my grandmothers village is in Mangalore and its the same as konkan in its culture in a lot of ways as it has the same environment and the same kind of coconut, Areca nut, jackfruit, mango and cashew plants all around. the cashew nut shells are used in our homes to preserve pickles. our home style pickles dont use oil at all. we boil water very well and add salt to it. we use this salt water to brine the raw mangoes and add freshly pounded chili powder, methi seeds and mustard dal to this. lastly to preserve the pickle my grandmother used to roast about 4-5 cashew nut seeds on coal and break the shells. she used only the outer shell which oozes the oil to put in the pickle. This pickle would last for over a year. This oil coming from cashew shell is even applied on skin after diluting it with some coconut oil. supposedly very healthy for the skin.
