Replace swollen batteries. Don't puncture them. A punctured battery housing invites moisture into the battery. When lithium is exposed to moisture, it releases extremely flammable hydrogen gas. The "fix" in this video is asking for a fire!
    To avoid swollen batteries:
    1) Don't leave your device plugged in all the time - let it discharge sometimes. This is a common issue with laptops that are left plugged in all the time. Let it discharge sometimes. You're actually making it last longer by discharging it from time to time.
    2) Don't leave your device in hot or moist areas.

The battery this guy is using is not rated for 5V yes you can charge it for seconds at 5V but they aren't rated for it. If someone tries this and leaves the battery charging for a long while it is very possible for it to go bang. To sum don't follow this instructions, they are dangerous, just seeing it puncture the battery with a metal needle omg it is crazy dangerous, it is super easy to short the battery internaly and yes if the battery still has some juice it is going to go bang for sure or at least heat up and release some nasty smoke. I just whant to let people know that you should not follow this instructions!!! If you whant to do it i don't care but don't be stupid!

Don't do this battery puffs up due to separator degradation and when it degrades it releases oxygen that reacts with lithium and electrolyte forming hydrogen gas that puffs the battery.
when you open it by making a hole you release that hydrogen but also allowing more oxygen into the battery and even worse allowing moisture to get in making the battery lose even more capacity and puffing it again

When I was 9 years old I got a 2ch rc helicopter (Silverlit picooZ DX1) that after some time from having a bad battery protection circuit it puffed the battery so I did this( not knowing much about lithium batteries) after that the battery worked fine for 3 discharge cycles and then it puffed up again and lost all of its capacity killing the helicopter
Now when I come back to that moment I miss that helicopter it taught me so much and I miss him it was the first thing that I ever flew. At the time it was the world smallest helicopter

DISCLAIMER: ALL LI-PO battery manufacturers state that a swollen LI-PO battery must not be fixed. It was their intentions to CAUTION users..again users from reversed engineering those batteries for the purpose of them losing PROFITS.
Li-po batteries swollen due to the creation of OXYGEN on the electrolyte inside And the OXYGEN do not ADHERE to the anode nor cathode.Electrolyte of the LI-po was part liquid and during CHARGE and DISCHARGE cycle, part of that is becoming gas in the form of Oxygen.
Been doing this on my BLOATED LI-PO batteries and still be useful on small projects I am doing up until they run dry. and cannot hold current as they should..(When the battery is charge by a dedicated Li-po charger and after fully charge then days goes by the terminal voltage is dropping, END OF Li-PO CYCLE----Disposal time electrolyte gone dry)

Correct me if I am wrong, the reason for the expansion is due to excess hydrogen. You pierce the seal to allow the H1 to escape, and then put on a small adhesive to block the hole. we all know that these batteries can create quite alot of pressure, enough to crack screens, bend plastic etc, so my guess is with your seal on, the H1 can still leak. now we put our batteries back into an electrical environment where they will change in tempature due to discharging and recharging. very near a circuit board where the electricity is flowing. H1 can conduct electricity. Are you sure this is safe?

Standard Li-Po battery takes charge maximum at 4.2v and this indian guy charge it straight into USB port that outputting 5v.....why you dont use any charging circuit or power supply setted to 3.7v ? If you repeat this action, you might blow up that battery
I know that battery has charge protection board but voltage up to 5v still can blow that battery

Thank you this is great! I often wondered if it was possible to save some of my very small micro lipo cells like this. I think for small scale prototype stuff this is possibly a great fix. I wonder what the internal resistance is though after the repair. Of course anyone that does this should use safety glasses, a proper charger, and people have to be prepared if the cell blows up again. Personally, I would only try it with cells under 100mAh or so.

My Teachers always told me "Half knowledge is Dangerous". What you just did here was to teach someone how to make a time bomb. Li-Ion battery swells bcoz of the dendrites that form in the normal course of charge/discharge cycles. That is a non reversible process. The partial short circuits cause the swelling. By removing the bulge, and pressing on the battery, you have just encouraged more tear into the separator, thus making it more dangerous.
The rest of you need not attempt this. If the battery explodes on your face, you would look Ugly and people will know you are Stupid as well.

Sooooo many risky things with this technique. 3.7V Li-ion batt charge off 5V usb!?! ok well i get that the usb is prob current limited(hope its a 500mA crap charger), so just make sure ya take it off the charger before the voltage rises over 4.2V or you'll damage it even further. but if your bat is at this point ya prob dont care about that. I wouldnt say this is life threatning like some ppl claim, but there may be some fire hazard. And if this really works theres no way that battery is holding anywhere near the charge as when it was new. Hmm.... now im curious about the specs of doing this. might have to try it myself and do some measurements. Then try to get some to light on fire for fun. Fire always makes for good vids on youtube.

This guy is nuts. Firstly poking a hole into a Li ion battery is hazardous. It should have expload or catched fire if he had inserted the needle a little dip due to short circuit. And lithium exposed to oxygen catches fire. Secondly charging a Li ion battery with directly 5V without any protection feature is not a good idea and may be the reason why your battery is puffed up.

770,000 views for an extremely dangerous 'repair', which repairs absolutely nothing, and has all but certainly caused a fire(s) when people followed this ridiculous advice.
This is about equivalent to having blood all through your bandages, so removing the bandages to prevent stains on the bandages, and bleeding to death as a result.
Or similarly having a flat tire, so taking the wheel off completely, and driving with three wheels.
The pouches are there to contain the *highly flammable* gasses, all this 'repair' does is make a fire far more likely, and encourage people to use dangerous failing batteries instead of properly disposing of them, or having them replaced by a professional.
Whoever posted this video apparently has no concern for the safety of others.
I would recommend everyone to use the 'report' option/button, and select the 'harmful or dangerous acts' option.
