Because there are no missing millions of votes. People expected to show up for Harris simply did not. According to Sky, more people voted in 2020 than 2024. That's where the votes are. I'm no expert, but I am inclined to agree that the polls shot Harris in the foot. Polls that showed Harris leading made some Dems relax and think they got this. Reps on the other hand, likely felt the need to come out and bridge the gap. Of course, a whole range of dynamics played out.

He's half right. Trump actually had two million less votes than he did in 2020. The bigger problem is that Kamala had 12 million less votes than Biden in 2020. Had she had the same amount of votes as Biden, she would've won in a big way. Kamala had everything running against her like Biden's current unpopularity, amnesia over Trump's first term, Trump never being called out for being a grotesquely wretched liar and criminal, etc. Plus, Americans are too comfortable, we haven't seen true chaos and uncertainty where the country can possible morph into a dictatorship. It's very likely to occur if we're complacent and let Trump be Trump.
I agree. I know many are reviewing the lack of votes - 2016,2020 were categorically MASSIVE turnouts that I think folks assumed would be the norm. People went back to not voting, and Harris lost in-roads in key strongholds for democrats. The democrats will have to confront how they’ve disconnected with their base. My main concern is that folks have rightly called Trump an authoritarian. Democratically elected. What actions from a Trump admin will be enough to spear a response, and would there be a duty to respond? I think we may sleep walk ourselves into surreal acts
Trump has media platforms which completely overwhelm the mainstream networks at this point. 70 million views of Rogan interviews with Trump/Vance/Musk just on TH-cam happened within the last week of the election - I am pretty certain they swayed the results across the nation, because their reach would have been about twice that number, or more with other streaming and right wing amplification. Democrats have nothing even vaguely equivalent. It is not really a fair election when propaganda completely overpowers the truth; and there is palpable fear. The next election will be much more difficult. We need to prepare to uphold the Constitution and the provisions and rights it stands for. Freedom of the press; and fairness in our justice system will be crucial, along with many other concerns.
In my world, she, much of the media, MANY MANY left wing pundits, etc. called Trump out a LOT for being a liar, a criminal, a racist, and on and on. Certainly many regular folks commenting on videos, etc. did. So when you claim he wasn't called out, are the lights on upstairs?
That was caused by the MSM media and the Democrats. Once you start to catastrophize everything, without it all coming true, it becomes ineffective. People start not taking it seriously and tune it out like a mom who nags her kids until they no longer pay attention. That's part of what happened. People care about what affects them directly. The elites talking down to them and telling them everything is great is not an effective way to build coalitions.

I remember listening to the Run Up many times, while I was walking or while I was in bed. And I recall Astead pushing Democratic guests on Biden's age and mental faculties. And this was before the whole debate debacle. He saw a problem from miles away, and he was right to be skeptical of these guests. Biden staying could've led to a Reagan-style win, so while Kamala still lost, she blunted the worst of it.
I agree that this newly emerging "right wing podcast bro" media ecosphere that is cropping up on TH-cam and other places (especially as it relates to young men) is critical to understand.
Great discussion, but if you were trying to reassure us, I think that last exchange scared me a lot. It's not that I don't know what to expect from Trump, it's that I hadn't considered tha congress is now recast in Trump's image. Uh oh....
There is something that he said that did not connect for me, if higher turnout favoured Trump then why was there less voters in 2024 than in 2020? It would be interesting to discover how many people on both sides switched their vote from four years ago and also the breakdown of the people who voted four years ago but decided to sit this one out and their reasoning.
Kamala had high energy huge multiple rallies all over the country ! The positive energy was AMAZING. It contrasted with a much less successful and dwindling number of trump followers. Dt was in serious cognitive decline as it got closer to the finish line. Also, I listened to all the longterm Republicans who supported Harris. All the well known Republicans who spoke out about leaving magaland and going to the Blue side for our country.
Pennsylvania is a midwestern state? Trump only got 20% of the vote in Philadelphia. Sounds low, but it was historically high, which meant Harris couldn't make up for losses in rural PA. And it included 24% of black men. In Pittsburgh voter turnout was low. Another problem. In the Philly suburbs, about a week before the election, a friend noticed a lot of Trump signs, something he hadn't seen in 2020. He voted for Harris early, but said he thought Trump would win. Anecdotal, sure, but local knowledge matters. Better than most pollsters. That said, overall the NYT did a good job at the technical level in reporting the results. Better than their actual reporting and post-mortem analysis. Finally Trump reminded me of JFK. Trump's speech on election night was certainly rambling. He spent a lot of time talking about Musk's rocket landing. I'm thinking, why? I hadn't seen it. A Harris voter friend, said he had, that it was amazing, and that Musk was a genius. Given widespread institutional failure, it reminded me of the space program I watched as a kid and JFK. A kind of seat of the pants optimism. We have deep problems. To get out of them, to rebuild the industrial base, train or retrain workers, it's gonna take people who can actually do something. Not political apparatchiks. That was the importance of Musk and the Silicon Valley bros. I like the Taylor Swift music I've heard, but convincing a lot of teenage girls you're special, building a brand, isn't remotely similar to actually doing something.
shouldn't have kept saying Biden was sharp as a tack or that the economy is "doing well" when most of us are struggling to afford basics every paycheck... I mean seriously? it's amazing how ridiculous they are. I hope they are ashamed.
I don’t like trump But at least he will shut the border down ! I feel the migrants just want a better life but we just can’t have them unvaccinated and living in tents , and clean up these ghettos with these overgrown empty lots and abandoned stores ,banks and junk cars in back yards please , I hope trump doesn’t screw up my paycheck
These are all great points and very reasonable, but why is there no mention of all the disinformation, or the public's basic misunderstanding of who pays for tariffs? Also the use of the phrase "lack of imagination" is doing some very heavy lifting here.

Why are none of you addressing the millions of missing votes ? His sudden popularity does not make sense
Harris got 14 million fewer votes than Biden 2020.
Even trump got fewer votes than 2020
Because there are no missing millions of votes.

How can anyone think trump is masculine?
B/c he does what he wants, says what he wants, does commits multiple crimes and gets away with it. So to (young) men of all races and ethnic backgrounds when they are told by the popular culture that any and displays of masculinity is always described as "toxic". Trump is their middle finger to the elites esp. they know that will never ever be as well off as their parents and grandparents.
He is a bully. Young men apparently think that is masculine.
Yep; women thinking they can determine what masculinity is 😂. Just like how idiotic it will be for men to determine what femininity is. … No self awareness ..
@@susanwozniak6354 simple...masculine means not effeminate.
Must be a mediocre man.
Agreed.
Delusional. Harris cannot articulate a basic understanding of how the economy works. She's unqualified.
Let US work for a healthier, deeper and stronger Democracy
I think the left was trying that re the election. Now what?
We are truly a country of deplorables. He won based on fear and hate and lies.

They are called the persuadables.

Dt was in serious
cognitive decline as it got closer to the finish line.
Hold the phone! Not enough ballots in 3 Boston precincts. People did notnget to vote in person. Wow!
