children forced to work, no political power or right to speak out.......Not much is taught about that either! But it's history......when my home city of Bristol is told to say sorry for it's history, 'who' do they really mean exactly? The streets, walls, pathways? Or is it really aimed at the white British population? If so, let us hear those calls in plain language for what they are, or keep your peace........
Abolsute rubbish. My kids have been taught the history of this country and the blot that was slavery. Its pure misinformation to deny education ignores our history.
What makes you think the white people at that time were English? Millions fled towards Britain and changed their names, time after time they come to a stop on the ancesters sites. That really old granddad who was Russian and came here for some reason, they, can't find his father. His memory is forgotten and today they think their family has always lived in England. Research Russia Poland in the 1700-1900's mass emigration. We now even have a German royal family whose great +++ father is Muhammad and Vlad the impailor.
The best he can do is quote a couple of doubtful examples ( he presumably thinks that my Chinese phone, if found on my corpse, will indicate my ancestry!) which prove nothing except people from odd places were sometimes brought here for various purposes. Without having any demonstrable impact on our civilisation. A little bit sad Dave. Do hope your Nigerian cousins are including plenty of white history in their education systems.
Why does David Olusoga describe himself as 'black' when his mother was white? Surely, he is biracial. He would possibly reply -because he was treated as a 'black' in our society. Recently a teacher, Miss Codrington-Rogers stated that Black History should be taught. She claimed, 'We built the pyramids, developed modern numbers, built universities.' 'Our ancestors were philosophers, scientists, military strategists, authors, writers, activists and so much more.' When the aforementioned lady refers to 'black', is she not conflating 'black' with 'African'? Arabs do not describe themselves as black so her 'black' history is in danger of appropriating the accomplishments of others. David Olusoga is a very knowledgeable historian but when he talks about 'blacks' in the Roman Empire is he referring to the Africans of the North African Mediterranean area?. I know this article is about 'Black History' but I do wish ALL British people could be taught to pronounce the letter 't'. It drives me mad when I hear the term 'Bri'ish etc. I noticed some of the pupils' (I hate/loathe/abhor the term 'kids') pronunciation was lacking in 't's. Teach them how to speak! English is a beautiful language gradually being eroded by 'diversi'y' and woolly liberal teachers.
considering there were european people in north africa and the middle east duing the roman empire, it makes sense that there would be black/dark skin people serving/living in parts of europe at that same time. is the number large enough to get us to believe History is much more different than what we've been taught? i don't think so.
In 1950 it was estimated the population of Britain was around 50 million and the population of non-white people was around 20 thousand. You whittle that down into percentages and BAME people would have made 0.0004%. So, a minuscule fraction of one percent. On the slave trade what he forgets to mention, the African Moorish kingdoms going back to the 8th century regularly sailed north to Europe and the coasts of Britain and captured over a million people into slavery over a period of 800 years at least. So that was black people capturing white people into slavery hundreds of years before the British Empire existed. That’s what’s not being told the history books at British schools. Do not listen to this white hating race baiter.
Ayuba Suleiman Diallo is interesting too. Henrietta Lack had cancer cells that were used for research, she gets a statue and is described as mother of modern medicine? It's getting a bit insulting to Pocs that these liberals tell lies like this.
Her name, you twit, was Henrietta Lacks. The cancer cells were taken without her permission and they lead her to believe she was getting cured. She DIED. Her story is seen as a great miscarriage of justice and her whole story has long come to light. Where are the stories of blacks within UK society? Why must British history only ever equal WHITE history? Surely at least one did well, but strangely, being treated like a guest in the only home you've ever known seems a lot more customary. Funny that.
@@marykatherinegoode2773 The trouble with your approach Mary is that if you big-up inconsequential people (and I would include myself and probably you under that label) then it only serves to make their inconsequentiality obvious and demeaning. Token 'great people'. Like the 'special' people in schools who must be given golden stars so they don't feel bad or lose confidence - but then everyone knows that the ratings are rigged. I want to help the special people but I can't overlook why I think of them as 'special'. Black people are better than this and they do not deserve to be treated as such. Lacks has been given a 'golden star' and the rigging is obvious - she (the person) was and is inconsequential, only her genes were of significance and she personally did nothing to further the cause of cancer research herself. I wish to beg forgiveness if this offends anyone, I have no idea if Henrietta Lacks was a good kind wonderful woman or not, I hope she was; but that is not the point of this statement.
People should look up HistoryDebunked were it shows dishonesty and misinformations coming from Olusoga. This Afro Romans were mostly North Africans and looks similar to Algerians and Tunisians and this applied also to Ivory Bangle lady who might have been North African. She probarly look more like actress Sofia Boutella. So what her bracelet was made of African or rather North African ivory as there were North African elephants still around before they died out during late Roman times.
Roman Solders in Britain we’re NOT black subSaharan Africans , There were Berbers- Arabs. Olusoga interchanges Africans and Blacks to suit his narrative… Sameful!
As a mixed person I wish people would focus less on race and who created and did what in the past and more on the future and what we can do to prevent the horrible things of the past from ever occurring again. We have to focus on coming together to build a better safer world for the next generation. All these things serve to do is create more tension. Now even in the comments section we have whites saying blacks are taking over and blacks saying the same things. Everyone’s fighting for what? Recognition? Why can’t we just recognize everyone equally as a whole and focus on the positives? Every race contributed something to this world to make life the way it is now. I don’t understand why that can’t just be enough.
Exactly, all we should look for is the role of the individual in a modern society, socially responsible, socially accountable, nothing to do with 500 year old notions of race
Let's not lose sight of why people are responding in an overwhelmingly negative way. Olusoga is a disgrace to the academic profession he claims to belong to. He tells lies to further his distorted views on the history of race relations in Britain.
So many haters. The reason the BBC can broadcast this information is because it is true😂. Get over it people. There is more to know and learn. What are you haters afraid of?
I love how the BBC are promoting this idiocy as if it's pivotal history that is being censored or carefully left out of academia. Schools don't teach 99.9% of all history, it generally highlights the most important issues in late modern history. This is so trivial, how could you think this should be prioritised?
The Roman empire was clearly multi-cultural - although the vast majority of Roman "Citizens" were of Italian origin, but it is simply untrue that a Black Sailor was lynched in 1919. Charles Wooten was part of a gang that got into a fight with Swedish Sailors over cigarettes, they puled out knives and Razors and then cut the throat of a police officer that tried to break the fight up. The gang then fled to their boarding house and when the police arrived in force to arrest them Wooten shot 3 policemen before fleeing. He was chased by a mob enraged at the shooting of the officers and then was either pushed into the docks or jumped in to try and evade the mob. Sadly he died. This information is easy to find in newspaper records and it is difficult to understand how a well known historian could make such a blunder and claim that he was lynched?
Garbled nonsense. You are confusing two separate incidents. On different days. AB Wotten was not involved in either incident. The Bermudian sailor was chased and stoned. Take the time and effort to check his autopsy report - quite a lot of trauma there, not consistent with jumping into the water.
Any census before 1948 will contradict what Olusoga Is saying. At the end of the day. I can’t blame him if you’re gonna tell a lie Tell a big one head’s off to David Olusoga I guess.
if kids are learning about British history in school, they should be learning about important parts the history of Britain that has shaped the country. There are different levels that pupils learn history, for example GCSE or A level. It is not possible at any level to have time to teach about every different era, or subject in history. Obviously only certain time periods, subjects can be taught. For example the 1st World War and it causes, the Reform Laws in 19th century Britain, ( including the extension of the voting franchise, and abolition of slavery). These are important parts the history of Britain, that have greatly influence the country today. Its is important for people living in the country to know these things. I was at school a long time ago, but one of the subjects we studied in history was the triangular trade across the Atlantic between which included the trading in black slaves from Africa and Europe and America. There are lots of other subjects in British history that could be mentioned, but at the end of the day the syllabus should really be about the subjects that have the greatest influence, in a historical context on Britain. There is not enough time in any history syllabus to go into details of individual lives whether they be black or any other ethnicity. Unless they had a major influence on British history. I dont know how schools are expected to fit everything in , including sections on black history. There is only so much British history they can fit in to the curriculum, so inevitably some aspects will be left out.
Olusoga has been shown to be wrong on so many of his productions that he cannot be relied upon for non-biased output. I would describe him as a producer of fake news and the BBC should beware of its own reputation in fronting this man.
I was hoping to hear some black british history, not whining, very disappointing. Surely it is of great credit that the govt. responsible for abolition was prepared to pay such a vast sum to make it happen?

Of course as the BBC"s slave guy he has a cushy job for life just so long as his stuff ticks the right boxes.
@Star of Europa The slave owners and their offspring have received £17,000,000,000. You, your Mum and Dad, your Uncle and Aunty, your Grandparents, Great Grandparents, your friends, your work colleagues, through our taxes have been paying the slave owners and their families for 'their loss'. We only finished paying them in 2015! So for 25 years of my working life I have been giving money to slave owners. Imagine if your family were enslaved would you want money to go to the person who enslaved them or would you want it to go to your family? How would this affect future generations?
@A Real Londoner I agree with you but this is a programme on British Black History. They should have a programme on all slavery. In all slave trades though, if you were a slave you were most likely better off if you were white. Do you have any good places to look up the Arab slavery? I'd recommend 13th Amendment on Netflix for modern day USA slavery.

What about native black British who were here before white invasion
@@Dhuxul9before they evolved into people with light skin?
The world does not revolve around the disembarking of some Jamaicans from a ship called the Windrush. It's hot air being offered constantly as a pivotal event.
I will paraphrase WEB Dubois:
"Your country? How came it yours? Before the Windrush landed, they were there." Sorry dude, but it looks like the actual story here is
1) The British Empire becomes the biggest trader of blacks from West Africa by the end of the 18th century
2) The whole affair is a sordid one, involving a lot of violence, a lot of greed, and riches through ill gotten gains whose legacy is alive and well, like an unacknowledged illegitimate son
3) America is often the punching bag for slavery in the UK, but the funny thing is nobody ever teaches the kids the truth that Uncle Sam learned at his mama's knee, up to and including using beatings, floggings, rape, and mutilation for punishment -in fact, every slave code that affected the Caribbean also affected the 13.

The West Indies were British. As were the people who lived there. There was no "draft" - conscription - in the West Indies. All who served were volunteers. And which regiment are you talking about? The problem is you see race through a modern lens. Back in Roman times they didn’t have a concept of race. They just spoke in terms of nationhood and ethnicity. A black and white person could be the same ethnicity like a Jewish person can be any race.
The modern concept of race only became into fruition in the 17th and 18th century in the colonies in America and Caribbean because the ruling elite were realising that black and white slaves and indenture servants were joining forces together. They needed to divide and conquer.

It just annoys me when people make comments on subjects they don’t have a clue on.
Why does "Black History Month" focus solely on black people in "white" cultures? Why does Black History Month not focus on true "black" heroes like Shaka Zulu, who took a small African tribe and turned it into a conquering military force to rival any European empire? The Zulus rampaged through a large part of southern Africa, destroying everything in their path, anihilating rival tribes.
The Zulus were quite an amazing force in that period, why is this not being celebrated?

well Britain's always had a few swarthy races throughout history . why obsess about black folk , why not chinese , indians or eskimos !

The Cass:
A good number of black Brits are descended from slaves who were brought to British colonies like the Carribean. Read up some more on black British history to find that out. Just because England didn't have slavery literally in its backyard, dosen't mean things were any better for them
than it was for us. Just because black British folks don't have the exact same history as us black Americans concerning slavery, that dosen't make their history with it any less legit, and it's ridiculous to say that it isn't. Obviously you didn't watch this video, which tells about the history of slavery in Britain.
The Cass
Your comment implies that you do not fully understand the Slave Trade and our shared history - Afro-American , Afro -Caribbean, Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Columbian etc.

Do you think he believes yourself I’d love to know
I love how the BBC are promoting this idiocy as if it's pivotal history that is being censored or carefully left out of academia. Schools don't teach 99.9% of all history, it generally highlights the most important issues in late modern history. This is so trivial, how could you think this should be prioritised?
It seems like the moral authoritarian woke left have gained control of the establishment
Why don't schools teach the truth about the history of slavery and how the British fought to end it.
Not taught in schools......maybe because it is FAKE🤣.
The whole organisation needs disbanding.
Hahaha the truth hurts😂😂😂 yes we were in the Uk since Romans time
BBC skating on thin ice nowadays. Nearly all credibility has gone!
I was hoping to hear some black british history, not whining, very disappointing. Surely it is of great credit that the govt. responsible for abolition was prepared to pay such a vast sum to make it happen?
Why is black history whining?? It’s what happened and is being told!
@@1971Blubear : But this isn’t ‘ what happened ‘ This is just a distortion of the real facts and history, Olusoga is pushing his own warped narrative
@George Leech black history goes back further then any history because black people are the first people aborigines.. they have and will be everywhere
And I wasn’t taught any German, Japanese or Eskimo history at school,I wonder why?
Are you in Germany or Japan? I wonder why. Also the word "Eskimo" is considered a derogatory term by some. It looks like you were not taught that either. I wonder why.

@Aaa Bbb "recent discoveries"? 😏 Ok. Do you care to share which ones? Your ears are only open to what you want to hear.
Damn, remember the fascinating story of that one black brit who worked in a tapestry?
Absolutely incredible, truly hidden history.

A hugely disproportionate amount of Geordies have been in the armed forces, some say due to deprivation from social engineering but this is not taught in history...now this bloke is a Geordie from central Newcastle but this fact doesn't interest him. Of course as the BBC"s slave guy he has a cushy job for life just so long as his stuff ticks the right boxes.
Agreed. And excluded underclasses in London and SE.
The eternal victim eh?
Rwanda shows exactly what black history is all about it is just one example of the many tribal genocides that have gone on for millenniums.
You are talking rubbish, its the same racist divisive bollocks this guy espouses.
France and Britain shows exactly what yt history is Slaughter, enslavement, stealing of Africa and Asia.
@@Africasoil, wait, what? You mean that there was no slavery or slaughter in Africa before Europeans arrived?
Oh hang on, that’s BS.
They were compensated for the loss of human property and we can't get a reparation?
@A Real Londoner If all your arguments are based entirely on the phrase "But what about?". You need to start questioning your reason for arguing in the first place.
@@theotherwise3102 I don't speak emoji but, thanks?
Where abouts in Britain were slaves sold? Because as far as history is concerned, we as Briton never had slaves, infact if a slave set foot on British soil, they would be free.
As for reparations, I think you can have yours, when the Africans pay us Europeans reparation for the whites they captured from ships and coastal raids (the Barbary Pirates). They forget to teach that one dont they.
Why are kids not taught about the otterman empire who savaged Europe ?
Ah. Yes. Those rampaging Otters. That "Ring of Bright Water"? Pure revisionism.
I am beginning to learn so much from Professor Olusoga thousands of miles away from Britain. Thank you for helping uncover the truth of the disguised unknown history unavailable in the many published books and manuscripts issued for so many years. Keep up the great work!
Yet another "expert" who has never and will never be permitted to debate the merits of his "expertise" or the supposed facts he spouts.
The arrival of the Empire windrush was the beginning of so much pain and decline socially and morally for our nation a fall from an ethno state to a multicultural waking nightmare Enoch Powell the unsung prophet said it most profoundly when he said “we must be made literally mad “hopefully with the rise of populism the damage can still be undone 🤔

What does not get taught in schools is British history.
We need to learn about Madam Efunroye Tinubu, there is a statue of her in Lagos.
Big slaver wasn't she? Don't think her statue will be pulled down any time soon.
@@johnmarsh2078 You will also find a slave museum on the coast of Nigeria, there is a well there that the slaves drank from to make them forget, the water was tainted by a plant. In the museum they talk about Africans selling Africans.
@@beehinde In Britain it is taught that only the bad white-man caught or owned slaves. In fact white Britons were enslaved by the Barbary Pirates and sold in Africa long before black slaves were taken to the West Indies and America. There will be no British museums featuring the sufferings of these people. All slavery is obscene.

The people on the Windrush were British. They had British passports. They were coming to what they had been taught was the motherland.
The comment section in this is honestly disgusting. Every time our black history is just taught as its been hidden and not taught in schools, someone has to find defense to it?...
