    In Steven Spielberg's massive blockbuster, paleontologists Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and mathematician Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) are among a select group chosen to tour an island theme park populated by dinosaurs created from prehistoric DNA. While the park's mastermind, billionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough), assures everyone that the facility is safe, they find out otherwise when various ferocious predators break free and go on the hunt.

      I think there are only a couple scenes where it's obvious CGI but for 1993 it's pretty damn good. The one scene I feel where the effects could use an enhancement is when you first see the dinosaurs once they arrive at the island. To me I think because it's only the actors that have a defined depth and nothing else in scene being physically present it so it looks very flat with almost no depth.
      But that might be due to a blue sky background being oversaturated with light so it's one uniform color when the sky isn't that uniform in color constantly.

    Unlike Jaws, Spielberg had the whole first scene introducing the T-Rex play without any score at all, which makes it all the more terrifying. Just the sounds of rain, screaming, stomping, growling, and the roar. I'm a huge John Williams fan and I have to say that any music would've ruined this entire scene. Proof that sometimes less is more.

      @leginious 3 ปีที่แล้ว +151

      not really true. in this movie the raptors and t-rex are hunting the humans for no real reason other than to kill them, even when we do see that they are fed and are hunting other animals they would probably focus on more bigger animals or dinosaurs to eat instead of chasing this small group of people across the island. When the raptor opens the door it searches the kitchen for two small kids when they could hunt the herbivores on the island, and when nedry is killed by the dilophosaurus it kills and eats him when it could escape and eat bigger animals. And maybe the dinosaurs were fed not long before everyone had to evacuate the island. I do love this movie but i don't think it really shows how these dinosaurs would act if they were set free.

    The roar actually makes sense for this T-rex in particular. Since its vision is based on movement, the roar would startle still prey into moving, which would let the Rex zero in on them. Real T-rex neither roared nor had movement-based vision, but for the InGen T-rex, both of these abilities would work off of each other. It shows how even though it's not a dinosaur, it's still an animal with a functioning biology.

      @@jackthomas6952 No, the real T-rex never roared. Roaring requires a larynx, or more specifically vocal cords. Only mammals have vocal cords, so roaring is a distinctly mammalian ability. Birds, which are dinosaurs, have a syrinx but no vocal cords, so it's likely that ancient dinosaurs likewise possessed a syrinx but no vocal cords. T-rex could still probably have grunted, growled, hissed, bellowed and even chirped. But it didn't roar. That's just Hollywood embellishment.

    _Did you know that?_
    3:37 In this scene of the Movie, the jeep's window was not expected to give way.
    The T-rex simply had to bite the roof of the jeep.
    But due to improper handling, he destroyed the glass which fell on the actors who was not aware of the matter.
    This was clearly not in their scripts.
    What you see on their faces is real fear.
    Obviously they knew the T-rex was a fake, but they were terrified that the animatronics of the T-Rex would fall on them.
    Because yes everyone on the set feared that he would fall on someone, he weighed in the 400 kilos.
    Steven Spielberg found the moment so unexpected that he continued to film.

    This still looks OUTRAGEOUSLY great and real almost 30 years later.. Why? It's the interchange between the real life prop dinosaur they built and the cgi dinosaur. 4:32... Look how amazingly tangible and grounded that looks.. That's because that is a real animatronic dinosaur. Then it switches to a cgi Dino at 4:39 when the dinosaur needs to do movements the animatronic dinosaur can't. By interchanging the real life prop Dino and the cgi Dino our mind is tricked into assigning the tangibility and realism of the prop Dino to the cgi Dino once the switch is made. It's genius. The rain and nightfall have a big role in masking the limitations of 1992 cgi. It really is remarkable, shot in 1992 and it holds up and is even arguably better than stuff we get today.

And I still find new things to see and ponder. It's a great piece of filmmaking and it still holds up with time even with all of it's inconsistencies and continuity issues. And while I enjoyed Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom a great deal they aren't on the same level as this especially Fallen Kingdom (Jurassic World comes a lot closer and is probably at least as good as The Lost World was).
